On October 16, 2024, Amazon announced four refreshed Kindle devices. The headline product was the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, Amazon’s first dedicated Kindle e-reader with a color display. It launched in the United States at $279.99 and began shipping October 30, 2024. The same announcement introduced updated Paperwhite, Scribe and entry-level Kindle models.
Colorsoft uses reflective E Ink rather than a tablet screen: black-and-white content is 300 ppi, while color is 150 ppi. Its muted color is most useful for comics, graphic novels, illustrations, maps, photographs and color highlights—not for turning ordinary monochrome pages into color.
The four Kindles Amazon announced

What “color” means on a Kindle
Colorsoft is a reflective E Ink reader with a color layer, not an LCD or OLED tablet. Its palette is deliberately paper-like and less saturated than a phone or tablet. Black-and-white text remains the core reading experience, while color appears only when the Kindle edition contains color artwork or images.

#1 Best Overall
- Read in color – The 7" Colorsoft display is high-contrast and easy on the eyes, with paper-like color that brings covers and content to life.
- A brand-new experience – The Kindle Colorsoft display is optimized for reading in color and is different from the Kindle Paperwhite display, which is optimized for black and white reading.
- Color your pages – Highlight your favorite scenes in yellow, orange, blue, and pink.
- Marathon reading – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 8 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Amazon lists 300 ppi for monochrome content and 150 ppi for color. That difference can make fine colored lines and small labels look softer than ordinary Kindle text. Depending on room lighting and front-light settings, the screen can also look darker than a monochrome Paperwhite.
A black-and-white comic will remain black and white. Likewise, a novel with no illustrations cannot be automatically colorized. Kobo describes the same limitation for color E Ink readers in its color-screen explanation.
What Colorsoft is good for
- Comics, graphic novels and children’s books with color artwork.
- Illustrated nonfiction, cookbooks, travel guides, maps and photographs.
- Color book covers when browsing the library.
- Yellow, orange, blue and pink highlights, with the ability to filter highlights by color.
- Readers who want those benefits while keeping E Ink’s long battery life, outdoor readability and distraction-free interface.
For video, apps, web browsing, highly saturated images or interactive PDFs, a tablet remains the more capable device. Color E Ink is a reading-focused compromise, not a general-purpose color screen.

How the Colorsoft lineup changed after launch
The original 32GB Signature Edition is no longer the only consumer Colorsoft. In July 2025, Amazon announced two additional models:

| Kindle Colorsoft | 16GB | $249.99 | Standard adjustable warm light; Amazon’s announcement included three months of Kindle Unlimited |
| Kindle Colorsoft Kids | 16GB | $269.99 | One year of Amazon Kids+, child-friendly cover, parental controls and a two-year worry-free guarantee |
The expansion announcement is documented by Amazon. Bundles, availability and prices can change. Amazon also announced a separate, much larger Kindle Scribe Colorsoft in 2025; it is a writing-focused product, not part of the October 2024 four-device refresh.
Colorsoft versus Paperwhite
Choose Colorsoft if color is central to your reading
Colorsoft makes sense for regular comics, graphic novels, illustrated reference books, color children’s books or color-coded study notes. The 32GB Signature Edition is especially relevant to readers storing large fixed-layout books. Waterproofing, long battery life and the Kindle Store ecosystem remain intact.

Choose Paperwhite if text is nearly everything
The 2024 Paperwhite is the more rational purchase for conventional novels and text-heavy nonfiction. It provides a sharp monochrome 300 ppi display, fast page turns, strong contrast, waterproofing and long battery life without charging a premium for color that may rarely appear.
Colorsoft does not replace Paperwhite; it serves a different reading pattern. The deciding question is how often your books contain meaningful color, not whether color sounds technically impressive.

Early units attracted reports of a yellow band or uneven coloration near the bottom of the screen. Amazon said it made software and display adjustments. Updated reporting by Engadget noted that some owners continued to report uneven coloration. That history does not establish that every current unit is defective, but it makes the return period important.

The Kobo Libra Colour product page also listed the smaller Kobo Clara Colour at $179.99 when observed. Prices are time-sensitive. Kobo is attractive to EPUB-first and sideloading-focused readers; Kindle is the stronger fit for Amazon purchases, Kindle Unlimited, Audible integration and Amazon household features. Neither platform can add color to monochrome source content.
Who should buy which Kindle?
- Colorsoft Signature Edition: Amazon users who want color and 32GB storage, plus wireless charging and automatic front-light adjustment.
- 16GB Colorsoft: The lower-cost adult route into Amazon’s color platform, provided 16GB is enough for your illustrated library.
- Colorsoft Kids: Families wanting parental controls, Amazon Kids+ and the bundled cover—not adults seeking the cheapest general Kindle.
- Paperwhite: Most fiction and nonfiction readers prioritizing clean monochrome text, speed, waterproofing and value.
- Kindle Scribe: Readers who need a large writing, notebook and document-markup workspace rather than simply a color screen.
- Entry Kindle: Readers wanting the smallest, simplest and least expensive 2024 Kindle, including the Matcha finish.

The Bottom Line
Amazon’s October 2024 refresh made Colorsoft the first color Kindle e-reader, but color is a specialized upgrade rather than a universal Paperwhite replacement. Buy it for comics, graphic novels, illustrations and color highlights; choose Paperwhite for primarily text-based reading, and compare Kobo if open formats or page-turn buttons matter more than Amazon’s ecosystem.
