Google’s pinball Easter egg was real: a small brick-breaker-style game hidden in the Google app for iPhone and iPad. The original route was through the app’s empty Tabs screen, but later user reports suggest the feature may have disappeared. The steps below explain how it worked and what to try if you want to check your version.
What Google’s pinball Easter egg was
It was an embedded mini-game in Google’s native iOS app, not a separate App Store game or a game launched by searching in Safari or Chrome. Contemporary coverage described colorful, Google-style shapes, flippers, bumpers, levels and scorekeeping. The play was closer to a brick-breaker with pinball touches than a full simulation of a physical pinball table.
The game was widely reported on July 1, 2021, after users began sharing it online in June. Its exact release date and creator were not established in contemporary coverage. 9to5Google’s report covers the discovery and historical gameplay.
How to try the original activation method
This is the historical procedure, not a guarantee that the Easter egg remains in the current app. Reports differed on whether the shapes appeared on their own or needed a swipe, possibly because the trigger varied by version.

- Open Google’s native app on an iPhone or iPad. This was not a feature of the Google website in a browser.
- Tap Tabs in the bottom navigation.
- Close all open tabs, using the trash-can control if it is shown, until the Tabs screen is empty.
- Wait briefly on the empty screen. If nothing happens, try several upward swipes. Some historical guides also described opening a tab and dismissing it before waiting.
- If colorful shapes rise from the bottom, swipe upward on them to launch the game.
The reports do not describe one perfectly consistent trigger. Tom’s Guide’s instructions and Gadgets 360’s guide give examples of the historical variations.
Controls, lives and power-ups
Once the game was active, tapping the left or right side of the screen operated the corresponding flipper. Contemporary coverage said a center tap could trigger both flippers, making one-handed play possible. Use taps rather than swipes during play; a swipe could disrupt or exit the game.

- Easy to play but a fun challenge to perfect
- Screen-free fun on the go - great for travel
- Fun retro space design
- 10" tall
- No batteries required. Age: 3+
- Historical guides described three starting lives or balls.
- Shapes took repeated hits to break, and later levels became harder.
- Hearts awarded an extra life. Yellow stars enlarged the ball or made it more effective at breaking shapes; blue stars split it into multiple balls.
- Bumpers and other elements appeared as play progressed. After losing all lives, players could restart.
Some contemporary reports said the game could continue offline after it had been accessed. That describes the historical feature, not proof that it is present in today’s app. iDownloadBlog’s walkthrough describes its iPhone and iPad gameplay.
Why the game may not appear now
Google did not provide a publicly documented restoration method in the sources available here. In an August 2024 Google Search Community thread, users said they could no longer find the game; a March 2025 thread asked Google to bring it back. These reports support treating the Easter egg as possibly removed, not as a feature that every current iPhone user can still launch.

If the historical steps fail, first make sure you are in the native Google app rather than a browser or another app. You can then close every tab, wait on the empty Tabs screen, leave and reopen Tabs, try a few upward swipes, and force-close and reopen the app. If it still does not appear, it is reasonable to assume it is unavailable in that build rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. Updating is not a reliable fix: the feature may have disappeared after an app update or interface change.
The later reports are user discussions rather than an official Google announcement that the game was discontinued. The August 2024 thread is here; the March 2025 request is here.

Which devices had it—and what about Android?
Historical reports found the game in Google’s iPhone app and also described it working on iPad. Contemporary testing did not find it in the Android version. That is evidence about the feature as reported in 2021, not a promise of current iOS availability or proof about every region and app build. The exact minimum app and operating-system versions were not established.
Was there a standalone Google pinball app?
No standalone Google pinball title was described in the historical reporting. The Easter egg lived inside the Google iOS app; App Store games with “pinball” in their names are separate products, not downloads of Google’s hidden game.
Pinball games to try instead
If the Easter egg is unavailable and you want a playable game, these are separate App Store options. Their listings and terms can change, and availability, price and age rating may vary by country.
