If OBS stops a 24/7 YouTube stream, first identify what actually failed: the connection to YouTube, OBS’s encoder, or YouTube’s handling of the stream. Before changing settings, note the exact OBS status and counters, the time it failed, and the message in YouTube Live Control Room. Those details determine which fix to try; there is no single setting that reliably fixes every interruption.
First identify what “stopping” means
OBS can remain open while its connection drops, struggle to render or encode, or send a feed that YouTube stops accepting. Check OBS and YouTube together rather than assuming the app has crashed.
| What you see | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames or a disconnect | Connection stability and whether the configured bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity. OBS says it is “extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” OBS stream connection troubleshooting |
| Picture or sound is unhealthy, or CPU load is high | Encoder load, sources, routing, and the encoder’s output. Compare what OBS is producing with YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube encoder troubleshooting |
| OBS will not start streaming and an encoder error appears | Check the current YouTube stream key and encoder setup. A key issue is more relevant to a startup or authentication error than a stream that ran for hours before failing. YouTube stream settings |
Record the evidence before changing settings
- Note whether OBS is still open and the exact status or error it displays.
- Record whether dropped-frame counters are increasing and whether OBS reports an encoder error.
- Write down the failure time and the exact stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Preserve the OBS log covering the failure. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, and stream-health messages when troubleshooting. YouTube encoder troubleshooting
If OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects
Dropped frames point first to the network path between your encoder and YouTube’s ingest server, or to a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Test capacity and stability, not just the speed advertised by your internet plan.
Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity
- Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to your normal stream. YouTube recommends measuring upload speed and leaving bandwidth headroom. YouTube live encoder settings
- Use OBS’s suggestion of 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate, not as a guaranteed formula. Other traffic and connection fluctuations can reduce the bandwidth actually available to OBS. OBS stream connection troubleshooting
- Compare your configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists these 1080p figures:
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular connection can hold that bitrate continuously. The correct range changes with codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s full encoder settings guidance for your configuration. If your stable upload cannot support the configured bitrate with headroom, lower the bitrate and test again.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Isolate local network problems
- If you stream over Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. OBS stream connection troubleshooting
- Temporarily test whether a VPN, firewall, antivirus, or network-optimization utility is interfering. Do not leave security protection disabled; if a security product is the cause, restore it and configure an OBS exception.
- Check network drivers, router or modem, cables, and other network equipment before replacing hardware. If local checks do not resolve the issue, ask your ISP about routing congestion or provider-side changes.
Windows network settings: treat these as tests, not cures
OBS documents Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as settings some users report helpful. Their effectiveness is not guaranteed. The same OBS guide documents leaving Bind to IP at Default; if you have forced IPv4-only and it makes no difference, return it to the default. Dynamic bitrate adjustment is marked Beta in the guide: it can lower quality to adapt to network conditions, but OBS says it does not solve the underlying connection problem. If the encoder output or picture is unhealthy
When the picture or sound is bad, CPU load is high, or OBS reports an encoding problem, investigate the encoder and sources rather than changing network settings at random. Check that OBS is current, inspect its output locally, review CPU load and dashboard errors, and examine source or audio routing. If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports poor connectivity, return to the network checks; if output itself is unhealthy, isolate the source or test another encoder. Check YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the matching settings rather than copying a number from a different output format. YouTube live encoder settings
If streaming fails at startup, check the stream key
A YouTube stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and acts like a password. If OBS cannot start and YouTube or the encoder reports a key or authentication error, retrieve the current key from YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder’s stream settings. This is a targeted check for startup or authentication errors; it does not explain by itself why a stream that connected successfully for hours later stopped. Protect recordings and plan for a 24/7 interruption
Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a continuous broadcast. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” For a 24/7 channel, enable local recording, confirm the file is growing during the stream, and verify the recording is usable. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive backup. YouTube archive live streams YouTube live encoder tips
If you have a planned backup encoder, test its failover rather than assuming it will take over: YouTube’s event tips describe stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player switches to the backup. That test supports a planned failover design; it does not establish automatic or seamless recovery from every OBS or network interruption. YouTube live encoder tips

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Next action |
|---|---|
| Dropped frames climb before the stream disconnects | Measure stable upload capacity, compare it with the stream bitrate, test Ethernet if available, and check for VPN or security-software interference. |
| OBS remains connected but output looks or sounds wrong | Inspect encoder output, CPU load, sources, and audio routing; compare OBS output with YouTube’s health dashboard. |
| OBS cannot start and reports an encoder or key error | Check the current stream key in Live Control Room and confirm the encoder’s stream settings. |
| OBS shows no clear error, but YouTube reports a problem | Save the exact dashboard message and timestamp, then compare them with the OBS status and log before changing settings. |
| The stream is interrupted and the archive is missing or incomplete | Check local recording. A YouTube stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. |
