Echo Season 1 is a five-episode Marvel Studios crime and family drama about Maya Lopez, a deaf Cheyenne-Latin American fighter trying to break free from Wilson Fisk’s influence and reconnect with her Oklahoma family and community. It continues directly from Hawkeye, where Maya appeared to kill Fisk, but it is designed to work as a relatively self-contained story rather than as another Avengers-scale event.

What is Echo about?
The season opens in the aftermath of Hawkeye. Maya Lopez has shot Wilson Fisk after discovering his betrayal and believes that the powerful crime boss is dead. That assumption does not last: Fisk survived, and his return makes the conflict personal as well as criminal.
Maya escapes the New York underworld and heads back to her Oklahoma hometown. There, she is forced to confront the family history, Native American roots, and community relationships that existed before Fisk’s influence took over her life. Her goal initially appears to be retaliation against Fisk’s organization, but the larger question is whether she can define herself outside the role he created for her.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
That makes Echo less a conventional “hero versus villain” series than a story about control, grief, belonging, and inherited loyalty. Fisk was both Maya’s guardian and the person who turned her abilities into an instrument of his power. Maya must determine which relationships are built on genuine care and which depend on fear, obligation, or manipulation.
Is Echo connected to the MCU?
Yes. The television series follows Maya’s appearance in Hawkeye and continues the MCU version of her relationship with Kingpin. Vincent D’Onofrio returns as Fisk, who is not simply a crime boss opposing a new superhero: he is Maya’s former guardian and surrogate father figure.
The show also provides the character with a setting and identity beyond New York and Fisk’s criminal empire. Its MCU connection is important, but viewers do not need to expect a large crossover plot. The season’s focus is Maya’s homecoming, family, community, and attempt to reclaim her future.
Maya Lopez and her abilities
Maya is deaf and is played by Alaqua Cox, who is Deaf. Marvel describes the character as a Cheyenne-Latin American warrior with photographic reflexes. She can reproduce physical actions she observes, including fighting techniques and performance skills.
The series treats deafness, Indigenous identity, family, community, and physical skill as integrated parts of Maya’s character. Her deafness is not merely a plot gimmick, and the story is not reducible to a disability narrative. Maya is simultaneously a fighter, a daughter, a community member, a survivor of manipulation, and a person trying to decide what kind of legacy she will leave.

Family, identity, and trauma
Family versus control
One of the season’s central ideas is the difference between biological family, chosen family, and relationships that only resemble family because one person holds power over another. Fisk’s attachment to Maya is complicated by the fact that he raised her after her father’s death while also shaping her into a weapon. The emotional conflict is therefore not solved simply by defeating him physically.
Returning home
Maya’s return to Oklahoma expands the story beyond revenge. Tamaha and its community give her access to family history and relationships that challenge the identity she developed in Fisk’s world. The community is not background decoration; it is one of the season’s main story engines.
Legacy
The series asks whether Maya must inherit Fisk’s violence and criminal identity or whether she can build a different future from her family and ancestral history. That emphasis gives the season a more intimate scale than many Marvel productions.

The official Disney+ catalog lists Echo as a single-season, five-episode series. For readers checking current access, watch Echo on Disney+ through the Disney+ service in regions where the title is offered.
All five episodes originally launched simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu in the United States. Disney’s launch materials said that Hulu availability continued through April 9, 2024. That was a historical launch arrangement, not a guarantee of current Hulu availability. How Echo connects to the comics
Maya Lopez first appeared in Daredevil (1998) #9. In Marvel’s comic history, she is a deaf Cheyenne-Latin American warrior whose father was killed by Fisk. Fisk then became her guardian and manipulated her into believing that Daredevil was responsible for her father’s death.
Maya later adopted the Ronin identity in New Avengers (2004) #11. Marvel identifies her as the first character to use that identity in its stated chronology.
Read the comic material behind Maya’s history
Echo: The Saga of Maya Lopez trade paperback is the most direct physical-reading recommendation for viewers who want to explore the character’s early comic history. Marvel says the collection includes Daredevil (1998) #9–15 and #51–55, covering important material involving Maya, Fisk, Daredevil, her father’s death, revenge, and her attempt to rebuild her life.
This is a collection of comic stories, not a novelization of the television season and not an episode-by-episode adaptation. The MCU series borrows character foundations and themes while developing its own continuity.

Merchandise and collecting
Marvel’s documented series merchandise includes Funko’s Echo Fighting Stance figure and a Kingpin with Eyepatch figure. These may appeal to collectors, but current stock, product identifiers, prices, and retailer listings should be verified before purchase. They are optional merchandise rather than necessary context for understanding the season.
Who is Echo for?
- Marvel viewers who want to follow the continuation of Maya and Fisk’s story after Hawkeye.
- Crime-drama fans who prefer a smaller-scale conflict involving criminal power, family loyalty, and revenge.
- Viewers interested in character-driven superhero stories rather than constant universe-wide spectacle.
- Comic readers who want a starting point for Maya Lopez’s earlier history.
It may be a less suitable choice for someone expecting a traditional team-up series or a season dominated by crossover cameos. Its emphasis is Maya’s personal conflict and the community she returns to.
Bottom line
Echo Season 1 works best as Maya Lopez’s transition from Fisk’s weapon and New York operative toward a more self-defined identity rooted in family, community, and legacy. The five-episode binge format keeps the story compact, while the return of Kingpin supplies the MCU continuity. Its strongest material is not the question of who is more powerful, but whether Maya can separate genuine love from the control that has shaped her life.

Echo is a compact, grounded Marvel story about Maya Lopez reclaiming her identity from Kingpin’s influence. Watch it as a five-episode continuation of Hawkeye, but approach it primarily as a crime-and-family drama centered on belonging, trauma, Indigenous identity, deaf representation, and legacy.
