Choose OBS’s VLC Video source for a visual playlist you can manage in a graphical interface; choose FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when you want a scripted sequence and your files are compatible. Neither playlist is the YouTube stream by itself: you still need an eligible YouTube channel, a live stream, an encoder connection, and monitoring. For a channel that must keep playing while your computer is off, a cloud option such as StreamNeo is a different approach.

These are different ways to manage media, not different YouTube destinations. In either case, the encoder must send the feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
What YouTube needs before the playlist can go live
YouTube Help says live streaming requires a verified channel without live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. These account conditions and interface details can change, so check the current eligibility and controls in your channel account. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Choose the visibility that suits your test or broadcast: public, private, or unlisted.
- Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a secret; reset it if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and then select Go live.

Build a playlist in OBS
Use VLC Video for multiple files
- Install VLC on the computer that will run OBS. The VLC Video source relies on VLC libraries and will not appear in OBS without VLC installed.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will be sent to YouTube.
- Add the media files in the order you want them to play. Confirm the source shows the intended playlist.
- In the source properties, leave Loop Playlist on to repeat the list. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if order matters.
- Set the source’s visibility behavior to suit the scene. OBS provides options that can pause, stop, or continue playback according to visibility.
- Check the scene in the OBS preview and listen for audio before connecting it to YouTube.
OBS’s guide lists these source types for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its built-in Media Source is an alternative for a single file and has a Loop toggle; it is not the same as the VLC-backed playlist source. OBS Media Sources guide
If VLC Video is missing
- Likely cause: VLC is not installed on the computer running OBS.
- Fix: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS’s source list. If the source remains unavailable, check the current OBS and VLC installation guidance for your operating system.
Build a playlist with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer
Prepare the playlist script
The concat demuxer reads a text script and presents its files in sequence as though their packets had been muxed together. It is not a media converter: it does not automatically repair incompatible streams. FFmpeg requires the files to have matching streams, including codecs and time base. - Create a plain-text script in extended ASCII. To enable automatic format recognition, make
ffconcat version 1.0the exact first line, with no extra spaces or byte-order mark. - Add one
filedirective per input. For example:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'episode-01.mp4' file 'episode-02.mp4'Use valid paths for your files; spaces and special characters need appropriate quoting or escaping.
- Check that all files have the same stream structure, including codecs and time base. If they differ, do not assume the concat demuxer will make them compatible.
- Check the reported duration of each file. The demuxer uses durations to adjust later timestamps; inaccurate durations may lead to gaps or artifacts. A
durationdirective can override a stored duration when you have a reliable value. - Only use
inpointif you need to seek into an input and understand the codec limitation: with non-intra-frame codecs, packets or decoded frames from before the inpoint may still appear.
FFmpeg distinguishes the concat demuxer from both the concat filter and concat protocol. The concat filter is an option when re-encoding is needed; do not treat the demuxer as a universal substitute. FFmpeg FAQ: concatenating media files
Sending the sequence to YouTube
The playlist script defines the sequence, but it does not configure YouTube or settle the right encoding options for every set of files and FFmpeg build. The official documentation cited here does not establish one universal command for endlessly looping a concat list directly into YouTube RTMP, or a universal choice between stream-copy and re-encoding. Verify the command and options against your FFmpeg installation and media, then test with a private or unlisted stream before using it for a public channel.

Test before you rely on the channel
Use a short test to catch playlist and connection problems before treating a stream as unattended. YouTube recommends checking the preview, confirming the stream is reachable, and monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube: Live streaming tips
- Confirm files appear in the intended order and that looping behaves as expected.
- Listen for missing, unexpectedly loud, or discontinuous audio as files change.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before publishing.
- After launch, check that the stream is reachable from the channel and watch pages.
- Monitor the stream after it starts rather than assuming a playlist guarantees continuous transmission.
A playlist does not, by itself, guarantee uninterrupted transmission, automatic reconnection, uninterrupted archiving, or 24/7 availability. Plan who will monitor the encoder and how it will be restarted if a computer, connection, or YouTube ingest fails. Troubleshoot common setup problems
The concat playlist produces gaps or visual glitches
Check that files have matching streams and that duration information is accurate. Because the demuxer bases later timestamps on file durations, a mismatch can affect transitions. If the media is not compatible for demuxer concatenation, consider a workflow that re-encodes consistently rather than expecting the demuxer to repair it.
OBS does not list VLC Video
Install VLC on the machine running OBS; the source depends on VLC libraries. Then check OBS’s source list again.

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Confirm that the stream is created in YouTube Studio and that the encoder has the matching YouTube server URL and stream key. Check that the channel is eligible for live streaming and inspect the Live Control Room preview. If a key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder with the replacement.
The channel stops when the computer or connection fails
With a local OBS or FFmpeg setup, the computer and its internet connection are part of the live path. A playlist does not remove that dependency or guarantee automatic recovery. Decide whether you can monitor and restore the local encoder or need a cloud service to run the uploaded videos instead.
