Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 has the scale of a Western epic and the shape of a very long opening chapter. Kevin Costner cuts among settlers, soldiers, Apache characters and outlaws, but the constant resets and a finale aimed squarely at what comes next make this first film feel more like a promise than a satisfying story in its own right.
What story is Horizon telling?
Costner’s 2024 Western is not built around one central hero. Its strands include the Kittredge family’s journey toward the settlement of Horizon in Arizona’s San Pedro Valley, U.S. cavalry personnel, Apache characters defending their land and community, and Lucy and Sykes, whose story involves an outlaw-family pursuit. The intended effect is a broad view of western expansion; the practical effect is that the film repeatedly asks viewers to leave one set of characters and start following another.
That structure is the film’s defining gamble. A panorama can make a place and its conflicts feel larger than any single character. Here, however, the transitions often arrive before a strand has gathered much momentum. The story keeps opening doors without spending enough time in each room for the people inside to become equally compelling.
Does the scale create an epic—or a scattered film?
There is genuine ambition in the reach of the project: different communities and institutions encounter the same expanding frontier, rather than being folded into one protagonist’s adventure. Yet breadth alone does not create depth. The film’s multiple plots compete for attention, and their movement between settlers, military figures, Apache characters and outlaws can make the whole feel like a collection of beginnings rather than a drama steadily building toward a central conflict.

David Fear’s Rolling Stone review, syndicated by Yahoo, argues that the strands keep resetting before they cohere and calls the result a supersized pilot. Bob Strauss’s San Francisco Chronicle review also describes the storytelling as scattered. Those are critics’ assessments, not a claim about what every viewer will feel, but they point to a concrete problem: the film’s structure often makes setup more conspicuous than development.
Is Chapter 1 satisfying on its own?
Not especially. The film introduces a large cast and several conflicts, but it does not give all of them enough room to reach a meaningful stopping point. Its ending turns forward, using a montage of scenes from what is to come rather than delivering the sense of closure many viewers expect after a feature-length installment. The result can feel less like a first chapter with its own arc than an invitation to wait for the next one.

That is also the strongest defense of the film’s form: Costner meant it to be one part of a larger undertaking, not a self-contained Western with every thread neatly resolved. In an Associated Press interview at Cannes published May 19, 2024, he said the project might comprise four films and that scripts for parts three and four were ready. He also described the material’s possible future as film and television: “After four of these, they’re going to have 13, 14 hours of film and they’re going to turn into 25 hours of TV, and they’re going to do whatever they’re going to do.” That was Costner’s stated plan and outlook at the time, not confirmation that every proposed chapter would be completed or released.
Knowing the intention explains why the movie points beyond itself; it does not automatically make the viewing experience work. A chapter can defer answers and still provide a satisfying arc, a decisive change in its characters, or a clear dramatic payoff. Chapter 1 offers comparatively little of that, so its serial design feels like a reason for the incompleteness, not a cure for it.

Whose frontier gets the most attention?
The film’s multiple perspectives do not receive equal weight. Fear’s review criticizes the limited development of Apache characters relative to the settler and military narratives, arguing that this imbalance risks repeating familiar Western conventions. That criticism is worth considering alongside the film’s stated breadth: including Indigenous characters is not the same as giving them comparable narrative attention, interiority or agency.
The distinction matters because the Apache characters are presented as defending their land and community, while much of the film’s time is spent following people moving into or operating within that contested territory. The resulting perspective can make the frontier feel broad in cast but narrower in whose experiences drive the drama. This is a critical judgment about the film’s allocation of focus, not a claim that one review settles the wider historical discussion.

Does the three-hour runtime earn its length?
The San Francisco Chronicle lists the film at 181 minutes. The British Board of Film Classification records a 2024 UK version at 181 minutes 13 seconds; exact runtime may vary slightly by cut or territory, so consult the local distributor’s listing if timing matters (BBFC catalogue entry).
At roughly three hours, the length could have given the ensemble room to gather force. Instead, because the film keeps changing its focus and leaves so much unresolved, the introductions can feel like delays before a story that has not yet arrived. Viewers drawn to patient, open-ended world-building may value the time spent establishing the saga’s many threads; those looking for a firm dramatic line or a complete chapter are more likely to feel the drift.

Verdict: is Horizon: Chapter 1 worth watching?
It is worth considering for viewers who enjoy expansive Westerns, ensemble storytelling and the prospect of following a story across installments. Costner’s ambition is evident in the scale and the number of lives he wants to place on the same frontier. But ambition and narrative satisfaction are not interchangeable: the frequent shifts dilute momentum, the balance of perspective is debatable, and the ending emphasizes future material over this film’s own resolution.
For viewers seeking a Western that stands firmly on its own, Chapter 1 is a frustrating recommendation. It has enough world-building to suggest a larger saga, but not enough closure or sustained character development to make this installment feel complete.
