Susan Wojcicki, the former YouTube chief executive and one of Google’s earliest employees, died in August 2024 at age 56 after living with lung cancer for two years. Her husband, Dennis Troper, announced her death, and YouTube later published a memorial that reproduced Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s tribute.
Wojcicki’s career connected two defining parts of Google’s history: the advertising and product businesses that helped build the company, and YouTube, which grew into one of the world’s most influential platforms for video, entertainment, information and public debate.
From Google’s first office to an early leadership role
Before she became a public technology executive, Wojcicki was part of Google’s origin story. In 1998, she rented her Menlo Park garage to Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who used it as an early office. The garage connection made her an important figure in the company’s early history, although she was not one of Google’s two founders.
#1 Best Overall
Wojcicki joined Google in 1999 and became employee number 16, according to Google’s company history. Her work soon extended well beyond marketing. In her own account of her career, she described responsibilities involving Google Image Search, Google Video, early AdSense work, the acquisition of YouTube and the acquisition of DoubleClick.
Those assignments placed her close to the company’s developing relationship with online advertising, search, digital media and video. They also gave her a role in several businesses that later became central to Google’s broader expansion.
Her role in Google’s acquisition of YouTube
Wojcicki was involved in Google’s 2006 acquisition of YouTube. The deal brought the rapidly growing video site into Google and eventually made YouTube one of the company’s most prominent consumer platforms.
Her documented responsibilities support a careful description of her influence: she helped connect Google’s advertising and product strategy with the company’s growing interest in online video. That was a major leadership role, but it would be inaccurate to credit her alone with creating either Google’s advertising business or YouTube’s success.

Nine years as YouTube CEO
Wojcicki became YouTube CEO in 2014 and held the position for approximately nine years. During her tenure, YouTube expanded its reach as a global platform used by more than two billion people, according to an institutional profile from UCLA Anderson.
The platform’s influence extended across creator culture, music, entertainment, news, education and politics. Associated Press reporting described the period as one in which YouTube reshaped entertainment, culture and public debate. Wojcicki’s job involved leading a platform whose scale made its business decisions and policies consequential for creators, viewers, advertisers, governments and media companies around the world.
Her tenure was also debated. Creators, advertisers, governments and critics questioned aspects of YouTube’s policies and moderation decisions. Those debates formed part of the environment in which she led the company, but individual allegations about censorship, demonetization or specific policy choices require separate sourcing and should not be treated as established facts without it.

Why she left YouTube’s top job
On February 16, 2023, Wojcicki announced that she was stepping back from the CEO role. She said she wanted to begin a new chapter focused on family, health and personal projects, while moving into an advisory role across Google and Alphabet.

Her stated plans included continuing to advise the company and its parent, while devoting more time to priorities outside the chief executive role. The announcement did not establish that she left for a single medical reason.
Death at age 56
Wojcicki died in August 2024 at age 56 after living with lung cancer for two years. The official YouTube memorial described the illness, while contemporaneous reporting identified Troper as the family member who announced her death.
The news prompted tributes from colleagues and people across Google and YouTube. Pichai’s memorial message, reproduced by YouTube, reflected the importance of Wojcicki’s long association with Google—from the company’s early garage office to its development into a global technology business.
A legacy spanning advertising and video
Wojcicki’s most defensible legacy lay in the connection between Google’s advertising engine and YouTube’s growth as a global platform. Her career included early work in marketing and product development, involvement in the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions, leadership of Google’s advertising business, and nearly a decade directing YouTube.
That combination distinguished her career from a conventional corporate succession story. She was present at an early stage of Google’s development, helped shape businesses tied to advertising and digital media, and later led a platform that affected how billions of people watched and shared video.
Best Value
For a documentary or biographical account of Silicon Valley, her life also illustrated how Google’s history moved from a small rented garage to a worldwide media and technology ecosystem. Wojcicki was neither one of Google’s founders nor the sole architect of YouTube, but she was a significant executive bridge between those two chapters.
