You can run a YouTube channel continuously with an encoder or a cloud streaming service, but a livestream alone does not add a donation button. To collect donations through YouTube Giving, your channel and the beneficiary charity must each qualify, and you must attach the scheduled livestream to a published fundraiser. Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit: a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be saved, so keep a separate local recording if the replay matters.
Check that your channel and nonprofit qualify for YouTube Giving
There are two separate eligibility checks: one for your channel to create a fundraiser and another for the nonprofit to receive donations. Confirm both before buying equipment or announcing the fundraiser.
Channel requirements
YouTube’s published requirements for creators setting up a YouTube Giving fundraiser include:
- The channel is based in a location where YouTube Giving is available.
- The channel has at least 10,000 subscribers.
- The channel is in the YouTube Partner Program.
- The channel is not designated as made for kids.
YouTube notes that some channels may have access outside these criteria. Check whether the feature appears in your own YouTube Studio account under Earn > Giving; do not assume that eligibility follows from the charity’s location alone. Availability can vary by country or region.

Beneficiary requirements
The nonprofit must also be selectable and eligible. YouTube’s nonprofit guidance describes eligible recipients as U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) public charities that are requested by a creator, opt into online fundraising via GuideStar, and meet Google for Nonprofits and YouTube policy requirements. These are requirements for the intended beneficiary, not substitutes for the channel requirements. If the organization is missing from the selection tool, YouTube says a request may take up to five business days to review.

Choose how to keep the livestream running
YouTube Live accepts streams from software and hardware encoders. A software encoder can suit a modest production; dedicated hardware may make sense when production complexity, reliability needs, or separation from a staff computer justifies it. For prerecorded programming intended to run continuously, a cloud service can remove the need to leave a local computer on. Compare options by their YouTube compatibility, recovery and monitoring arrangements, playlist and rights controls, operating workload, support, and current terms and price.

YouTube’s verified-encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud tool for continuous 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That listing is not an endorsement or an uptime guarantee; verify any service’s current capabilities, pricing, terms, rights workflow, and availability before choosing it.
YouTube’s encoder guide explains the encoder workflow. Keep your stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
Activate live streaming and connect the encoder
First-time setup can take up to 24 hours, so activate the feature well before the planned launch. YouTube also requires channel verification and no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days before a channel can livestream. Review the current steps in YouTube’s live-streaming guide.

- Verify the channel and check access. Sign in to the channel, complete verification if needed, and confirm live streaming is available. Do not wait until broadcast day for first-time activation.
- Create or schedule the stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one for the intended broadcast. Configure its title, description, visibility, and other details before launch.
- Connect the encoder. In the encoder workflow, copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. Use the encoder’s preview or YouTube’s preview before starting a public broadcast.
- Test privately or unlisted. Check video, audio, playback on a phone, and the public-facing watch page before promoting the event. Test backup encoder failover if you have configured it.
- Protect access. Limit access to the stream key and channel account to the staff who need it. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before resuming.
Bandwidth and stream quality
Test the actual encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio settings you plan to use. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate, accounting for primary and backup streams where applicable. Its guidance says: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” This is headroom advice, not a guarantee that a connection will stay stable.
Use the encoder’s supported settings and the stream configuration shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming one bitrate or resolution fits every source and connection. Watch the preview for dropped frames, audio sync, and image quality; test again when the network or production setup changes.

Create the fundraiser and attach the scheduled livestream
Simply going live does not activate YouTube Giving. Create and publish a fundraiser, then add the scheduled live stream to it.

- In YouTube Studio, open Earn > Giving.
- Choose Create a fundraiser.
- Select an eligible nonprofit, or request one if it is not listed.
- Add the fundraiser title and description. Set a goal, duration, and collaborators if those options suit your campaign.
- Add the scheduled livestream to the fundraiser and publish it. You can also start this process from the advanced settings in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the fundraiser is published and attached before the broadcast. The donate button appears after the fundraiser’s start date; it may not appear beforehand.

Where viewers see the donation control
When live chat is enabled, YouTube Giving’s Live Chat Donations button appears in chat. When chat is disabled, the donate button can appear next to or below the stream. Viewers can donate through the button and may choose whether to display their username in chat. The Live Control Room Viewer Activity Widget can show donations in real time.
What changes when donations are enabled
YouTube says adding a fundraiser does not affect ads. On streams using Live Chat Donations, however, Super Chat and Super Stickers are disabled, and creators cannot use members-only live chat with the donate button. Consider those trade-offs when deciding how to run chat and acknowledge supporters.

Understand how donations are handled
YouTube says it pays transaction fees so that 100% of an eligible contribution goes to the nonprofit. Google works with Network for Good to collect and distribute donations; Network for Good has legal control over donations once collected. YouTube’s FAQ says distributions are typically monthly, while totals under $10 are distributed annually. This describes YouTube’s stated payment arrangement, not a promise about tax treatment or how the charity ultimately uses the funds. Review the YouTube Giving FAQs for the platform’s current details.
Plan the 24/7 schedule, archive, and content rights
Do not rely on YouTube to save a full-day replay
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, record the program separately and retain that local copy. You can consider scheduling separate sessions shorter than 12 hours, but this is not a guarantee that every segment will archive or that a continuous broadcast will have no interruption. Clear every item in a prerecorded playlist
Before broadcasting a documentary, interview, archival clip, music track, still image, or other material, confirm the nonprofit owns it or has permission covering livestreaming and replay. A public upload or a prior screening does not by itself establish those rights. Keep the stream within YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and avoid third-party music or other material unless the organization has the necessary permissions.
Assign operational responsibility
A continuous stream still needs people and procedures behind it. Decide who will monitor the broadcast, moderate chat, review playlist changes, respond to outages, and control channel access. YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish an uptime guarantee for a 24/7 broadcast, so plan for interruptions and recovery rather than treating continuous operation as automatic.

Test and troubleshoot before launch
- The stream option is unavailable: confirm channel verification, live-stream access, and whether a restriction in the previous 90 days applies. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The fundraiser or charity is missing: check Earn > Giving, the channel’s country availability and eligibility, and whether the nonprofit meets the recipient criteria. A charity request may take up to five business days to review.
- The donate button is absent: verify that the fundraiser is published, the scheduled livestream is attached, and the fundraiser’s start date has passed. Check whether the button is in live chat or next to/below the stream based on chat settings.
- The stream stutters or drops: compare total outgoing bitrate, including backup streams, with available upload capacity; preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; and test the exact encoder settings and failover path again.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Use the separately maintained local recording if one is available; do not assume YouTube will provide a full 24-hour replay.
- Audio or video is wrong on phones: check the Live Control Room preview and test the actual watch page on mobile before public launch, not only the encoder’s local preview.
