At the same time, Brother Dusk becomes Brother Darkness and destroys the clone dynasty from within. The finale’s last image then points beyond the Empire: the Brazen Head reaches a robot hidden on the Moon near Earth.
“The Darkness,” the season 3 finale, was released September 12, 2025. Apple TV Press summarizes the episode this way: “Gaal and the Second Foundation take the fight to the Mule as Empire’s legacy suffers a catastrophic blow.” Both halves of that description land: Gaal’s apparent victory is overturned, while the imperial succession is plunged into crisis.

Gaal defeats the apparent Mule—but Bayta is the real one
The confrontation unfolds at a space station orbiting New Terminus, not in the way Gaal’s vision seemed to foretell. She enters the apparent Mule’s mind, overpowers him, and cuts his throat. Then she senses the Mule’s presence again. Bayta Mallow reveals herself as the actual Mule, explaining the apparent antagonist: she had used her powers to make him believe he was the Mule. Series creator and executive producer David S. Goyer confirmed Bayta’s identity in an interview with TheWrap.
So, does the Mule win? Gaal stops the man she believes is her enemy, but Bayta’s reveal means the Mule survives and the conflict is not resolved. The twist changes the identity of the threat rather than ending it.

How the television reveal differs from Asimov’s books
The series changes the route taken by the novels. In Asimov’s books, Magnifico is eventually revealed as the Mule, and Bayta is the first to work out his identity. That is a comparison with the source material, not a clue that the television series has established Magnifico’s identity. The screen finale names Bayta as the real Mule.
Brother Darkness brings the clone dynasty to the brink
Brother Dusk turns on the dynasty he served and takes the name Brother Darkness. He destroys the cloning facility, although a baby clone survives. In the ensuing upheaval, he kills Brother Day and the Empire clones, and Demerzel appears to die while trying to protect the infant from the Ascension Chamber beam. Her head and other metal remains are left on screen. The episode does not establish whether she can return.
Rank #2
Day’s death has a specific consequence: he had previously removed his Imperial nanotechnology. When Darkness shoots him, the nanites that might otherwise have protected or aided him are absent, and Day bleeds out. Darkness is left alone on the throne as the clone Empire falls, but the surviving infant makes the question of succession more complicated than a simple end to the line.
The Brazen Head’s final signal points to the Moon
In the closing moments, the Brazen Head connects to a robot on the Moon near Earth. The image establishes the connection; what the robot or others like it will do next remains unknown.

Goyer told TheWrap that Earth’s location had been redacted and that robots had been hidden on the Moon since the Robot Wars, watching and waiting to reveal themselves. He said, “I always intended to bring things back there.” That describes his stated intention for the story, not a resolution supplied by the finale.

The episode breaks two established power structures at once: Bayta’s concealed control overturns the apparent Mule story, while Darkness’s revolt dismantles the clone Empire from within. The Moon signal widens the horizon again, suggesting that another hidden presence has been watching events. These turns set up possibilities rather than answering every endgame question.
Rank #4
- Established: Bayta is the real Mule; Darkness kills Day and the Empire clones; Demerzel appears to die; and the Brazen Head connects to a robot on the Moon.
- Unresolved: what Bayta does next, whether Demerzel can return, what role the surviving Cleon infant will play, and when or why the hidden robots might reveal themselves.
Goyer also told TheWrap that plans for a fourth season had been outlined with incoming showrunners Ian Goldberg and David Kob. He discussed possible stopping points after seasons 4, 6, or 8 as part of his design. Those were plans as described at the time of the interview, not confirmation of release dates or a final season count.
