Should You Shake a Polaroid Picture? What to Do Instead

No—don’t shake a developing Polaroid picture. Keep it flat, protect it from bright light, and follow the development time printed on that film’s packaging. Shaking can disturb the wet chemistry and cause blobs or other distortions near the picture’s edge.

Why you should not shake a Polaroid photo

The familiar instruction to shake an instant photo is a myth, not part of Polaroid’s recommended process. While the picture develops, its internal developer chemistry is still wet. Polaroid warns that shaking can disrupt it and produce image artifacts. Its support guidance advises against shaking a developing picture: Polaroid’s explanation of picture distortion.

What to do after a Polaroid picture comes out

  1. Leave it under the film shield initially. The film remains light-sensitive after ejection. Polaroid says to keep it under the camera’s film shield for the initial period specified for the model.
  2. Continue shielding it as it develops. Once the picture is out from under the shield, protect it from bright light while the image develops. Polaroid’s film development guidance points users to the instructions for their particular film.
  3. Set it flat and handle it by the frame. Don’t shake, bend, crease, or squeeze the picture while the chemistry is developing.
  4. Wait for the time on the film packaging. Development time varies by film, so there is no single reliable time to apply to every Polaroid pack.

Check film compatibility before buying

Film type is not universal across Polaroid cameras. For example, Polaroid’s Now camera guidance names i-Type and 600 film as compatible with that model. Check the guidance for your own camera before choosing a pack; compatibility for one camera does not establish compatibility for another.

Why the shaking myth stuck

Shaking became part of the familiar image of instant photography, but it is not how current Polaroid film should be handled. Hackaday’s 2022 account places the start of Polaroid instant-film camera production in 1948 and describes the SX-70, introduced in 1972, as the first truly instant SLR. The article says an SX-70 picture could be available about a minute later; that is historical context from Hackaday, not a current development-time instruction. For a present-day pack, use its own printed guidance.
