Every Major Death in One Piece, in Chronological Order

Here is every major confirmed or strongly established death in One Piece, arranged by when it happened in the story rather than when the manga revealed it.

Spoiler warning: This article covers major manga-canon deaths and major flashback deaths throughout One Piece, including Final Saga developments researched through August 11, 2026.

In chronological story order, the deaths that shape One Piece begin with Joy Boy during the Void Century and continue through the deaths of Vegapunk, Saturn, and King Harald. This is not a list of every unnamed casualty or every apparent death. It focuses on named characters whose confirmed deaths receive substantial narrative attention or materially change the world, a character’s motivation, or the direction of the story.

The series often uses apparent death as a fake-out. For that reason, the main list includes characters whose deaths are confirmed or strongly established in canon, while unresolved and reversed deaths are discussed separately.

How this One Piece death list works

The entries below follow in-universe chronology, not the order in which readers first learn about them. Flashbacks therefore appear at the point when the death occurred in the world of the story. Dates such as “400 years ago,” “20 years ago,” and “during the Void Century” are retained where the exact calendar date is unknown.

“Major death” is an editorial description, not an official One Piece category. The list includes named characters whose deaths are explicitly shown, stated, or subsequently treated as settled by the manga. It does not attempt to count every civilian, soldier, pirate, Marine, animal, or unnamed victim of a battle or disaster.

For readers who want to verify the events in their original chapter context, a One Piece manga box set is the most direct companion to a chronology built around manga canon.

Ancient and historical deaths

1. Joy Boy — approximately 800 years ago, during the Void Century

Joy Boy was defeated during the Great War between the Great Kingdom and the Twenty Kingdoms. He is canonically dead, although the precise circumstances of his death remain tied to the still-unresolved history of the Void Century.

His era ended, but his influence did not. Joy Boy’s promises, the Poneglyphs, his connection to Fish-Man Island, and the Haki preserved from his time continue to affect the present. His death is closely connected to the Ancient Weapons, the One Piece, and Luffy’s role as the successor—or inheritor—of Joy Boy’s will.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Davy D. Jones — date unknown, more than 800 years ago

Davy D. Jones is a legendary deceased pirate associated with the Davy Family and the origin of the Davy Back Fight. The canon does not provide a reliable account of exactly how or when he died. His story is preserved through legend, and parts of that history remain contradictory or deliberately obscure.

Because his death is not documented like Roger’s, Oden’s, or Ace’s, Davy D. Jones is best treated as an ancient legendary death rather than a fully recorded on-panel death. His approximate placement before the known historical eras is consequently uncertain.

3. Mont Blanc Noland — 400 years ago

Mont Blanc Noland was executed by the King of Lvneel after returning from the Grand Line and reporting that he had discovered the City of Gold. By the time he returned, the apparent disappearance of Shandora made his account look like a lie. The court chose to believe that Noland had fabricated the story, and he was put to death.

Noland’s execution establishes the historical tragedy connecting Skypiea, Shandora, the Shandians, and the Golden Bell. It also introduces one of One Piece’s recurring ideas: political authority can suppress or destroy the truth while preserving an official version of events.

4. Kalgara — approximately 400 years ago

Kalgara, the principal Shandian warrior and Noland’s closest friend, died after Noland’s final departure. The two men never reunited. Changes in the island’s geography and later political decisions separated them, leaving Kalgara unaware that Noland had continued trying to keep his promise.

Kalgara’s death completes the emotional tragedy of the Noland flashback. For centuries afterward, the Shandians continued ringing the Golden Bell, preserving the memory of a promise that history had misrepresented.

5. Rocks D. Xebec — 38 years ago, at God Valley

Rocks D. Xebec was killed after the God Valley conflict. Current canon material establishes that Figarland Garling ultimately finished Rocks after Roger and Garp helped break the immediate threat posed by Rocks’s corrupted form. The public account credited Garp with the victory and concealed much of what actually happened at God Valley.

Rocks’s death dissolved the Rocks Pirates and cleared the way for several of their future members to become major powers. It also links a character’s death to the World Government’s suppression of history: the true events of God Valley were hidden because revealing them would expose uncomfortable facts about the Celestial Dragons, Roger, Garp, and the balance of power.

Deaths that shaped the characters’ childhoods and backstories

6. The Donquixote family matriarch — approximately 33 years ago

The unnamed mother of Donquixote Doflamingo and Donquixote Rosinante died from illness and deprivation after the family abandoned its status as Celestial Dragons. The family’s attempt to live as ordinary people collapsed under poverty, hostility, and the consequences of Homing’s decision.

Her death is the first major loss in the Donquixote family’s civilian life. It helps explain Doflamingo’s radicalization, Rosinante’s compassion, and the failure of Homing’s attempt to replace inherited privilege with an ordinary human existence.

7. Fisher Tiger — approximately 15 years ago

Fisher Tiger died after being wounded in a Marine ambush. Although a human blood transfusion could have saved him, he refused to accept human blood. His choice reflected the hatred and trauma produced by the enslavement and abuse he had suffered, even though it ultimately cost him his life.

Tiger’s death deepened the ideological conflict between Fish-Men and humans. His legacy shaped Jinbe, Arlong, Koala, and the later Fish-Man Island storyline. It also shows how a death can preserve a character’s political beliefs while leaving later generations to decide whether those beliefs should be continued or challenged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Queen Otohime — approximately 10 years ago

Queen Otohime was assassinated while campaigning for peaceful coexistence between Fish-Men and humans. Her death was then exploited by Hody Jones and others, who used it to intensify hatred toward humans.

Otohime and Fisher Tiger represent opposing political memories. Both wanted a better future for Fish-Man Island, but their deaths produced different legacies: Tiger’s became associated with resistance and distrust, while Otohime’s became associated with diplomacy, hope, and the difficult work of changing public opinion.

9. Banchina — approximately 10 years ago

Banchina, Usopp’s mother, died from illness while Usopp was still a child. Before her death, Usopp repeatedly claimed that pirates were approaching, trying to make life more exciting and perhaps to keep alive the possibility that his absent father would return.

Her death forms part of the emotional foundation of Usopp’s identity. His relationship with lies, courage, fear, and truth is not simply comic relief; it grows from a child trying to cope with loss and loneliness.

10. Bell-mère — approximately 10 years ago

Bell-mère was executed by Arlong after refusing to deny that Nami and Nojiko were her daughters. She could have attempted to save herself by pretending that she had no children, but she chose to acknowledge them even though doing so guaranteed her death.

Bell-mère’s final declaration of love is the central trauma of Nami’s childhood and the emotional foundation of the Arlong Park arc. Her death also establishes a pattern repeated throughout the series: a character’s final act is often a public affirmation of love, chosen family, or a principle that is more important than survival.

11. Kuina — approximately 10 years ago

Kuina died as a child after falling down the stairs, according to the account given to Zoro. The death is treated as real by the story. Fan theories have questioned the simplicity of the explanation, but no canon evidence has overturned it.

Kuina’s death gives Zoro the promise that defines his ambition: he will become the world’s greatest swordsman and carry forward the dream they shared. Her death is therefore not a battle sacrifice or political execution; it is a private loss that becomes the foundation of another character’s life goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Dr. Hiriluk — approximately six years ago

Dr. Hiriluk was executed after consuming what he believed was a poisonous mushroom intended to cure him. He accepted death to protect Chopper and to prevent Wapol’s regime from learning more about his medical work.

Hiriluk’s death defines Chopper’s medical philosophy. His belief that a person truly dies only when forgotten becomes one of Drum Island’s central ideas and continues to influence how Chopper understands medicine, compassion, and the purpose of a doctor.

13. Tom — approximately four years ago

Tom, the legendary shipwright who built the Oro Jackson, was executed by the World Government after being framed over the Sea Train incident. He was also the adoptive father of Franky and Iceburg.

Tom’s death drives Franky’s guilt and shapes Iceburg’s career. It also connects Water 7’s political history to the Sea Train and to the wider conflict over the ancient weapon Pluton. The government’s decision to punish Tom illustrates how institutions in One Piece use legal authority to eliminate people who possess dangerous knowledge.

14. Gol D. Roger — 24 years before the present adventure

Gol D. Roger was publicly executed by the World Government in Loguetown. Rather than ending piracy, the execution began the Great Pirate Era: Roger used his final public moment to challenge the world to find the treasure he had left behind.

Roger’s death is the historical inciting event of the entire series. Unlike many deaths in One Piece, it is not primarily framed as a private tragedy. It is a deliberate transmission of a challenge, turning an execution into the opening move of a global race for the One Piece.

15. Donquixote Rosinante, “Corazon” — 13 years ago

Donquixote Rosinante was executed by Doflamingo after his undercover Marine identity was exposed. Before his death, Rosinante secured the Ope Ope no Mi for Trafalgar Law and helped Law escape the Amber Lead disease crisis.

Corazon’s death creates Law’s adult motivation and his opposition to Doflamingo. It also explains Law’s emotional connection to the Straw Hat alliance and the importance he places on carrying forward the kindness of the man who saved him.

16. Thatch — before the Paramount War

Thatch, a commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, was murdered by Marshall D. Teach after finding the Yami Yami no Mi. Teach’s betrayal began a chain of events that led Ace to pursue him, Ace to be captured, and the Whitebeard Pirates to confront the Marines at Marineford.

Thatch is therefore the first unseen domino in the Marineford tragedy. Although his death receives less screen time than Ace’s or Whitebeard’s, it directly enables Blackbeard’s rise and the war that changes the balance of the world.

The Marineford turning point

17. Kozuki Oden — 20 years ago

Kozuki Oden was executed by Kaido after surviving an hour in boiling oil while holding his retainers above the cauldron. Orochi and Kaido had promised a reprieve, but the terms were changed, and Kaido shot Oden after the ordeal.

Oden’s death establishes the political structure of Wano and the conditions under which Kaido and Orochi ruled. It also sets the Scabbards’ time-travel mission in motion, establishes Momonosuke’s claim, and gives the rebellion its promise to open Wano’s borders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

18. Kozuki Toki — 20 years ago

Kozuki Toki died after sending Momonosuke and several retainers twenty years into the future. The story strongly presents her final appearance as her death, while her prophecy becomes an ideological foundation for the Wano rebellion.

Toki’s decision turns her death into an act of preparation. She does not simply perish with the old generation; she sends the people needed to challenge Wano’s future rulers into the era in which the rebellion can succeed.

19. Portgas D. Ace — during the Paramount War

Portgas D. Ace died after shielding Luffy from Akainu’s attack at Marineford. The official character material identifies Ace as 20 years old at the time of his death, and the Marineford story makes clear that the fatal injury came while he protected his brother.

Ace’s death breaks Luffy psychologically and ends the rescue objective of the war. It also marks the transition from the first half of the adventure to the two-year training period. Ace’s final gratitude to the people who loved him gives the death its emotional resolution, even though the battle itself ends in failure for Luffy and the Whitebeard Pirates.

20. Edward Newgate, “Whitebeard” — immediately after Ace

Whitebeard died at Marineford after sustaining catastrophic injuries and fighting Blackbeard’s forces. Even at the end, he confirmed that the One Piece exists, turning his final words into a worldwide declaration.

Whitebeard’s death ends the old era and creates the power vacuum that Blackbeard exploits. Together, Ace’s and Whitebeard’s deaths define the conclusion of the Paramount War: one destroys Luffy’s sense of safety, while the other removes the last major pillar of the previous pirate age.

Post-timeskip and New World deaths

21. Absalom — during the two-year timeskip

Absalom was killed by Shiryu after Blackbeard’s crew obtained his Clear-Clear Fruit. His death is first reported indirectly and is later confirmed through the transfer of his Devil Fruit power to Shiryu.

Absalom is a borderline inclusion because he is less central than Ace, Oden, or Whitebeard. His death nevertheless matters to the continuity of Thriller Bark and demonstrates that the Blackbeard Pirates are actively collecting powerful abilities from defeated or murdered opponents.

22. Monet — during the Punk Hazard incident

Monet died when Caesar Clown mistakenly stabbed the heart he believed belonged to Smoker. The heart actually belonged to Monet. The injury killed her before she could activate the self-destruct mechanism intended to destroy Punk Hazard.

Monet’s death is a direct consequence of the dangerous heart-swapping operation used on Punk Hazard. It also shows how Caesar’s recklessness and Doflamingo’s criminal network could turn even their own subordinates into disposable tools.

23. Vergo — during the Punk Hazard incident

Vergo died after Law’s slash divided the laboratory and the surrounding structure once Vergo had been defeated. A senior figure in Doflamingo’s organization and a corrupt Marine officer, Vergo had operated undercover for years.

His death ends one of Doflamingo’s most important infiltrations and removes a major link between the Donquixote Pirates and the Marines. Alongside Monet’s death, it marks the collapse of Doflamingo’s Punk Hazard operation.

24. Pedro — during the Whole Cake Island escape

Pedro sacrificed himself by detonating explosives to clear a path for the Straw Hats and their allies to escape Whole Cake Island. His death is treated as permanent and later becomes a major motivation for Carrot and the Minks.

Pedro’s sacrifice succeeds tactically: it gives the escaping group the time it needs. It also passes his belief in the coming “dawn” to the next generation. His death is one of the clearest examples of a voluntary sacrifice that both solves an immediate problem and transfers responsibility to survivors.

25. Shimotsuki Yasuie — during the Wano storyline

Shimotsuki Yasuie was publicly shot and executed by Orochi. In his final act, he deliberately claimed responsibility for the alliance’s crescent-moon symbol so that Orochi’s attempt to identify and terrorize the rebellion would fail.

Yasuie’s death exposes the cruelty of Orochi’s rule and motivates Toko, the Scabbards, and the wider alliance. What Orochi intends as a public execution becomes an act of resistance: Yasuie sacrifices his reputation and life to protect the rebellion’s real meaning.

Deaths during the Raid on Onigashima

26. Izo — during the Raid on Onigashima

Izo was killed after confronting CP0 agents during the raid. His death closes the arc of a former Whitebeard commander returning to protect Oden’s homeland.

Izo’s sacrifice also ties Wano’s present conflict to the Whitebeard Pirates’ past. He is later honored alongside the fallen retainers and allies who gave their lives during the fight to free Wano.

27. Ashura Doji — during the Raid on Onigashima

Ashura Doji died while tackling Kanjuro’s explosive drawing of Oden away from the other Scabbards. The explosion killed him, and his death was later explicitly confirmed in the manga and anime.

Ashura’s final act protects the other Scabbards. His death is inseparable from Kanjuro’s betrayal: the enemy weaponizes the appearance of a trusted friend, and Ashura pays the price for preventing that deception from killing more people.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

28. Kurozumi Kanjuro — during the Raid on Onigashima

Kanjuro was fatally struck by Kin’emon after the final confrontation involving his Oden disguise and his attack on Momonosuke. Even after Kanjuro’s death, his remaining creation, Kazenbo, continued to act.

Kanjuro’s death ends the personal betrayal at the heart of the Scabbards’ story. It also emphasizes that a creator’s last work can remain dangerous after the creator is gone, extending the consequences of his treachery beyond his own death.

29. Kurozumi Orochi — during the conclusion of the Wano raid

Orochi was burned by Kazenbo and finally decapitated by Denjiro. His death ended his rule and the immediate Kurozumi political regime in Wano.

Orochi’s long series of apparent escapes finally ends with a confirmed death. Denjiro’s role gives the conclusion a direct connection to the suffering caused by Orochi’s rule and to the retainers’ long-delayed revenge.

30. Guernika — during the Raid on Onigashima

Guernika, a CP0 agent, was fatally struck by Kaido after interfering in the fight between Kaido and Luffy. He completed his final assignment by photographing Luffy’s awakened form before dying.

Guernika’s death links the World Government’s attempt to control the raid with the public revelation of Luffy’s transformation. Even while mortally wounded, he completed the assignment that allowed the government—and the wider world—to confront the significance of Luffy’s awakened power.

Final Saga deaths and the changing world order

31. Vice Admiral T-Bone — after the Levely, before the Egghead climax

Vice Admiral T-Bone was killed by a civilian seeking the Cross Guild bounty placed on Marines. The Marines concealed the details publicly, while Cross Guild rewarded the killer.

T-Bone’s death demonstrates that Cross Guild’s bounty system has consequences beyond battles between famous pirates and Marines. Ordinary civilians can now be drawn into the new power struggle, while the government’s decision to hide the truth shows how fragile its public image has become.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

32. Nefertari Cobra — during the Levely flashback

Nefertari Cobra was mortally attacked by Imu and the Five Elders after learning about Imu and the World Government’s hidden history. With his final moments, Cobra gave Sabo a message for Luffy and Vivi concerning the Nefertari family’s connection to the Will of D.

Cobra’s death destabilizes the global political order. It frames Sabo, drives Vivi into hiding, and expands the historical importance of the Nefertari family. His final message ensures that the information he uncovered survives even though the government attempts to erase the circumstances of his death.

33. Vegapunk satellites Shaka, Pythagoras, and Atlas — during the Egghead Incident

Several Vegapunk satellites were destroyed during the Egghead Incident. Shaka, Pythagoras, and Atlas should not be treated as a simple group death identical to the death of a single human character.

The satellites are technological bodies linked to shared systems and consciousness. Some parts of Vegapunk’s work survive through Punk Records and the remaining satellites. These are therefore best described as functional or bodily deaths: important bodies and identities are destroyed, but the technological legacy is not erased in the same way a conventional human life is.

34. Dr. Vegapunk — during the Egghead Incident

Dr. Vegapunk died after Kizaru delivered the final injury during the Egghead conflict. His pre-recorded global broadcast began as a consequence of his death. Although his brain, records, and satellite legacy continued in altered forms, the original Vegapunk’s death is treated as real.

This turns Egghead from a local escape story into a world-historical disclosure. Vegapunk’s death reveals information about the Void Century, the Ancient Weapons, and the future sinking of the world. In narrative terms, his death is also a deliberate trigger: he uses the end of his life to release knowledge that the World Government would otherwise suppress.

35. Jaygarcia Saturn — after the Egghead Incident

Imu removed Saturn’s immortality and killed him after judging the Egghead outcome a failure. Saturn withered away in front of the Marines, leaving only his bones.

Saturn’s death proves that the Five Elders are not beyond punishment. More importantly, it makes Imu’s authority over the World Government explicit: even one of its highest-ranking figures can be discarded when the hidden ruler decides that he has failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

36. King Harald — Elbaf flashback, revealed during the Final Saga

King Harald was killed by Loki after Harald had been corrupted and controlled through Imu’s power. The Elbaf backstory connects Harald’s apparent attempt to force the giants toward a disastrous course with his inability to resist Imu’s control and immortality.

Harald belongs near the end of this chronology because his death occurs in the Elbaf backstory, even though readers learn about it during the Final Saga. His death extends the series’ growing conflict between the ancient peoples of the world and the power that has manipulated global history for centuries.

Deaths that should not be counted as permanent major deaths

One Piece frequently presents a character as dead—or close enough that other characters believe the person has died—before later revealing that the character survived. Those cases should not be quietly mixed with confirmed deaths.

  • Pell, Bon Clay, Pagaya, Conis’s father, and similar cases: later canon shows them alive, so they are not permanent deaths.
  • Kin’emon, Kikunojo, and several Wano fighters: some suffered apparently fatal injuries or were believed dead, but later canon confirmed survival for some of them.
  • Big Mom and Kaido: both were defeated and presumed lost after Wano, but the researched material does not establish permanent confirmed deaths equivalent to Ace, Whitebeard, or Oden. They should be described as defeated, missing, or unresolved unless later canon confirms otherwise.
  • Monkey D. Garp: he is captured or incapacitated, not confirmed dead.
  • Sabo, Vivi, Bartholomew Kuma, Jewelry Bonney, and Saul: they are alive in the researched continuity.
  • The Going Merry: its destruction is emotionally and narratively important, but it is the loss of a ship rather than a character death. It belongs in a separate discussion of One Piece’s saddest losses.

What major deaths mean in One Piece

The series’ most important deaths usually perform at least one of three functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. They preserve a will. Roger passes the pirate era to the next generation; Oden’s death leaves Wano with a promise to fulfill; Pedro’s sacrifice passes the hope of the dawn to those who survive.
  2. They expose or protect political truth. Noland dies because the court rejects the truth; Cobra dies after learning about the hidden ruler; Vegapunk uses his death to reveal history to the world.
  3. They transfer responsibility. Kuina’s death gives Zoro a lifelong promise, Corazon’s death gives Law a purpose, and Hiriluk’s death shapes Chopper’s idea of what it means to be a doctor.

That is why the emotional weight of a death in One Piece is not measured only by how dramatic the final scene looks. The lasting question is what the dead character leaves behind: a promise, an ideology, forbidden knowledge, a political movement, or a responsibility that another generation must carry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this list based on the One Piece manga or anime?

It is a manga-canon chronology through the researched cutoff of August 11, 2026. The anime may reveal some of these deaths later, and individual scenes can differ in timing or presentation.

Are Big Mom and Kaido dead?

The researched continuity confirms that Big Mom and Kaido were defeated and presumed lost after Wano, but it does not establish permanent deaths equivalent to Ace, Whitebeard, or Oden. They should be described as defeated, missing, or unresolved unless later canon confirms otherwise.

Why are apparent deaths such as Pell and Bon Clay excluded?

They are excluded because later canon shows them alive. This list is intended to cover confirmed or strongly established permanent deaths rather than every scene that initially appears fatal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Going Merry count as a death?

The Going Merry’s destruction is one of the story’s most emotionally significant losses, but it is the destruction of a ship rather than the death of a character. It is better covered in a separate list of major losses.

The Bottom Line

The major deaths of One Piece rarely function as simple endings. From Joy Boy and Roger to Ace, Whitebeard, Cobra, and Vegapunk, each death either preserves a will, exposes a buried truth, or hands an unfinished responsibility to the next generation. That is why the chronology matters: viewed together, these deaths trace the transfer of power and memory across more than 800 years of the story.
