Elon Musk has 14 publicly identified children with four mothers: Canadian author Justine Wilson, musician Claire Boucher—known professionally as Grimes—Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis, and author Ashley St. Clair. The public count includes Nevada Alexander Musk, who died in infancy. It should be understood as a count of publicly identified children, not necessarily a verified total of Musk’s complete biological family.
Wilson is the mother of six of Musk’s children, Zilis of four, Grimes of three, and St. Clair of one. The latest additions to the public count are Zilis’s son Seldon Lycurgus, announced in February 2025, and St. Clair’s son Romulus, whose paternity was later reported to be supported by a DNA test.

1. Justine Wilson: Musk’s first wife and the mother of six
Elon Musk and Canadian author Justine Wilson married in 2000. Their first child, Nevada Alexander Musk, was born in 2002 and died at approximately 10 weeks old from sudden infant death syndrome. The couple later had twins in 2004 and triplet sons in 2006.
Wilson’s six children are:
- Nevada Alexander Musk, who died in infancy;
- Griffin Musk;
- Vivian Jenna Wilson;
- Kai Musk;
- Saxon Musk; and
- Damian Musk.
The twins are Griffin and Vivian, while Kai, Saxon, and Damian are triplets. Reporting on the family history has described the twins and triplets as having been conceived through in vitro fertilization.
#1 Best Overall
Vivian was previously identified in older coverage by another name. In 2022, she legally changed her name to Vivian Jenna Wilson and adopted her mother’s surname. She has publicly described herself as estranged from Musk. Current reporting should use Vivian Jenna Wilson; the former name is relevant only when explaining older public records or coverage.
2. Grimes: three children, including X, Y, and Tau
Musician and artist Claire Boucher, professionally known as Grimes, has three publicly identified children with Musk. The couple’s relationship began publicly in 2018, and they later separated. Their relationship and disputes concerning custody and access have been reported publicly, but the complete current arrangements are not publicly documented.
Grimes’s children are:
- X Æ A-Xii, commonly called X;
- Exa Dark Sideræl, commonly called Y; and
- Techno Mechanicus, commonly called Tau.
X Æ A-Xii (“X”)
The couple’s first child was born in May 2020. Musk and Grimes initially announced the name as X Æ A-12. Because of restrictions concerning characters allowed in official names, the registered form was later reported as X Æ A-Xii, with the Roman numeral “Xii” replacing “12.” The child is generally referred to publicly as X.
Exa Dark Sideræl (“Y”)
Grimes disclosed in 2022 that her daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl, had been born through a surrogate in December 2021. She is commonly nicknamed Y.

Techno Mechanicus (“Tau”)
The existence of the couple’s third child became public in 2023 through reporting connected with Walter Isaacson’s biography of Musk. Grimes later acknowledged that she and Musk had three children. Techno Mechanicus is commonly called Tau.
Although Grimes is often the most prominent name in headlines about Musk’s children, she is the mother of three—not the largest group. Wilson has six, and Zilis has four.
3. Shivon Zilis: the mother of four
Shivon Zilis, a Neuralink executive and former colleague in Musk’s companies, has four publicly identified children with him. The first two were twins whose existence became public through court documents.
Zilis’s children are:
- Strider;
- Azure;
- Arcadia; and
- Seldon Lycurgus.
Strider and Azure
Public court documents revealed that Zilis and Musk had twins born in November 2021: a son named Strider and a daughter named Azure. Later social-media reporting has associated the twins with fuller names such as Strider Sekhar and Azure Comet, or Comet Azure. Because those longer forms are not supported here by publicly available birth records, the safer main-text usage is Strider and Azure.
Rank #3
Arcadia
Zilis and Musk had another child in early 2024. Zilis publicly identified the child as Arcadia, including in a birthday announcement in February 2025.
Seldon Lycurgus
On February 28, 2025, Zilis announced another child with Musk, a son named Seldon Lycurgus. That announcement established Zilis as the mother of four publicly identified children and brought the public count of Musk’s children to 14 when combined with Romulus, St. Clair’s son.
4. Ashley St. Clair: mother of Romulus
Author and political commentator Ashley St. Clair announced in February 2025 that she had given birth to a son with Musk in September 2024. The child was initially identified in court filings by the initials R.S.C. while St. Clair sought paternity recognition and custody-related orders.
A Wall Street Journal report published in April 2025 identified the child as Romulus and reported a Labcorp result giving Musk a 99.9999% probability of paternity. Later coverage treated Romulus as Musk’s son. Musk did not initially confirm paternity publicly, although subsequent statements about seeking full custody were widely viewed as an acknowledgment of the relationship.

The public record does not establish every detail of the custody case, support arrangements, or any final court orders. Those matters should not be presented as settled without current court documentation.
How the count reaches 14
The arithmetic is straightforward:
- Justine Wilson: six children, including Nevada Alexander.
- Grimes: three children.
- Shivon Zilis: four children.
- Ashley St. Clair: one child.
6 + 3 + 4 + 1 = 14 publicly identified children.
Some earlier reports described St. Clair’s child as Musk’s “13th child.” Those stories were published before the public record had been fully consolidated, before the announcement of Zilis’s fourth child, or while paternity and naming details concerning Romulus were still developing. The current public count is 14 when both Seldon Lycurgus and Romulus are included.

What remains private or uncertain?
The 14-child figure is best described as a public count. Reports have cited people close to Musk who believe he may have more biological children than those publicly identified. That possibility has not been independently verified and should not be converted into a definitive larger number.
Several other details also require careful wording:
Best Value
- Public identification is not the same as complete legal documentation. Some names became known through interviews, announcements, court filings, biographies, or social-media posts rather than publicly available birth records.
- Nicknames and legal names should be distinguished. X, Y, Tau, Strider, and Azure are widely used public identifiers, but not every fuller or legal name has equal documentary support.
- Relationship status varies. The four mothers are the women associated with the publicly identified children, not four people who should all be described as Musk’s current romantic partners.
- Custody arrangements are not fully public. Public disputes involving Grimes and St. Clair should not be summarized as if all court terms or current living arrangements are known.
- The children are private individuals. Their schools, residences, medical information, precise schedules, and other sensitive details are not necessary to answer this family-history question.

Because some family, legal, and naming details remain private or have emerged through evolving reports, the count and individual descriptions should be presented as public-record information rather than a complete family dossier.
