Fed to the Wolves, a documentary from Hunters for Hunters, brings rural Minnesotans’ concerns about living and working in wolf country into a debate shaped by federal protections, state management plans and sharply differing public views. An October 6, 2026 report by Minnesota Ag Connection says the film was released online October 2; it does not identify a viewing platform.

What the film reportedly covers

According to the Minnesota Ag Connection report, Fed to the Wolves uses firsthand accounts from people in areas where wolves live. The reported subjects include livestock and pet losses, deer populations, agricultural livelihoods, private property rights, and the roles of state and federal agencies.

Those accounts offer a view of concerns raised by people affected by wolf presence. They should not be read as a representative survey of Minnesotans or as research measuring the wolf population. The report describes the film’s focus; the film itself has not been independently reviewed here.

Is there a wolf hunting season in Minnesota?

No. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says gray wolves again became federally protected as a threatened species effective February 10, 2022. Under current federal guidelines, wolves may be taken only in defense of human life, and wolf hunting and trapping are illegal in Minnesota. See the DNR’s wolf management guidance for current rules.

Minnesota did allow wolf seasons under state law from 2012 through 2014, when wolves were managed by the state rather than the federal government. Those historical seasons do not describe what is legal now.

Can I shoot a wolf to protect livestock or a pet?

The DNR says current federal guidelines permit taking a wolf only in defense of human life. That is not a general authorization to shoot a wolf to protect livestock or a pet. Anyone facing a wolf-related incident should consult current DNR guidance rather than rely on accounts of past seasons or assume that livestock protection is covered by the rule.

What Minnesota’s wolf-management plan says

Minnesota’s current wolf-management plan was finalized in 2022 for a 10-year period. The DNR says it provides direction on monitoring, population management, depredation control, public safety, research and public engagement. Its stated aims include maintaining a connected, resilient wolf population while minimizing and addressing conflicts between people and wolves. The plan is described on the DNR’s wolf-management overview.

The population goal is not a current count

The DNR says the plan seeks to maintain a population comparable to recent estimates of 2,200–3,000 wolves across much of the current range. That figure is a management goal, not a newly reported census. The DNR describes its population surveys as statistical estimates rather than counts of every wolf; the cited overview does not provide a numeric current population estimate.

How Minnesotans’ views differ

Public opinion depends on which group is asked. In a survey conducted for the 2020 plan update, the DNR reports that 80 percent or more of livestock producers and deer hunters supported establishing both a wolf hunting season and a trapping season. Among residents overall, the reported support was 41 percent for hunting and 30 percent for trapping. These are survey findings, not views attributable to every member of those groups. The DNR’s survey summary also reports differences among residents by ideology.

The DNR separately says Minnesotans agree that maintaining a wolf population is important, and that residents on average favored keeping wolf numbers and occupied habitat about the same. Its statement that “Minnesotans clearly value wolves” is the agency’s characterization, not evidence that residents hold identical views about hunting, trapping or conflict management. The agency summarizes these findings on its public perspectives page.

How to assess the debate the film raises

Wolf-management arguments are easier to evaluate when population goals, conflict response, legal authority and representation are considered separately. The film’s reported firsthand accounts can help illuminate lived concerns, while official plans and survey findings answer different questions.

  • Population objective and evidence: distinguish a plan’s target from an estimate of how many wolves are currently present, and note how that estimate was produced.
  • Human-wolf conflict: consider how livestock losses, public safety and other conflicts are addressed, including depredation-control measures.
  • Legal authority: check which protections and rules apply at the time; a past state season is not proof that a season is currently lawful.
  • Whose experience is represented: firsthand accounts can document individual experiences, while surveys describe the views of defined groups and populations.

For additional science-based education about wolves, ecology and the wolf-human relationship, the DNR points readers to the International Wolf Center.
