To stream a file through FFmpeg to YouTube Live at 1080p and 60 fps, use an H.264 encoder, YouTube’s recommended 17 Mbps video bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo audio, and an RTMPS ingest URL. The command below is an illustrative SDR starting point; replace the input and stream key, then test the actual source and connection before broadcasting.
FFmpeg command for a 1080p60 YouTube Live stream
This template is for a video file with an optional audio track. It scales the video to 1920Ă—1080, sets the output to 60 fps, and sends an H.264/AAC stream to YouTube over RTMPS:

INPUTwith the path to your file, such asdocumentary.mp4. - In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and find the stream URL and stream key for your broadcast. Replace
STREAM_KEYwith the key, keeping it private. YouTube’s setup guidance is at YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder. - Run the command from a terminal where FFmpeg is installed and
libx264is available. Check the FFmpeg build if it reports an unknown encoder or cannot open the input. - Confirm that YouTube receives the expected resolution and frame rate, and review stream-health messages before starting the event.
FFmpeg processes inputs and outputs according to the options supplied for each; a file, capture device, desktop capture, and network input do not all use the same input syntax. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and its protocol documentation when adapting the source or output.
What the command’s settings do
Resolution, frame rate, and pixel format
scale=1920:1080 sets the output dimensions, while fps=60 requests 60 frames per second. These filters may resize or duplicate/drop frames depending on the source; they do not create genuine detail or motion that is absent from it. If the source has a different aspect ratio, scaling directly to 1920×1080 can distort it. Choose a fit, crop, or padding approach appropriate to the material instead. yuv420p is a common compatible pixel format for an H.264 SDR stream, but it does not by itself guarantee correct color metadata or preserve the source’s appearance.

Codec, bitrate, and rate control
-c:v libx264 selects H.264 encoding, and -b:v 17M -maxrate 17M sets a 17 Mbps target and maximum. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p60; those figures are for that codec and format, not for every encoding option. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). The -bufsize 34M value is a practical VBV starting point in this example, not a separately stated YouTube requirement. If your connection or encoder cannot sustain the target, lower the bitrate and verify the resulting stream rather than allowing frequent drops. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
YouTube’s table gives different figures for other codecs: for 1080p60, AV1/H.265 is listed at 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. Do not apply the H.264 bitrate figures to AV1 or H.265. The command here is an H.264 SDR example, not an HDR configuration.
Keyframes
-g 120 and -keyint_min 120 set a 120-frame interval, equivalent to two seconds at 60 fps. -sc_threshold 0 disables scene-change keyframe insertion so the interval remains regular. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. FFmpeg describes its encoder options in the codec documentation.
Audio
-map 0:a:0? maps the first audio stream if one exists; the question mark makes it optional. The audio settings encode AAC at 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz, stereo. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. If your input has no audio, the optional mapping lets this command proceed without that stream.

Input pacing and RTMPS output
-re reads a file at approximately its real-time rate, which is appropriate for simulating a live feed from a prerecorded file. It is not a general fix for a live capture source. The output uses RTMPS, which YouTube recommends for ingest. The exact server URL and key should come from Live Control Room; do not share the key or place a real key in a public script or screenshot.
Prepare and check the stream before going live
- Test your upload speed and leave practical headroom above the stream’s sustained bitrate so other network activity or bitrate variation does not consume all available capacity.
- Run a test with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. A static clip or silent test may not reveal issues that appear during the actual program.
- Check YouTube’s detected resolution and frame rate, then watch the stream-health status for warnings or errors.
- Confirm the input has the video and audio tracks you intend to map. If the source is not a file, use the correct device or network-input syntax for your operating system and FFmpeg build.
YouTube transcodes live streams for different viewers, so the ingest resolution is not the only playback format available to an audience. Latency is the delay between capture/encoding and viewer playback; lower-latency choices can increase buffering. The FFmpeg command alone cannot promise a fixed end-to-end delay.
Adapt the template to your source
File, camera, screen, or network input
The example’s -i INPUT is a placeholder for a file. Camera and screen capture inputs require platform-specific device names and options; an incoming network stream may also require protocol or reconnect settings. Keep the output encoding and YouTube destination separate from input-specific options, and verify that your installed build supports the chosen input and encoder.
Software encoding and hardware encoding
This template uses libx264 with the veryfast preset. Whether that preset or a hardware encoder is suitable depends on the source, computer, FFmpeg build, and available encoding hardware. Check encoder availability and test for dropped frames and acceptable image quality on your own setup; no single preset or GPU can be assumed best for every system.

SDR versus HDR
The command is intended as an SDR H.264 path. YouTube’s guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR, which requires a different configuration. Do not treat the SDR pixel-format line as sufficient to configure HDR color handling.
Troubleshooting common FFmpeg and YouTube Live problems
FFmpeg says the input cannot be opened
Check the file path, permissions, quoting, and whether FFmpeg can identify the input. For a camera, screen, or network feed, replace the file-style input with the correct source syntax for that platform.
Unknown encoder or unavailable device
Your FFmpeg build may not include libx264, or the requested capture device may not be available to it. Check the build’s listed encoders and devices, then select an encoder or input supported by that installation.
YouTube does not receive the stream
Verify the RTMPS destination and current stream key in Live Control Room, confirm the key has not been mistyped or revoked, and check that the network allows the connection. Treat the key like a password: regenerate it if it has been exposed.

Dropped frames, buffering, or unstable stream health
The machine may be unable to encode in real time, or the upload path may not sustain the configured bitrate. Test the connection, reduce the bitrate if needed, and test again with representative content. Avoid assuming that the recommended target is sustainable on every connection.
Wrong aspect ratio, color, or apparent frame rate
Inspect the source dimensions, aspect ratio, frame rate, and color before forcing filters. Directly scaling to 1920Ă—1080 can stretch a non-16:9 source; setting 60 fps cannot restore missing motion, and yuv420p does not automatically establish correct color metadata.
Audio is missing or unusable
Check whether the input contains an audio stream and whether -map 0:a:0? selects the intended one. Confirm the source is audible before encoding and inspect YouTube’s health indicators during the test.
Copyright and prerecorded content on a live channel
Using FFmpeg to transmit a file does not grant permission to stream its contents. Make sure you have the necessary rights to the documentary footage, music, narration, images, and any other material, including rights for the intended live use. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live stream; review the platform’s current rules and resolve claims or restrictions before relying on a program for a scheduled broadcast. A live stream’s technical success does not establish that the content complies with copyright rules or YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

For a channel built around prerecorded material, make the rights and the value of the programming clear rather than relying on repetition alone.
