Nicole Michelle Johnson was sentenced on February 10, 2025, to life in prison with all but 50 years suspended after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree child abuse resulting in death. The case came to light on July 28, 2021, when police stopped Johnson in Essex, Maryland, and found the decomposing remains of her two young relatives in separate containers or wrappings inside the trunk of her vehicle.

The traffic stop that exposed the deaths

Johnson was 36 when she pleaded guilty in Baltimore County Circuit Court in August 2024. The victims were siblings: Joshlyn Marie James Johnson, 7, and Larry Darnell O’Neil III, 5.

According to reporting by CBS Baltimore and other local outlets, an officer noticed an unmistakable odor of decomposition during the July 28, 2021, traffic stop in Essex. Officers then saw maggots inside a bag and searched the vehicle’s trunk. They found one child’s remains inside a suitcase or similar enclosed container and the other child’s remains in a plastic bag or tote. Because published reports use different descriptions of the containers, the most accurate summary is that the children were found separately wrapped or contained in the trunk.

Earlier descriptions characterized the encounter as a routine traffic stop. Public reporting reviewed for this case does not establish that police had prior information about the children or that the vehicle search was random. Those details should not be assumed.

Who were the children?

Reports state that Joshlyn and Larry had lived in Dayton, Ohio, before their mother moved to Maryland around 2019 and left them in Johnson’s care. CBS Baltimore reported that the children’s mother later tried to regain custody but that Johnson did not meet her or return the children. WHIO reported that the children’s grandmother said their mother had asked Johnson to care for them after they arrived in Baltimore.

The publicly available accounts do not provide a complete custody history. They do not establish whether there was a formal custody order, a documented child-protective-services finding, or a full record of the family’s contacts with authorities. Those issues should therefore be distinguished from the facts established by Johnson’s guilty plea and sentence.

What investigators said Johnson told them

Police records and news reports attributed several statements to Johnson. She reportedly told investigators that she had been caring for the children because their mother was unable to do so.

According to those accounts, Johnson described an incident at a motel in May 2020 involving Joshlyn. Johnson said she struck the child after Joshlyn tried to take food from a refrigerator. She reportedly said Joshlyn fell and hit her head. Johnson then said she put Joshlyn’s body in a suitcase and kept it in the vehicle for months.

Johnson reportedly told investigators that Larry suffered an injury approximately two months before the traffic stop and never woke up. She said she later placed his body near his sister’s remains.

These statements are investigative allegations attributed to Johnson or police records. They are not, by themselves, an independent forensic account of exactly how either child died. The public reports available in this case do not provide the full autopsy reports or establish a definitive mechanism of death.

What the medical findings established—and what remains unclear

Earlier local reporting stated that Joshlyn weighed 18 pounds and Larry weighed 21 pounds at the time of death. Reports also said that both deaths were ruled homicides by unspecified means.

That wording matters. A ruling of homicide means the deaths were determined to have resulted from the actions of another person, rather than being classified as accidents, suicides, or natural deaths. It does not, without the full medical findings, identify the precise injury or mechanism that caused death. The available reporting does not support turning the children’s weights into a conclusion about the cause of death.

CBS Baltimore also reported that police records indicated Joshlyn may have been dead for approximately a year when her remains were discovered. That estimate should be attributed to police records rather than presented as an independently confirmed forensic certainty.

The guilty plea and sentence

In August 2024, Johnson pleaded guilty in Baltimore County Circuit Court to two counts of first-degree child abuse resulting in death.

She was sentenced on February 10, 2025. The legal sentence was life imprisonment with all but 50 years suspended, meaning the publicly reported active prison term was 50 years. Some coverage shortened this to “50 years in prison,” while other reports described the full legal structure of the sentence.

The sentence should not automatically be read as a guarantee that Johnson will serve exactly 50 calendar years. The sources reviewed do not address every issue that could affect the time served, including applicable credit, parole rules, or Maryland’s sentencing administration.

This was not a murder conviction

Although the children’s deaths were reported as homicides and Johnson pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death, the reported conviction was not a murder conviction. The appropriate legal description is that Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree child abuse resulting in death and received a sentence of life with all but 50 years suspended.

That distinction is important in reporting the case. Before the plea, claims about the events inside the motel, the children’s injuries, and the length of time their remains were kept in the vehicle were investigative statements or allegations. The guilty plea and sentence establish the criminal case’s legal outcome, but public reporting does not supply every underlying medical or evidentiary detail.

February 10, 2025 Johnson was sentenced to life in prison with all but 50 years suspended.

What is firmly established in the public record?

  • Johnson was convicted after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree child abuse resulting in death.
  • The victims were siblings, Joshlyn Marie James Johnson, 7, and Larry Darnell O’Neil III, 5.
  • The children’s remains were discovered in separate containers or wrappings in the trunk of Johnson’s vehicle in Essex on July 28, 2021.
  • Johnson received a sentence of life imprisonment with all but 50 years suspended.
  • Public reports described both deaths as homicides by unspecified means.

What remains uncertain?

  • The complete custody and child-welfare history of the family.
  • The precise medical mechanism that caused either death.
  • The full evidentiary basis for the estimated time that Joshlyn had been dead.
  • Whether Johnson will serve exactly 50 calendar years, since the reviewed reporting does not address credit, parole, or other sentencing-administration details.

The case was exposed by an officer’s observation during a traffic stop, but the public accounts do not answer every question about what happened to the children before that day. The clearest legal conclusion is narrower: Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree child abuse resulting in death and was sentenced to life, with all but 50 years suspended.
