Disney had discussed short, fan-made videos featuring a limited selection of its characters, with some clips curated for Disney+. There is no verified announcement that the feature launched or that Disney has chosen a replacement for Sora.
What Disney and OpenAI announced
On December 11, 2025, Disney announced a three-year licensing agreement with OpenAI, making it the first major content-licensing partner for Sora. The proposal would let Sora users prompt short, fan-inspired videos using a limited selection of more than 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars. Disney said selected Sora-generated videos could be made available to stream on Disney+.
The wording matters: the announcement described a selection of characters, not Disney’s entire catalog, and a curated selection of videos, not an open upload feed. It did not grant fans general permission to recreate Disney films, use any character or performer they wanted, or distribute franchise material commercially. Disney’s announcement also described a broader collaboration on new Disney+ experiences using OpenAI models and a planned $1 billion investment in OpenAI, subject to the terms announced at the time.
Would subscribers make videos inside Disney+?
That was a possibility Disney’s leadership discussed, but it was not a documented, ready-to-use feature. On February 2, 2026, CEO Bob Iger said Disney hoped to use Sora tools to let Disney+ subscribers create short-form videos and watch short-form user-generated content from others. He described videos of up to 30 seconds; that was an account of the proposed Sora format, not a published Disney+ product specification.

Disney did not publicly set a release date or explain where generation would happen: inside the Disney+ app, in Sora, or through another interface. Nor did the cited statements settle whether subscribers could use their own likenesses, original characters, dialogue, music or uploaded material. The executive remarks are evidence of an ambition, not proof that a feature had been built, tested publicly or scheduled to ship. See the February earnings-call transcript.
“Sharing” could mean different things
- Sharing through Sora: The original arrangement envisaged people generating and sharing short videos through the Sora experience.
- Streaming on Disney+: Disney said it could select and curate some Sora-made videos for the service. Its February commentary described a curated slate, and an executive later discussed incorporating Sora videos into the app.
- Publishing directly to Disney+: Iger’s comments raised the prospect of subscriber creation and user-generated viewing on the platform. They did not establish an unrestricted, TikTok-style publishing system or explain its submission and review process.
The public statements point more clearly to a Disney-controlled, curated destination than to a feed where anyone could instantly post anything. Disney’s executive commentary and a March 2 transcript discussed a future Sora-video experience; neither is evidence that subscribers received one.

Why Disney wanted short-form video
Disney executives framed the idea as a way to increase engagement and viewing, bring vertical and short-form video into Disney+, and make the service a more frequent destination for fans. The strategy also reflects how much viewing now happens through user-generated video platforms. These were management’s stated goals, not demonstrated results: no launched product or performance figures were supplied in the cited announcements.
The Sora shutdown changed the status
- December 11, 2025: Disney and OpenAI announced the licensing proposal.
- February 2, 2026: Disney discussed a curated Sora-video slate and Iger described hopes for subscriber creation and viewing.
- March 2, 2026: A Disney executive described a possible future Disney+ feature incorporating Sora videos.
- March 24, 2026: OpenAI announced it was exiting the Sora video-generation business. Disney said it respected OpenAI’s decision and would continue engaging with AI platforms while seeking to respect intellectual property and creators’ rights.
- April 26, 2026: OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences. OpenAI has said the Sora API is scheduled to be discontinued on September 24, 2026.
OpenAI’s Sora discontinuation notice distinguishes the shutdown of the web and app experiences from the later API end date. As of August 18, 2026, there is no verified evidence that the original Sora-powered Disney+ user-video plan launched or that Disney announced a replacement provider. The shutdown disrupted the original route; it does not establish that Disney has abandoned AI work altogether. Coverage of the shutdown reported Disney’s response.

What any successor would need to resolve
A licensed character list would not, by itself, solve the hard product questions. A service used by families would need rules and controls for harmful or age-inappropriate prompts, reliable review and removal processes, and a way to handle reports and appeals. It would also need to distinguish permission to use a licensed character from permission to imitate an actor’s face or voice, use copyrighted music, reproduce a scene or script, or monetize a clip elsewhere.
Other practical questions include whether clips can be downloaded, who may reuse them, how generated content is labeled, and how a family profile’s age settings apply to user-made videos. Generative video can also produce inconsistent faces, costumes and continuity; a curated service would need quality control as well as safety moderation. OpenAI described provenance measures such as C2PA metadata and visible watermarks for Sora, but that does not establish what controls Disney would have adopted for a Disney+ feature. OpenAI’s Sora safety overview explains those measures in the context of its product.

- Flagship Image Quality: Capture sharp, detailed 4K with a large 1/1.3” sensor that delivers cleaner video and excellent low-light performance. Great for streamers, meetings, and beyond.
- Professional Audio with Directional Pickup: A redesigned dual-mic system with beamforming directional pickup delivers clearer voice isolation and reduces background noise in busy environments.
- Natural Bokeh: Get a professional look by replicating a DSLR-like depth of field. Provides a realistic and natural bokeh effect, straight from Link's software suite.
- AI Tracking: Insta360 Link 2 Pro physically pans and tilts to follow your movements around the room, keeping you or your group perfectly in frame.
- Compatibility: This USB C webcam works with Windows, macOS, Chrome OS (4), or Linux (4), and is fully compatible with all major video conferencing software and live streaming platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Twitch, and more. Hardware Note: Currently not compatible with ARM-based Windows systems or Windows Hello Face Recognition.
Disney’s subscriber agreement is relevant background on restrictions involving copying, rebroadcasting and derivative works, but it should not be mistaken for the final rules of a proposed feature that was never publicly specified. A license covering selected characters would not automatically grant subscribers ownership of generated clips or broad reuse rights.
What subscribers should understand now
There is no confirmed Disney+ AI-video creation tool to use, no published launch date, and no confirmed alternative to Sora. The original story was a real corporate plan, not a launched service: Disney explored curated AI shorts and discussed letting subscribers create them, but the consumer Sora product at its center has since closed. Any future Disney feature would require a fresh announcement to establish its technology, availability, rules and scope.
