What is Dune: Prophecy about?
The series follows the Sisterhood in its early years, as its members develop the abilities and influence associated with the later Bene Gesserit. HBO’s official premise describes the sisters as confronting forces that threaten humanity while establishing the order that will become the Bene Gesserit.
The story is also about how an institution gains power. The Sisterhood’s members serve as Truthsayers, but Valya Harkonnen wants its influence to reach the Imperial Throne. That ambition creates a conflict over whether the order should guide the Imperium or exert power through political and dynastic influence. This is the series’ dramatic struggle, not a claim that the later Bene Gesserit’s entire history is explained in one season.
How is Dune: Prophecy connected to Paul Atreides?
It takes place 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ ascension, according to HBO’s description. Apple TV describes the gap as 10,000 years before his birth. Those are the sources’ respective formulations; neither provides an Earth-calendar year, so the setting should not be translated into one.

The connection is chiefly historical: the show explores the origins and early reach of the Sisterhood that becomes the Bene Gesserit, an institution central to the wider Dune universe. The series’ Harkonnen family story also carries a historical grievance involving House Atreides, giving the political drama a revenge-saga dimension. That family context is discussed in TIME’s episode-one explainer and is best approached as part of the show’s story rather than as a complete account of later events.
Who are Valya and Tula Harkonnen?
- Valya Harkonnen is a central figure in the Sisterhood whose ambition is to extend the order’s power to the Imperial Throne. Adult Valya is played by Emily Watson.
- Tula Harkonnen is Valya’s sister and another central figure in the order’s story. Adult Tula is played by Olivia Williams.
Their shared family identity links the show’s institutional drama to the larger history of House Harkonnen. The series’ focus, however, is on the sisters and the Sisterhood’s rise—not on Paul Atreides, who belongs to a much later era.

Is Dune: Prophecy based on a book?
The series is inspired by Sisterhood of Dune, a novel by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. TIME identifies it as the first book in their Great Schools of Dune prequel trilogy and reports that it was published in 2012.
“Inspired by” is the precise relationship established by the available descriptions. They do not establish that the television season is a direct, episode-by-episode adaptation of the novel. The book is a related prequel read, not a guaranteed scene-by-scene guide to the show.

How many episodes are in season 1?
Season one has six episodes. HBO/Warner Bros. Discovery announced the six-episode season, and Hulu and Apple TV also list six episodes. The season premiered on November 17, 2024.
Will there be a season 2?
Yes. HBO announced that production began on an eight-episode second season, with Alison Schapker as showrunner. The announcement does not give a release date, so no premiere date is confirmed by that announcement.
