Photographs taken between 2023 and 2025 appear to show Donald Trump’s iPhone displaying a picture of Trump himself: a 2019 image of him pointing straight at the camera. The evidence is persuasive, but it comes from photographs of a phone—not a public confirmation from Trump—and does not establish whether he still uses the image today.
What the viral phone image shows
The image appears to be a lock-screen wallpaper: Trump in a dark suit and red tie, looking toward the camera and pointing forward. It matches a photograph made by Getty Images photographer Chip Somodevilla on July 19, 2019, as Trump left the White House for New Jersey. Getty’s caption, as reported by Gizmodo, says he was traveling to a fundraising dinner and a weekend at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.
It is a posed-looking moment, but it was an editorial photograph—not a selfie. Some commentators have compared the direct-pointing pose to the visual language of the “Uncle Sam Wants You” recruiting poster. That is an interpretation of the image, not an established explanation for why it may have been selected as wallpaper.

Why the story resurfaced in 2025
A photograph taken on May 30, 2025, showed Trump holding his phone as he disembarked from Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews after a trip to Pennsylvania to visit a U.S. Steel plant. The image, listed by Getty Images, brought renewed attention to the apparent wallpaper. Coverage described the phone as also showing a text-message notification associated with Roger Stone, though the screen is photographed at a distance and not every detail should be treated as independently legible.

On May 31, conservative commentator Benny Johnson posted the image with the caption “President Trump’s lock screen.” It circulated widely again in late May and early June. The phone photograph was not the first time the picture had been spotted: a late-2023 video reportedly showed the same image, and photographs circulated in October 2024 made it easier to compare the screen with the original portrait. Gizmodo published its report on October 22, 2024, before the later viral revival.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
There are three different levels of certainty here. In the photographs, a phone associated with Trump appears to display an image of Trump. Comparing that small screen image with Somodevilla’s 2019 photograph strongly supports the identification. But the photographs do not reveal who set the wallpaper, why it was chosen, whether Trump has used it continuously, or whether it remains on his phone now.

“Wallpaper” is the safest general description. The 2025 image appears consistent with a lock screen, and reports commonly call it one, but a distant photograph is not a reliable way to establish every detail of the phone interface. It is also more precise to say a photographed phone appears to show the picture than to claim that every phone Trump owns has the same setting.

Critics online read the self-portrait as vanity or narcissism; supporters saw a striking, memorable image that fit Trump’s public persona. Those are political and cultural reactions, not clinical findings. Trump has not publicly explained the choice in the evidence available here.

A small image with a big political meaning
A phone wallpaper is an ordinary personal detail, which helps explain why the image attracted such disproportionate attention. People often expect to see family, friends, pets, or a landscape on a personal screen. A forceful portrait of a president pointing directly at the viewer is more unusual—and, for a public figure whose brand has long centered on his own name and image, immediately legible as a symbol.
That symbolism is what made the story travel. The same picture could look self-aggrandizing to a critic and confident or amusing to a supporter. The evidence tells us what the phone seems to display; it cannot settle what the choice means to Trump.

As of the latest evidence covered here, the image was documented repeatedly through 2025. There is no reliable confirmation that Trump still uses it in 2026.
