Martin shared in August 2026 was about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, not a new milestone for The Winds of Winter. The show received nine Emmy nominations, including Best Drama, but Martin’s post gave no new page count or release date for the long-awaited novel.
What was the positive news?
Martin’s August 2026 Not a Blog post celebrated A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms earning nine Emmy nominations. GamesRadar reported that the post was his first since February 2026; Martin said he had fallen behind on posts and expected upcoming entries to be short and rushed. The update is encouraging franchise news, but it is not a report of progress on The Winds of Winter. GamesRadar’s report on the post covers both the nominations and its lack of a book announcement.
Is there a Winds of Winter release date?
No confirmed release date has been reported. In April 2026, Bantam Books told GamesRadar that an online claim saying the manuscript was complete and the book was planned for a fall release was false. That rumor should not be treated as a publication schedule. GamesRadar’s report on the rumor summarizes the publisher’s response.
What has Martin said about finishing the book?
Martin has said he wants to finish The Winds of Winter, and that abandoning it would feel like “a total failure” to him. He has also described making progress before being diverted by other work. These remarks establish his stated intention and some of the difficulty around the project; they do not provide a deadline or guarantee. GamesRadar’s account reports his comments.

How much of the book was written in earlier updates?
The clearest reported page figures in the available timeline date to 2022 and 2023, not 2026. They are Martin’s historical estimates, reported by The Week, rather than a current verified manuscript count.
| Date | Reported statement | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| October 2022 | About three-quarters complete; approximately 1,100–1,200 manuscript pages written, with 400–500 more to write. | These are manuscript pages, not pages in a published edition. |
| November 2023 | About 1,100 pages done. | The report suggested little material change from the earlier count at that point. |
| September 2024 | Martin said he had added pages in 2024, while describing the writing as difficult and television work as occupying much of those months. | No updated total or completion estimate was given in this account. |
The dated statements are collated in The Week’s timeline. They should not be added together or presented as measurements of the manuscript’s status today.
