Yes. If Streamlabs Desktop is sending your live video to YouTube, it needs to stay open and connected for the broadcast to continue. You can close the separate YouTube Live Control Panel window; it is a dashboard, not the encoder.
Why Streamlabs Desktop needs to stay open
YouTube describes encoder streaming as software or hardware converting and sending content to YouTube. In this workflow, Streamlabs Desktop is the local software encoder: it sends the feed using the YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions say to end the broadcast by stopping content from the encoder. Closing the app that is sending the feed therefore stops that local contribution to the stream.
This answer applies YouTube’s general encoder workflow to Streamlabs Desktop; YouTube’s guidance cited here does not document Streamlabs-specific shutdown, crash, or reconnection behavior. YouTube does not establish that its cloud service keeps a locally encoded feed going after the encoder app exits.
What you can close—and what you should keep running
- Keep Streamlabs Desktop open: while it is the active encoder sending your feed, leave it running and streaming.
- You can close the YouTube Live Control Panel: YouTube describes this as a compact version of Live Control Room. Closing that separate dashboard window is not the same as closing the encoder.
How to end the broadcast safely
- When your event is over, end the stream on YouTube as applicable to your broadcast.
- Stop sending content from Streamlabs Desktop after the event has stopped on YouTube. YouTube’s streaming tips say: “After your event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder.”
While live, YouTube recommends monitoring the stream’s audio and video quality.

Keep a separate recording if the stream matters
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but recommends making a local archive as a backup. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Archiving is separate from the encoder requirement: a YouTube archive does not mean Streamlabs Desktop can be closed while it is sending the live feed.
