Most Hulu on-demand content is already available to eligible subscribers inside Disney+, and Disney expects a more unified one-app experience later in 2026. However, Disney has not announced a final date for retiring the standalone Hulu app. Its current help-center guidance says subscribers can still use Hulu.com and the Hulu app, including for services that have not migrated to Disney+.
What Disney is actually phasing out
The change is primarily a consolidation of apps and viewing experiences—not an announced cancellation of Hulu subscriptions.
Disney announced on August 6, 2025, that it planned to fully integrate Hulu into Disney+. The company described Hulu as its global general-entertainment brand and said the project would culminate in a unified streaming experience combining Disney, Hulu, kids programming, news, and sports.
Disney executives later placed the broader one-app experience toward the end of calendar 2026. CEO Bob Iger discussed that timing during Disney’s February 2, 2026 earnings call, and CFO Hugh Johnston repeated a similar expectation at a March 2 Morgan Stanley conference. Those comments describe management’s target, not a consumer-facing launch date or a formal notice that the Hulu app will stop working.

Disney’s international branding change is a separate matter. Beginning October 8, 2025, Hulu replaced the Star tile on Disney+ in international markets. That did not establish a U.S. shutdown date for the standalone Hulu application.
Is the Hulu app shutting down?
There is no publicly confirmed shutdown date in the available official guidance.
Disney’s direction is clear: Hulu content and functionality are being brought into Disney+. But Disney’s May 19, 2026 help-center guidance says Hulu and Hulu Premium subscriptions remain available and that subscribers can continue watching through the Hulu app and website. The same guidance says Disney will continue integrating Hulu into Disney+ through the end of 2026.
A Disney spokesperson also told media in May 2026 that there were “no current plans” to sunset the Hulu app. That statement does not rule out a future retirement, but it does mean readers should not treat a rumored month or a broad “Hulu is ending” headline as an official shutdown announcement.
The most accurate description is: Disney is building a unified Disney+ and Hulu experience for later in 2026, while the company has not announced a final date for retiring the standalone Hulu app.
What Hulu subscribers can do in Disney+ now
The transition is already operating in stages. Eligible Hulu subscribers can sign in to Disney+ with the MyDisney credentials associated with their Hulu account and access most of Hulu’s on-demand library from the Disney+ app or website.

Depending on eligibility and rollout status, Disney+ may also offer profile linking. Disney says linking can bring certain Hulu account information into Disney+, including:
- Watch history
- Watchlists
- Recommendations
Disney announced the profile-linking feature initially for select bundle subscribers, with a broader rollout to bundle subscribers planned later in 2026. Availability can therefore vary by plan and account rather than appearing for every Hulu customer at the same time.
What has not fully migrated
Moving ordinary Hulu on-demand programming into Disney+ does not mean every Hulu product works there already. Disney’s help-center documentation identifies several important limitations.
| Hulu feature or plan | Current situation |
|---|---|
| Most Hulu on-demand content | Available to eligible subscribers through Hulu’s area or icon in Disney+. |
| Hulu Live TV-only plans | Not currently available through the Disney+ Hulu experience; continue using Hulu. |
| Hulu add-on content | Not currently available through Disney+; use the Hulu app or website unless Disney later adds the capability. |
| Hulu Kids Profiles and profiles for users under 18 | Not currently linkable to Disney+ under the documented process. |
This distinction matters if you use Hulu for live channels, premium add-ons, or a household profile that cannot be transferred. You may be able to watch a large portion of the Hulu library in Disney+ while still needing the Hulu app for other parts of your subscription.
What happens to Hulu subscriptions?
Nothing in the current evidence supports saying that Hulu subscriptions have been canceled or that every Hulu customer must immediately switch to Disney+.
Disney’s fiscal-2025 reporting described Hulu SVOD as available as a standalone U.S. service or as part of bundles. Its 2026 consumer guidance likewise says Hulu and Hulu Premium subscriptions remain available. The practical change is that eligible subscribers may increasingly use Disney+ as the front door to Hulu programming.

Disney has not established in the available materials that every customer will receive the same price, advertising tier, billing arrangement, or feature set after the unified experience arrives. Do not assume that a current legacy plan will automatically migrate in exactly the same form, or that prices will remain unchanged, until Disney publishes specific terms.
Disney has said standalone Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions will remain available while bundles continue to be encouraged through pricing and marketing. Those statements describe the company’s strategy; they are not a guarantee that every existing plan will remain unchanged indefinitely.
Special case: Hulu + Live TV
Hulu + Live TV should not be treated as ordinary Hulu on-demand access. Disney’s current help guidance says Hulu Live TV-only plans and Hulu add-ons are not currently available through the Hulu experience inside Disney+.
That means a subscriber may watch Hulu’s on-demand shows through Disney+ but still need Hulu for live television or an add-on channel. Keep the Hulu app installed if those features are part of your household’s plan.

Disney also completed a transaction in October 2025 combining its Hulu + Live TV business with Fubo. Hulu + Live TV and Fubo continued as separate consumer offerings, so that corporate transaction did not mean that Hulu + Live TV immediately became a feature inside Disney+.
What subscribers should do before the wider rollout
- Confirm your MyDisney login. Try signing in to Disney+ with the email address and password associated with Hulu. If you use different credentials, account linking may not work as expected.
- Check the Hulu area in Disney+. Look for the Hulu icon, tile, or content area. The exact interface can vary by device, plan, and rollout stage.
- Keep Hulu installed for now. This is especially important if you use Live TV, add-ons, or profiles that are not eligible for linking.
- Update both apps. Install available Disney+ and Hulu updates on your television, phone, tablet, streaming device, or game console before troubleshooting account access.
- Review profiles and parental controls. Hulu Kids Profiles and profiles for users under 18 may not transfer. Disney recommends using Disney+ Junior Mode, minor profiles, or parental controls for younger viewers.
- Check your device before buying anything. The transition is software- and account-based. You do not need a new television or streaming device merely because Hulu is being integrated into Disney+.
Do you need a new streaming device?
Usually, no. Disney+ supports web browsers, mobile devices, smart TVs, gaming consoles, streaming sticks, and set-top boxes. Disney’s supported-device information specifically includes Roku and Amazon Fire TV platforms.

A replacement may make sense if your television does not have a current Disney+ app, your built-in platform is no longer supported, or the existing hardware is too slow to run the service reliably. It is not a requirement of the Hulu transition.
For an older television, a Roku Streaming Stick 4K is one compatible option listed in Disney’s January 2026 Roku guidance. Disney also lists Fire TV Stick devices running Fire OS 6.0 or later as supported in its March 2026 Fire TV guidance. Before buying, check the current device requirements and the model’s operating-system support; compatibility and retail models can change.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Disney wants one Disney+ and Hulu experience
Disney has presented the unified experience as a way to make discovery easier and reduce the friction of switching between services. The company has also pointed to potential gains in personalization, engagement, churn reduction, operating efficiency, and advertising opportunities.
Those are Disney’s stated strategic objectives, not independently verified results. For viewers, the immediate trade-off is straightforward: one app may make on-demand discovery more convenient, but the migration is incomplete and some Hulu features still require Hulu itself.
What to watch for next
When Disney makes another major announcement, the most useful details will be more specific than a general “Hulu is coming to Disney+” message. Subscribers should look for:
Best Value
- Stores streaming devices and extra cable behind TV or monitor screen for a clean, organized entertainment center
- Large size and adjustable hook and loop strap accommodates a wide variety of streaming devices
- Integrated cable management tabs control extra cable and prevent cable pinching
- Easy to install to back of TV/monitor or to wall
- Includes hook and loop adhesive strips
- A precise launch date for the unified experience
- Whether and when the standalone Hulu app will be retired
- Which Hulu plans and add-ons will work inside Disney+
- How Hulu + Live TV will be handled
- Whether prices, advertising tiers, billing, or bundle terms will change
- How profiles for children and younger viewers will be migrated
- Whether watch history, watchlists, and recommendations transfer automatically or require linking
Until Disney publishes those details, retain access to both apps and rely on the account-specific instructions shown by Disney rather than an unverified shutdown rumor.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will Hulu shut down?
Disney has not announced a final date for retiring the standalone Hulu app. Disney expects a more unified Disney+ and Hulu experience later in 2026, but its current guidance says the Hulu app and website remain available.
Do I need Disney+ to watch Hulu now?
No. Hulu subscriptions remain available, and subscribers can continue using Hulu.com and the Hulu app. Eligible customers can also access most Hulu on-demand content through Disney+.
Will Hulu Live TV work inside Disney+?
Not currently under Disney’s documented guidance. Hulu Live TV-only plans and Hulu add-ons still need to be accessed through Hulu unless Disney later adds those functions to Disney+.
Will my Hulu watch history move to Disney+?
Eligible subscribers may be offered profile linking, which can bring watch history, watchlists, and recommendations into Disney+. The feature rollout and eligibility vary, and Hulu Kids Profiles and profiles for users under 18 are not currently linkable.
Do I need a new Roku or Fire TV device?
No. The Hulu integration does not require new hardware. A compatible device such as a Roku Streaming Stick 4K or a Fire TV Stick may help if your television lacks a supported Disney+ app, but it is optional.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Hulu is being folded into Disney+ in stages, and Disney is targeting a broader unified experience toward the end of 2026. But Hulu subscriptions remain available, the standalone Hulu app still works, and Disney has not announced a date for shutting it down. Keep Hulu for Live TV and add-ons, verify your MyDisney login, and avoid buying new hardware unless your current device is unsupported.
