Dune, the Broadway Musical and 8 Other Brain-Dead Songs From Udio’s AI Music Generator

“Dune, the Broadway Musical” was not a real stage production. It was a short, unofficial Udio-generated concept track featured in a satirical Gizmodo slideshow published on April 11, 2024, alongside eight other strange early AI songs. The piece captured a moment when text-to-music systems were exciting enough to impress people—and unreliable enough to become internet jokes.

More than two years later, the slideshow is best read as a historical snapshot of early generative music, not a current review of Udio. The service has since entered licensing agreements, changed its credit structure, and disabled downloads.

What the Gizmodo article actually was

Lucas Ropek’s article, “Dune, the Broadway Musical and 8 Other Brain-Dead Songs From Udio’s AI Music Generator,” appeared in Gizmodo’s Artificial Intelligence section on April 11, 2024.

It was a 10-page image-and-audio slideshow built around nine user-created Udio tracks: the Dune concept and eight additional songs. The headline’s “brain-dead” language was Gizmodo’s deliberately provocative editorial judgment, not an objective musical category.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

The article appeared just after Udio entered public beta. At the time, the service was attracting attention for generating songs from written prompts that could specify subject matter, lyrics, genre, instrumentation, and vocal direction. Gizmodo emphasized the system’s rough edges: many examples were under a minute, and the service was reportedly over capacity for new generations when the article was viewed.

That combination—ambitious prompts, uncanny vocals, abrupt arrangements, and unfinished-feeling results—made Udio an easy target for satire. It also illustrated an important limitation of early text-to-music systems: a clever premise did not guarantee a coherent or satisfying song.

The documented songs

The original slideshow’s individual pages are the reliable source for its entries. The accessible research confirms the first two pages below; the remaining eight titles should not be reconstructed from memory or secondary summaries.

Entry Original page What is documented Current availability
“Dune, the broadway musical” Gizmodo page 2 An unofficial concept imagining Frank Herbert’s science-fiction world as a Broadway musical, styled as Dune “by way of Oklahoma!” Gizmodo said the idea was better than the resulting song. The old Udio embed may no longer play. Udio’s current policy says downloads are disabled.
“you spilt a coffee on my dog” Gizmodo page 3 A deliberately absurd song title. Gizmodo called the subject self-explanatory and compared its style to something Macy Gray might perform. Availability must be checked on the original Udio page; the historical embed should not be assumed to remain active.
Eight further entries Gizmodo pages 4–10 The slideshow title confirms eight additional tracks, but their complete titles and descriptions are not reliably exposed in the supplied source material. Check each original page individually. Do not assume the tracks or downloads remain available.

This distinction matters. A broken embed does not prove that a track was never published, while a surviving page does not guarantee that the audio, metadata, or download options are unchanged from 2024.

Why “Dune, the Broadway Musical” was the memorable example

The joke works because it collides two very different cultural forms. Dune suggests political intrigue, desert warfare, prophecy, and immense science-fiction spectacle. Oklahoma! suggests classic musical-theater storytelling, song-driven character development, and a distinctly traditional stage idiom.

That contrast makes the prompt funny before any audio exists. But a funny prompt is not the same thing as a successful composition. The generated result had to maintain a narrative, write usable lyrics, develop musical ideas, and make the vocal performance fit the premise. Gizmodo’s point was that the concept was more compelling than the execution.

It was also not an authorized Broadway production, a Warner Bros. or Dune franchise release, or evidence that the rights holders approved the experiment. The existence of an AI-generated parody concept does not establish permission to commercially exploit the property.

What early Udio could—and could not—do

Udio represented an early generation of text-to-music services. A user could describe a desired song in natural language and receive a short audio generation rather than manually recording instruments or programming every musical part.

Amazon Echo Dot Max (newest model), Alexa speaker with room-filling sound and nearly 3x bass, Great for living rooms and medium-sized spaces, Designed for Alexa+, Glacier White
  • Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
  • Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering: With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

The novelty was substantial: the system could produce recognizable song structures, vocals, instrumentation, and genre cues from a prompt. The weaknesses were equally visible:

  • Lyrics could be weak or nonsensical. A prompt’s subject did not ensure a meaningful narrative.
  • Arrangements could feel abrupt. Short generations often sounded like sketches rather than finished tracks.
  • Vocals could be synthetic or uncanny. Realistic timbre did not necessarily produce convincing phrasing or emotion.
  • Ambition and execution could diverge. A grand idea such as a science-fiction musical could collapse into a small, incoherent audio clip.
  • Selection shaped perception. Gizmodo chose bizarre examples for entertainment. They should not be treated as a representative benchmark of every Udio generation.

That last point is important. The slideshow demonstrates that early Udio could produce funny failures. It does not prove that all AI-generated music was bad, nor does it establish a consistent standard for judging musical quality.

The larger 2024 AI-music moment

Udio launched during a rapid expansion of text-to-music tools, alongside services such as Suno and Stable Audio. Early coverage focused on increasingly realistic vocals and audio quality, while musicians and critics raised questions about training data, artist consent, authorship, and whether the technology would supplement or replace human creators.

The Gizmodo slideshow captured the cultural reaction in miniature: fascination with the premise, amusement at the failures, and skepticism toward claims that generative systems were about to automate artistic creation. Its jokes were sharper than its analysis, but that was part of the article’s format and tone.

From novelty demo to licensing controversy

Udio’s context changed substantially after the slideshow:

  • April 11, 2024: Gizmodo published the slideshow while Udio was newly available in public beta.
  • June 2024: Major record labels sued Udio and Suno over alleged unauthorized use of copyrighted sound recordings. Those claims should be described as legal allegations, not as a final judicial finding.
  • October 29, 2025: Universal Music Group and Udio announced a settlement and plans for a licensed AI music-creation platform using authorized music.
  • November 19, 2025: Udio announced a licensing arrangement with Warner Music Group, describing plans for a next-generation service involving features such as remixes, covers, and participating artists’ voices and styles.
  • February 17, 2026: Udio said downloads of audio, video, and stems had been disabled in connection with the UMG partnership. The same update described increased monthly credit limits and a one-time grant of additional non-expiring credits for subscribers.

These developments change how the old article should be understood. The tracks were once presented as disposable internet oddities from a new creative service. Udio is now part of a more complicated story involving licensing, platform design, artist participation, copyright disputes, and limits on what users can export.

What Udio’s current limits mean for readers

Readers interested in experimenting with Udio should consult its current pricing page and account-creation instructions, rather than relying on 2024 descriptions or older price examples.

Official support material currently describes free accounts as receiving 10 daily credits plus an additional monthly limit of 100 credits. It says two approximately 32-second songs cost two credits, while two approximately 130-second songs cost four credits. The same documentation lists up to 2,400 monthly credits for Standard subscriptions and up to 6,000 for Pro subscriptions. Purchased à-la-carte credits do not expire, while subscription credits do not roll over.

  • 3500 mAh Rechargeable & Compact and Portable:The speaker can charge your phone while listening to music or watching movies. bluetooth speaker with stand is small and portable, very suitable for outdoor, party, travel, etc

Those figures are product details, not a recommendation to subscribe. The most important practical restriction is that Udio’s February 2026 update says audio, video, and stem downloads are disabled. That makes the service a poor fit for anyone who requires a dependable export workflow, editable stems, or clear commercial-distribution options.

Older support pages contain price examples such as $10 per month for Standard and $30 per month for Pro, while a later trial page gives a U.S. annual Standard example of $96 plus tax. Because these are dated examples and pricing can change, they should not be presented as confirmed current prices.

Can you still hear the songs?

Possibly, but availability should be checked entry by entry. The Gizmodo article may remain online even when an embedded Udio track has been deleted, altered, restricted, or made inaccessible. Udio’s current download restriction also means that readers should not be told they can export the historical tracks.

The safest description is therefore: the slideshow documents the tracks as they appeared in April 2024, while their present-day playback and metadata require individual verification. The two documented pages are the “Dune” entry and the “you spilt a coffee on my dog” entry.

Why the slideshow still matters

The article is not valuable because it proves that AI music was universally poor. It is valuable because it records an early stage of the technology’s public reception, when a system could generate enough recognizable music to make its failures funny, but not always enough consistency to make the results feel finished.

“Dune, the Broadway Musical” remains a useful example of the gap between conceptual novelty and artistic execution. The premise is instantly legible; the output was treated as disposable entertainment. In 2026, the more consequential story is what came afterward: lawsuits, licensing agreements, changing platform rules, and a growing need to distinguish an amusing AI experiment from a legally and commercially usable musical work.
