Spoilers for “Hell Week,” Gen V Season 2, Episode 7. The penultimate episode turns Marie’s healing power into the key to its most unsettling reveal: the burned man she saves is Thomas Godolkin, the force behind Cipher. His return to campus revives the season’s threat of a purge and leaves the finale with an urgent question: who can stop him?
What happens in “Hell Week”?
“Hell Week” picks up after Marie and Cate leave Stan Edgar’s bunker. Their uneasy partnership is already fragile: Cate wants Marie to restore her powers, but Marie does not trust her enough to do it. Elsewhere, Annabeth has a disturbing vision of Marie dead. The others try to reach her as the group’s separate paths begin drawing them back toward Godolkin University.
Marie and Cate head toward Cipher’s home, while the friends learn more about Cipher’s plan to cull supes he considers weak. The threat is not just political or theoretical: Cipher can control people, making the group’s attempt to fight back a direct confrontation with his power.
How does the group resist Cipher?
Polarity is able to resist Cipher’s mind control, offering the group a way to push back. But using his powers harms him, so resistance comes at a personal cost. Marie heals him, restoring his ability to fight.

The friends converge on Godolkin and split up. The episode runs two urgent pursuits in parallel: some characters face Cipher’s mind control, while Marie searches for the captive burned man. That division keeps the action moving toward the same destination without losing sight of Marie’s particular role in what follows.
Who is Cipher?
The name “Cipher” is a role as much as an identity. The person presented as Dean Cipher is a controlled host; Ready Steady Cut identifies that host as Doug Brightbill. The real power behind him is Thomas Godolkin, the university’s founder, who has been masking himself as Cipher.

Marie finds the burned man and heals him. The act frees Godolkin from his host—and reveals that the person she has rescued is the season’s architect of the threat. The reveal changes the meaning of the search: Marie was not simply saving a captive. By healing him, she brought the force behind Cipher back into the open.
Gen V co-creator and executive producer Eric Kripke credited the idea for the twist to the creative team: “That primarily came from [showrunner] Michele [Fazekas] and Tom Schnauz, her executive producer.” TheWrap’s interview with Kripke discusses the reveal.

What is the cliffhanger, and what did the reveal mean?
Godolkin emerges on campus and renews his plan to eliminate supes he regards as weak. The episode ends with the danger no longer hidden behind a controlled dean: the person driving the purge is loose, and the characters face an immediate threat as the season heads into its finale.
Marie’s healing is therefore both rescue and reversal. Her power saves Polarity and gives the group a chance to fight, but it also frees Godolkin. The cliffhanger grows directly out of the episode’s central choice rather than arriving as an unrelated last-minute shock.

Why “Hell Week” stands out
“The Best Episode in Weeks” is a judgment, not a measurable ranking, but “Hell Week” makes a persuasive case through the way its pieces converge. The mystery of the burned man pays off in a reveal that reframes Cipher; Polarity’s resistance and Marie’s healing give the confrontation physical and emotional stakes; and the ending turns that discovery into a clear setup for the finale.
The episode’s trade-off is familiar to ensemble storytelling: the convergence and escalating threat leave less room for individual character arcs to breathe. Its strongest material is the causal chain linking the characters’ abilities to the twist, rather than an even distribution of development across the group. As a penultimate chapter, it is effective because it answers who stands behind Cipher while leaving the characters with the harder problem of stopping him.
