Sometimes—but pre-encoding prerecorded videos does not, by itself, make a 24/7 YouTube stream cheaper. It can shift encoding work off a computer during the broadcast, but something must still play and send a continuous live signal, and YouTube still transcodes that signal for viewers. Whether the total cost falls depends on what your current setup charges for: local power and equipment, active stream time, storage, delivery, or a service subscription.
What pre-encoding changes—and what it does not
Pre-encoding means preparing prerecorded source files before broadcasting. That can reduce the real-time processing your own computer must do if it would otherwise encode the footage while streaming. But the prepared files still need to be played and sent to YouTube continuously for the live broadcast to stay online.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live input into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Preparing source files in advance does not eliminate that downstream YouTube work. YouTube’s live encoder guidance describes the platform’s live-stream requirements and processing.
When can pre-encoding reduce the bill?
Streaming from a local computer
Advance encoding may lower the computer’s workload during the broadcast, depending on the source files and playback setup. It does not turn off the machine or remove the need for a reliable internet connection: the computer or another device still has to play and upload continuously. The available published figures do not establish a general electricity or hardware saving for a particular PC, so measure your own incremental power use rather than assume a percentage.

Using a hosted encoder or streaming service
Pre-encoding may not reduce a provider’s charge if the plan bills for active channel time or a recurring subscription. Other providers may charge for storage, configured outputs, bandwidth, or video delivered. Check the billing unit before treating encoding as the main cost.
Serving viewers
Audience delivery is a separate cost from preparing files. In a hosted setup that bills for delivery, the number of viewers and viewing time can matter more than the one-time work of encoding a source video. Keep delivery assumptions constant when comparing workflows.

What published cloud prices do—and do not—show
These examples illustrate different billing models; neither measures savings from pre-encoding a 24/7 YouTube stream.
| Provider and published example | What the figure covers | Why it is not a pre-encoding savings estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Web Services (AWS): approximately $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with about 1,000 viewers, including $2.50 for live encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution. | AWS’s example for US East (N. Virginia), using its stated assumptions. AWS says the estimate is likely higher than actual costs and depends on the factors described on its page. | It is an AWS example, not a YouTube-specific calculation or a comparison between pre-encoded and live-encoded source video. See AWS’s pricing assumptions. |
| Cloudflare Stream: $5 per 1,000 minutes of stored video capacity and $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered. | Cloudflare’s pricing page, last updated September 8, 2026, says ingress and encoding are free and bandwidth is included in delivered-video pricing. | It illustrates storage and delivery-based billing, not a measured saving for a YouTube live-stream workflow. Confirm current terms on Cloudflare’s pricing page. |
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is another example of a different billing basis: its charges depend on active channel time and configured resolutions. That means preparing a file ahead of time does not necessarily change the billable channel hours or outputs. See Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing for its service-specific terms.

How to make a fair cost comparison
- Hold the broadcast constant. Compare the same stream duration, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and expected audience. A 24/7 stream is 168 active hours per week; use the actual period you plan to compare.
- List every recurring or incremental charge. For a local setup, include electricity and any equipment you buy or maintain. For a hosted setup, check active-channel hours, configured outputs, storage, delivery, bandwidth, and subscription fees.
- Separate preparation from transmission. Count pre-encoding as source preparation. Separately account for the continuous playback and outgoing live signal, plus any service-side processing and viewer delivery that apply.
- Include operator time and recovery needs. A local setup may cost less in fees but requires a device and connection to stay running and someone to maintain them. A hosted service may charge for convenience; compare its actual terms rather than assuming it is cheaper.
- Use provider calculators or current pricing pages. Prices and supported settings can change. Estimate each workflow using the provider’s own current billing units and the same stream and audience assumptions.
Ways to automate prerecorded playback
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. The same YouTube guidance lists cloud tools for 24/7 prerecorded streaming, including Gyre. These are ways to automate playback and ingest, not evidence that buying hardware or subscribing to a service will save money for a particular channel. Check current product capabilities and terms before choosing an approach.
