First identify which OBS counter is rising: network-dropped frames point to the connection to the streaming service or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; rendering or encoding lag points to local performance. If OBS shows no dropped frames but viewers report buffering, investigate that separately. The right fix depends on the symptom, platform, operating system, OBS version, and stream stats—not simply on the fact that the stream runs around the clock.
Read the OBS symptom before changing settings
Open OBS’s Stats window while the problem is happening. Check the dropped-frames counter alongside the rendering-lag and encoding-lag indicators. A choppy picture alone does not identify the cause.
- Dropped frames (network): OBS describes these as a connection problem between the computer and the service’s remote ingest server, or a configured bitrate that the connection cannot sustain. A sufficiently severe problem can disconnect the stream. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
- Rendering or encoding lag: This is a local workload issue, not the same diagnosis as network-dropped frames. OBS needs GPU resources to render scenes, and complex scenes can increase that load. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting
- Viewer buffering with no OBS drops: Viewers may buffer because of their own location, device, or internet connection, or because the stream’s bitrate is a poor fit for them. That does not by itself mean OBS is dropping frames. OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting
For a continuous stream, note which counter changes and when. If you need help beyond the checks below, record the platform, operating system, OBS version, relevant Stats readings, and OBS log from a session where the issue occurred. Without those details, there is no reliable universal bitrate or setting to prescribe.
If OBS is dropping network frames
Work through the connection path before lowering quality or replacing equipment. OBS’s network troubleshooting guidance describes possible causes and diagnostic options; none is a guaranteed fix for every setup.

1. Use a wired connection if possible
If the streaming computer uses Wi-Fi, test it on a wired Ethernet connection to the router. OBS recommends wired networking for stream stability. If you already use Ethernet, check that the cable is seated properly and test a known-good cable or network port before buying replacement hardware.
2. Check software and network drivers
Temporarily test whether a VPN, security software, bundled network-management software, or outdated network drivers are interfering with the stream. Update drivers from the appropriate device or computer manufacturer when warranted. Change one thing at a time and observe whether the dropped-frame counter changes; disabling security protection broadly or permanently is not a safe general fix.

3. Review OBS network options as diagnostics
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and review the available network options for your version and operating system. OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows, the Bind to IP default, IP family selection, and dynamic bitrate adjustment. These options can help diagnose particular configurations, but should not be treated as universal remedies. Note the current values before changing them, make one change at a time, and revert it if it does not help.
Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce dropped frames during congestion by lowering the bitrate, but OBS warns that it does not fix the underlying connection issue and reduces video quality. Use it as a compromise when appropriate, not as proof that the connection problem is solved. OBS explains the limitation here.

4. Isolate equipment or escalate the connection issue
A modem, router, network cable, network card, or other network device can be faulty. Test a suspected component—such as a different cable or network port—to confirm whether it is involved before replacing it. If the issue persists beyond the equipment and settings you can control, contact your internet service provider and share when the interruption occurs and what you observed in OBS.
If rendering or encoding lag is rising
Reduce the work OBS must do only when the local performance indicators point to that bottleneck. OBS identifies GPU workload and scene complexity as relevant factors; simplifying a scene will not repair an unstable connection.

- Reduce competing GPU work: Close or limit other applications using the GPU while OBS is running.
- Simplify the actual scene: If your scene collection uses many sources, filters, or animated elements, disable items one at a time to find whether they contribute to the lag. Browser sources and expensive filters can add workload, but the title alone does not establish which sources your stream uses.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator: OBS suggests this in applicable GPU-overload situations. Check whether the rendering or encoding indicator improves rather than assuming the change addresses network drops.
- Lower output demands only if needed: Reducing resolution or frame rate changes the stream’s output. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working; that is a troubleshooting example, not a universal preset for animation. Choose changes based on the measured bottleneck and the quality your audience needs.

Treat viewer reports as a separate signal. Ask whether the problem affects one viewer or many, and whether viewers are on different connections or devices. A stream that reaches OBS without network drops can still buffer for some viewers.

Review the bitrate against the streaming platform’s current recommendations and the connection capacity of the audience you want to reach. Lowering bitrate may improve compatibility, but can require a tradeoff in resolution, image quality, or frame rate. Whether the platform offers transcoding is also relevant to how easily viewers with slower connections can watch; the platform is not specified here, so check its own current guidance rather than assuming a particular capability. Keep the 24/7 context in perspective
A round-the-clock stream makes recurring faults important to isolate: intermittent connection trouble, a scene that overloads the computer, and viewer-side buffering require different remedies. OBS’s guidance does not establish a dedicated 24/7 operating procedure, a guaranteed uptime figure, a recommended computer specification, or a universal bitrate for children’s animation. Use your platform’s requirements and the stream’s actual OBS stats rather than applying a preset based only on the content type.
