Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNot necessarily. A CPU that runs at higher clock speeds and voltage can use more power while it is doing work, but a processor’s speed rating alone cannot tell you what a whole computer will cost to run while looping a YouTube video. Playback settings, video-decoding hardware, and the rest of the system matter. To compare two setups, measure whole-device power under the same playback conditions for the same length of time.
Why CPU speed alone does not predict the bill
A processor can draw more power in a high-performance operating state: higher frequency and voltage allow more work per unit time, but also increase energy use per unit time in that state. The Linux kernel’s CPU Performance Scaling documentation describes this relationship. It is conditional, not a rule that every faster-rated CPU uses more electricity during video playback. Processors can change operating states in response to workload.
A model’s specifications are not a measurement of a computer playing a video. Frequency, voltage, cache, and manufacturing process can affect processor energy use; TDP is a basic indication, not a reading of wall power during a particular task. Microsoft’s Windows Server hardware power considerations explains these factors. CPU utilization, CPU package power, TDP, and whole-computer power at the outlet describe different things.
What changes power use during YouTube playback
How the video is decoded
Supported video formats may be decoded by dedicated hardware rather than by general-purpose CPU cores. Intel’s Core Ultra processor datasheet describes hardware-accelerated decoding for formats including AVC, HEVC, VP9, and AV1, while noting that results depend on the processor SKU, content bitrate, and memory frequency. That capability does not establish that a particular browser, video, and computer are actually using that path. A 2021 study comparing HEVC hardware and software decoding likewise discusses how decoding method, core count, and clock frequency affect energy use; its findings are limited to its study conditions and do not provide a current universal figure for YouTube playback (Journal of Systems Architecture study).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Quality, frame rate, and playback conditions
Resolution and frame rate affect the work required to play a video, so keep them fixed when comparing computers. YouTube says playback quality can respond to connection speed, player or screen size, original upload quality, and browser format support; viewers can also select quality manually in the player. See Change the quality of your video — Computer. High-frame-rate playback is available when the source was uploaded or live streamed at a high frame rate. YouTube’s guidance covers 720p or 1080p for high frame rate and 480p or lower to force a lower frame rate (Watch videos at high frame rate (FPS) on YouTube — Computer).
Hardware acceleration is a playback-path setting, not a proven energy-saving switch. YouTube mentions turning it off as a troubleshooting step for a green-screen playback problem, not as a general way to reduce electricity use (Green screen in video player). Do not treat turning it off as an energy fix unless you measure the result on your own system.

How to compare two computers fairly
- Use the same video and browser. Choose the same prerecorded video and browser on both systems, and keep network conditions as similar as practical.
- Fix playback quality and frame rate. Select the same available resolution and frame rate rather than relying on automatic quality selection.
- Keep other conditions steady. Match screen conditions and other relevant system settings as closely as practical; use the same loop and observation duration.
- Measure wall power for the whole computer. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure the computer’s outlet draw. It will not isolate CPU-only power, but whole-device draw is the useful figure for estimating the computer’s electricity use.
- Compare the playback increment if needed. Measure idle power under comparable conditions as well as power during playback. The difference helps estimate the playback-related increment; total playback power is the relevant measure if you want the overall computer cost.
For an electricity estimate, multiply the measured average power in kilowatts by the number of hours, then multiply the resulting kilowatt-hours by your applicable electricity rate. The calculation is only as representative as the measurement period and conditions. There is no universal wattage or cost established for looping a prerecorded YouTube video.
Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing CPU labels or TDP figures: neither tells you the whole computer’s wall power during this workload. Measure the devices under playback instead.
- Comparing different playback settings: a different resolution, frame rate, video, or browser path makes it unclear whether the CPU or the playback conditions explain a difference. Standardize them and repeat the comparison.
- Assuming hardware decoding is active: a supported format and capable processor do not prove the browser is using hardware decoding. Treat the measured system result as the answer for that setup.
- Using CPU utilization as an electricity reading: utilization indicates activity, not watts at the wall. Use a whole-device power measurement for a bill estimate.
- Assuming hardware acceleration should be disabled: YouTube documents that setting for green-screen troubleshooting, not as a general energy-saving measure. Test before drawing an energy conclusion.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving a computer on: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
