That preserves the franchise’s original introductions, character arcs, and reveals. The one major complication is The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift: it was the third movie released, but its story takes place after Fast & Furious 6 because of that film’s mid-credits scene involving Han and Deckard Shaw.
Below you’ll find the release order, the chronological story order, the correct place for Hobbs & Shaw, the status of future films, and the best way to watch the currently released saga.

Fast & Furious movies in release order
The mainline saga currently has 10 released films, from The Fast and the Furious in 2001 through Fast X in 2023. Hobbs & Shaw is included separately below because it is a theatrical spin-off rather than a numbered mainline entry.
- The Fast and the Furious (2001)
Dominic Toretto, Brian O’Conner, Letty Ortiz, and Mia Toretto are introduced in a Los Angeles story built around street racing, undercover police work, and hijacked electronics shipments. - 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
Brian moves to Miami and teams up with Roman Pearce and Tej Parker. - The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
Sean Boswell is sent to Tokyo, where he enters the world of drift racing. Han becomes a major character. Although this is the third release, it is not the third story chronologically. - Fast & Furious (2009)
The fourth mainline film reunites much of the original central cast and begins the franchise’s transition toward a larger ensemble format. - Fast Five (2011)
The series expands more decisively into ensemble-heist filmmaking while keeping cars, racing, and driving at the center of its action. - Fast & Furious 6 (2013)
This film contains the continuity reveal that changes where Tokyo Drift belongs in the overall timeline. - Furious 7 (2015)
The story continues the post-Tokyo Drift continuity and develops the conflict involving Deckard Shaw. - The Fate of the Furious (2017)
Dom is coerced into betraying his team, sending the crew into another international-scale mission. - F9: The Fast Saga (2021)
The saga continues with a new chapter in the Toretto family story and the wider team’s increasingly global adventures. - Fast X (2023)
The most recent released mainline film, and the tenth movie in the Fast & Furious Saga.
The best order for a first-time viewer
Use the release order above. It is the most natural introduction because the franchise was designed to evolve film by film—from a relatively grounded street-racing crime thriller into a large-scale international action series. It also lets you experience the Han continuity reveal in the same way audiences originally did.

Release order is especially helpful with Tokyo Drift. Watching it third is historically correct, even though later films establish that its main events occur later in the story. Moving it to a different position on a first viewing can make the continuity feel cleaner, but it also treats a later retcon as though it had been part of the original plan.
Fast & Furious movies in chronological story order
If you prefer to follow the in-universe timeline rather than the order in which the films were released, use this sequence:
- The Fast and the Furious (2001)
- 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
- Fast & Furious (2009)
- Fast Five (2011)
- Fast & Furious 6 (2013)
- The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
- Furious 7 (2015)
- The Fate of the Furious (2017)
- F9: The Fast Saga (2021)
- Fast X (2023)
The years in parentheses are release years, not chronological dates. The unusual placement of Tokyo Drift is deliberate: Fast & Furious 6 uses its mid-credits scene to connect Han’s apparent death to Deckard Shaw and position the events of Tokyo Drift after the fourth, fifth, and sixth films.
Where does Hobbs & Shaw fit?
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) is the franchise’s first theatrical stand-alone spin-off. It centers on Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson, and Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham.
Rank #2
For a complete theatrical-film marathon, watch it after The Fate of the Furious and before F9: The Fast Saga:
The Fast and the Furious → 2 Fast 2 Furious → Fast & Furious → Fast Five → Fast & Furious 6 → Tokyo Drift → Furious 7 → The Fate of the Furious → Hobbs & Shaw → F9 → Fast X.
You can also skip it without losing the mainline plot’s basic continuity. It is best understood as a side adventure in the broader theatrical universe, not as the ninth numbered chapter of the central saga.
What is the difference between the two orders?
| Order | Best for | Main advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | First-time viewers | Preserves the original character introductions, pacing, and reveals | Tokyo Drift temporarily appears out of timeline order |
| Chronological order | Rewatches and viewers who prioritize timeline continuity | Keeps the Han-related events in their in-universe sequence | Rearranges a film that was intentionally released much earlier |
Neither sequence is a mistake. Release order is the stronger recommendation for a first watch; chronological order is a useful alternative once you understand why Tokyo Drift moves.
Are there other Fast & Furious movies or short films?
The core guide above covers the 10 released mainline films. The theatrical spin-off Hobbs & Shaw is listed separately so that readers do not confuse the ten-film mainline collection with the broader movie universe.
The franchise also includes short-form and television material. Those entries are not included in the core movie order because they are not necessary to follow the main theatrical saga. A wider franchise chronology would need to identify each short and television project individually rather than mixing them into the ten-film list without explanation.
What comes next?
Fast Forever
Universal currently lists Fast Forever for theatrical release on March 17, 2028. It has not been released as of August 11, 2026, so it should not be counted among the completed films or inserted into either finished watch order. Peacock describes it as the twelfth film in the franchise and reports that the film series is planned to conclude around that release.
That date and plan can change before production and release. Treat Fast Forever as the next announced chapter, not as a movie currently available to watch.

Untitled live-action Peacock series
An untitled live-action Fast & Furious series is also in development for Peacock. No premiere date had been set in the cited announcement, so it is future franchise information rather than a required viewing step.
How to collect or watch the films at home
For viewers who want the released mainline saga in one physical purchase, the most direct option is a Fast & Furious 10-movie collection in 4K Ultra HD plus digital format. Universal’s home-entertainment catalog and Amazon’s Prime Video catalog identify a collection containing the 10 released mainline films through Fast X.
Be precise about what that set includes: it covers the ten released mainline films, not Hobbs & Shaw, future releases, or the forthcoming Fast Forever. It is therefore a complete collection of the released numbered saga through Fast X, but not a permanently complete collection of every future franchise film.
For collectors focused on the original movie, Universal also announced The Fast and the Furious 25th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Edition in June 2026. That edition is a supplemental choice for fans of the 2001 film, not a substitute for the ten-film set if your goal is to own the mainline saga.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I watch the Fast & Furious movies in release order or chronological order?
Watch them in release order if this is your first time. Use chronological order for a rewatch or if you specifically want the in-universe timeline. The key change is moving Tokyo Drift from third to after Fast & Furious 6.

- Factory sealed DVD
Why is Tokyo Drift not third in chronological order?
Although it was released in 2006, Fast & Furious 6 later established that its events occur after the fourth, fifth, and sixth films. The mid-credits scene connects Han’s apparent death to Deckard Shaw.
Is Hobbs & Shaw part of the main Fast & Furious series?
It is a theatrical spin-off, not a numbered mainline film. Include it after The Fate of the Furious and before F9 if you want to watch every theatrical movie.

Is Fast Forever available to watch?
No. As of August 11, 2026, Fast Forever is an announced future film scheduled for March 17, 2028. It should not be included in a completed watch order yet.
