On July 26, 2024, Elon Musk reposted an altered video built from Kamala Harris campaign footage. The edit replaced the original audio with a fabricated voiceover; it was not an authentic Harris campaign ad or a recording of her saying the words in it. Its creator described it as parody, but Musk’s repost did not explicitly label it as manipulated or parody.
What was changed in the video?
The clip used visuals from Harris’s campaign advertisement “We Choose Freedom,” but substituted a voiceover that imitated her and attributed fabricated statements to her. One reported line was “I was selected because I am the ultimate diversity hire.” That wording was part of the fabricated audio, not an authentic Harris quote. Lead Stories’ fact-check identified the circulating edit as a parody by the account known as Mr Reagan.
How the three versions differ
| Version | What it contained | Context |
|---|---|---|
| “We Choose Freedom” | Harris campaign footage with its original campaign audio. | The authentic campaign ad, distinct from the later edit. Fortune |
| Mr Reagan’s edited video | Campaign imagery paired with a fabricated voiceover imitating Harris. | The creator characterized it as parody; that does not make the audio genuine. Lead Stories |
| Musk’s repost | The altered video shared on X. | Contemporary coverage said the repost did not explicitly identify the clip as manipulated or parody. The Guardian |
What did the Harris campaign say?
Mia Ehrenberg, a Harris campaign spokesperson, criticized the post. Fortune reported her statement: “We believe the American people want the real freedom, opportunity and security Vice President Harris is offering; not the fake, manipulated lies of Elon Musk and Donald Trump.” Fortune’s account gives the full attributed wording.
Why did the repost draw scrutiny?
The episode fueled debate about manipulated audio, political satire, and whether altered political content should be clearly labeled when shared. Contemporary reporting described concerns about viewers mistaking the fabricated voiceover for real speech, especially when a repost lacks context. Axios’ coverage discussed the parody and platform debate.

Those concerns should not be confused with an established legal or platform-policy finding: the reporting cited here documents criticism and debate, not a determination that Musk broke a law or that X definitively found a rule violation. This account concerns the July 2024 incident, not current X rules or whether the post remains available.
