Google’s Pride record in 2025 was mixed. Pride Month stopped appearing in Google Calendar’s default observances after a calendar-policy change Google says began in mid-2024. That reduced one form of everyday visibility, but it does not show that Google ended all LGBTQ+ support. Google documented Pride programs in 2024 and again in 2026; the available sources do not establish the scope of a dedicated 2025 campaign or its measurable effects.
What changed in Google Calendar
Google stopped automatically including Pride Month and several other cultural observances in Calendar. Users noticed the omissions in February 2025, but Google said the underlying change had been made in mid-2024. The missing dates also included Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Indigenous Peoples’ Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Associated Press reported Google’s explanation: maintaining hundreds of manually entered cultural moments around the world was not “scalable or sustainable,” so Calendar would focus on public holidays and national observances, using Timeanddate.com as a source.
This was a removal from the default calendar layer, not a ban on Pride. Google said users could add important dates manually. That distinction matters: users who want Pride on their calendars can still put it there, but the service no longer supplies that recognition automatically. The Guardian’s February 11, 2025 report also noted Google’s statement that the change would not affect future Doodles and that the company continued to promote cultural moments in other products.

The timing also needs care. The omission became a public controversy in February 2025, but Google said the policy shift happened in mid-2024. That makes it inaccurate to describe it as a change made in response to events after the start of 2025. It does not, by itself, establish why Google chose the policy or settle the debate about its effect.

Calendar visibility is different from a Pride campaign
A calendar observance and a themed product feature are not interchangeable. A default entry can be encountered passively by anyone viewing the calendar; a content collection, background or business listing generally requires someone to encounter a particular product or seek it out. Removing Pride from Calendar therefore reduced one kind of ambient visibility, even if Pride-related material remained elsewhere.
That does not mean a calendar entry alone funds community groups, improves LGBTQ+ safety, or changes how people are treated. Visibility is one possible form of impact, not proof of broader outcomes. Google’s global-calendar argument also identifies a real design problem: a single international calendar cannot effortlessly represent every meaningful observance. But choosing public holidays and national observances as the default can leave out cultural and historical events that are not legal holidays. Optional subscriptions or user-selectable observance calendars could address some of that tension, though these are alternatives, not commitments Google has announced in the cited sources.
What Google’s documented Pride activity does show
Google’s 2024 Pride announcement described activity across products and community partnerships. The company said it funded and worked with Pride Live on LGBTQ+ historical preservation, supported the Stonewall National Monument & Visitor Center, curated LGBTQ+-related content on Google TV and Google Play, spotlighted YouTube creators, offered Pride-related Google Meet effects and Chrome backgrounds, and highlighted LGBTQ+-friendly, transgender-safe-space and LGBTQ+-owned businesses in Maps and Search.

In a June 2026 announcement, Google described a Pride-related Doodle, curated content on Google Play, YouTube creator promotion, LGBTQ+-focused film and television recommendations, a Pride-inspired Meet background, and LGBTQ+-owned business discovery through Maps and Search. Those announcements show that Google’s Calendar decision did not amount to a permanent end to all Pride-related activity.
They do not, however, establish what Google did during June 2025. The sources available here do not verify a dedicated official 2025 Pride campaign page, a complete 2025 product inventory, the amount spent, how many people encountered the features, or whether programming expanded or contracted across individual products. The 2024 and 2026 examples should not be presented as proof of Google’s precise 2025 activity.
Why the decision drew criticism
Criticism focuses on the consequences of the policy, not only the company’s stated intent. A default Pride entry can make LGBTQ+ history and recognition part of ordinary public-facing product use. When that entry disappears, the burden of visibility shifts to users and to the organizations or publishers that continue to promote Pride. For LGBTQ+ users, that can look inconsistent when a company still presents Pride-themed features elsewhere.

The broader context heightened the optics. In 2025, some companies withdrew from Pride sponsorships, and Pride organizations reported funding shortfalls. AP’s reporting described sponsor withdrawals and budget gaps involving San Francisco Pride, KC Pride and Heritage of Pride in New York. This helps explain why a change to a prominent product attracted attention, but it does not show that Google caused the wider retreat or that its Calendar decision was connected to those sponsors’ choices.

The evidence verifies the omission and Google’s explanation, not that the company removed Pride specifically because of political pressure.
What LGBTQ+ adults say about corporate Pride
A Pew Research Center survey offers context for assessing corporate messaging. Among 3,959 LGBTQ+ adults surveyed January 8–19, 2025, 68% said all or most companies that promote Pride are motivated by business interests. Sixteen percent said companies do so from a genuine desire to celebrate LGBTQ+ people, while 35% said companies do so because they feel pressured. The same survey found 66% had participated in LGBTQ+-related Pride events at least once.

These are respondents’ perceptions, not evidence of Google’s actual motives. They describe surveyed U.S. adults, not LGBTQ+ people everywhere, and they do not reveal whether respondents wanted Pride in Google Calendar. The figures support a conclusion that many LGBTQ+ adults approach corporate Pride with skepticism; they do not prove that every initiative is insincere or useless. Commercial motivation and material benefit can coexist: a company may seek brand value while also providing funding, visibility or access. The relevant question is what the activity delivers and whether it lasts.

Alphabet’s 2025 proxy statement included a shareholder proposal calling for the company to end its participation in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. The proposal’s supporting statement argued that LGBTQ+-related corporate policies were politically divisive and posed shareholder-value risks. Alphabet’s board recommended voting against the proposal. The SEC-filed proxy documents both positions. It does not establish that the proposal represented the company’s view, or that investor pressure caused the Calendar change.

A shareholder proposal can illustrate pressure on corporate policy without proving a causal link to a particular product decision.
How to judge whether future support has impact
Rather than treating a Pride logo or themed background as proof of meaningful support—or dismissing every corporate effort as branding—readers can look for evidence across several dimensions:
- Resources: Does the initiative commit money, staff time, grants or infrastructure, and are amounts disclosed?
- Duration: Does support continue after June, or is it limited to a seasonal campaign?
- Community control: Are LGBTQ+ organizations, creators and affected communities involved in decisions?
- Reach: How many users encounter the initiative, and in which markets? Google’s cited announcements do not provide these figures.
- Safety: Are harassment, hate speech and creator safety addressed alongside representation?
- Consistency: Do workplace, advertising, moderation and platform policies align with public messaging?
- Transparency and outcomes: Does the company publish what it funded and what changed, rather than only listing features?
- Material benefit: Does the effort provide funding, access, preservation, safety or meaningful visibility—not only themed graphics?
On the available record, Google’s 2025 position is best described as mixed. Calendar stopped giving Pride default recognition, while the company’s documented activity in adjacent years shows that Pride-related product and community support continued at other times. Without a verified account of Google’s 2025 program or outcome data, neither a claim of total retreat nor a claim of demonstrated social impact is justified.
