Dune: Prophecy is most compelling when it explores how the Bene Gesserit learned to turn influence into power. Set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides, this six-episode prequel follows Harkonnen sisters Valya and Tula as they help shape the Sisterhood and maneuver around the imperial throne. It favors political strategy, lore and conversation over the large-scale action of the films—a choice that gives the series its focus, but also contributes to the complaints about its pace and crowded storytelling.
What is Dune: Prophecy about?
The series follows Valya and Tula Harkonnen as they face threats to humanity and establish the order that will become the Bene Gesserit. Its story takes place 10,000 years before Paul Atreides, shifting the focus from the familiar film-era struggle over Arrakis to the origins and political reach of the Sisterhood.
HBO described the series as inspired by Sisterhood of Dune, the novel by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. “Inspired by” is the right expectation: the available information establishes that connection, but not a scene-by-scene or otherwise faithful adaptation of the book.
The first season has six episodes. Its broad arc centers on Valya’s effort to place a Sister near the imperial throne and Tula’s work within the order as succession politics, conspiracies and threats put its ambitions under pressure. The principal adult leads are Emily Watson as Valya and Olivia Williams as Tula; Travis Fimmel plays Desmond Hart. Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea and Jade Anouka are among the supporting cast.

What kind of Dune story is it?
Political strategy over action spectacle
Dune: Prophecy is built around maneuvering: who can influence the imperial court, how the Sisterhood might secure a lasting role in power, and what its members will risk to get there. Viewers expecting the films’ sweeping battles and action set pieces may find this a much more talk-driven experience. Intrigue and exposition are the main event, not a bridge between spectacles.

The Sisterhood before the familiar Bene Gesserit
The prequel’s most distinctive appeal is seeing the order at an earlier point in its history, before the Bene Gesserit most viewers know from the films. That makes its institutional origins—not simply the presence of familiar lore—the reason to tune in. The series gives its central political question a Dune-specific shape: how a group without an imperial throne of its own can still try to influence who rules.
A demanding ensemble and a lot of lore
The story spans competing interests and a sizable cast. That scale can make the political world feel consequential, but it asks viewers to keep track of names, houses and shifting allegiances. If you enjoy piecing together elaborate schemes, the density may be part of the appeal; if you want a clear, tightly focused story, it may feel like a barrier.

What do critics say about the performances, pace and world?
Two pre-premiere reviews identify a similar split between the series’ craft and its storytelling. TVLine’s Dave Nemetz says it looks and feels like Dune, praising the sets, costumes and sturdy lead performances. He also finds the story dense and cerebral, with a stately, talk-heavy rhythm, and says its political plotting sits too close to Game of Thrones for his taste. His review covers the first four episodes rather than the whole season.
TV Insider’s Matt Roush calls it a “handsome but lumbering production.” He singles out Watson’s performance while arguing that the large ensemble does not give its characters the vividness of the schemers and heroes in Westeros. These are critical judgments, not facts about how every viewer will respond. Taken together, they point to the central trade-off: production design and a strong lead can make the world persuasive even when pace and character definition do not satisfy everyone.

How has the series been received?
Rotten Tomatoes’ live page showed a 64% Tomatometer from 78 reviews and a 63% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 ratings when checked on October 8, 2026. Both figures can change as reviews and audience ratings are added; they are a dated snapshot, not a permanent verdict. The split between critical reservations and the show’s evident appeal to some viewers is consistent with a series whose lore and production may be a better fit for some Dune fans than its pacing is for others.

It is a reasonable choice if you are especially interested in the Bene Gesserit, enjoy court politics and can settle into a deliberate, lore-heavy story. The focus on the Sisterhood’s origins gives the prequel a clear purpose beyond returning to a familiar franchise setting.

It is a less obvious fit if you mainly want the films’ action scale, a brisk plot or a small cast whose motivations are easy to follow. The best decision is to weigh what you want from Dune: institutional history and political maneuvering, or spectacle and momentum. Critical responses suggest the performances and visual world may help carry the former, but they do not erase the concerns about density and pace.
Where to watch
For viewers in the United States, Rotten Tomatoes listed HBO Max subscription viewing and Fandango purchase options when checked. Availability can vary by country and change over time, so confirm the current listing in your territory before subscribing or buying. Apple TV’s catalog page lists the series and its six episodes, but that listing alone does not establish a streaming-subscription option.
What to read or listen to next
Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson is the book HBO identified as the series’ inspiration. It offers a route into the same broad subject, but the connection should not be taken as proof that the show closely follows the novel’s events.
The official companion podcast features interviews with showrunner Alison Schapker, writers, actors and crew, alongside episode discussions. It is a useful supplement for viewers who want more context on the people and choices behind the series.
