As of DigitalOcean’s published pricing and documentation checked on October 3, 2026, its smallest listed Basic Droplet starts at $4 per month and includes 500 GiB of transfer; additional Droplet outbound transfer is $0.01 per GiB. Your actual total depends on the server’s plan and runtime, what it sends, and whether you need storage beyond its local disk.
What makes up the bill?
Use this model: Droplet cost + charge for outbound transfer above the applicable team pool + optional Volumes or snapshot charges. These are separate cost components, not a universal estimate for a YouTube streaming setup. DigitalOcean’s published prices below were checked on October 3, 2026, and may change.
Droplet compute
DigitalOcean lists Basic Droplets starting at $4 per month for a plan with 512 MiB RAM, one vCPU, 10 GiB SSD, and 500 GiB of transfer. Other listed examples include $6 per month with 1,000 GiB of transfer and $12 per month with 2,000 GiB. These are plan examples, not recommendations for every streaming workload. See DigitalOcean Droplet Pricing for current availability and pricing.
The right plan depends on what the Droplet actually does. A server that only forwards an already encoded feed has a different compute workload from one that encodes, transcodes, or relays video to viewers. DigitalOcean describes its dedicated-vCPU CPU-Optimized Droplets as intended for workloads needing fast, consistent performance, including media streaming; that does not establish that every YouTube stream needs one.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Outbound transfer
DigitalOcean charges by direction: inbound transfer to Droplets is free, while additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB after the included allowance. Allowances and usage are pooled across Droplets in the same team, rather than reserved independently for each Droplet, and unused transfer does not roll over month to month. DigitalOcean says bandwidth pricing has no regional variation. Details are in its Bandwidth Billing documentation.
Persistent storage
A Droplet includes local SSD storage as part of its plan. If you need additional network-attached storage, DigitalOcean Volumes are a separate charge. Its published Volumes pricing lists 100 GiB for $10 per month, 500 GiB for $50 per month, and 1,000 GiB for $100 per month. Volume snapshots are $0.06 per GiB per month. Check the Volumes pricing page for current rates.

How a YouTube stream affects bandwidth cost
For a Droplet sending one upstream feed to YouTube, the relevant public outbound traffic is the feed from the Droplet. That is not the same traffic pattern as a Droplet that also distributes the video to viewers: viewer delivery can add outbound traffic. The precise bill cannot be inferred from “streaming to YouTube” alone. The available DigitalOcean pricing information does not establish a YouTube-specific bitrate, ingest requirement, or typical viewer pattern, so do not treat any one bandwidth total as universal.
DigitalOcean transfer allowance is team-wide. A Droplet’s outbound usage can be offset by transfer allowance contributed by other Droplets in that team; once the applicable pool is exceeded, additional Droplet outbound transfer is charged at the published per-GiB rate. The allowance accrues while Droplets exist. This means a calculation based only on one Droplet’s plan may misstate the team’s excess transfer charge.

Estimate your setup instead of using a universal total
Collect these inputs before estimating a month’s bill. For the traffic estimate, use the actual encoded bitrate and hours sent, and count all public egress from every Droplet in the team. If the server also serves viewers, include that traffic separately; do not assume it is covered by the upstream-feed estimate.
- Identify the Droplet plan and runtime. Record its current price and included transfer, and whether it runs for the full billing period or only part of it.
- Describe the traffic topology. Establish whether the Droplet sends only an upstream feed to YouTube or also distributes the stream to viewers.
- Estimate encoded traffic. Use your actual bitrate and streaming hours to estimate the feed’s data volume. Add any other public outbound traffic generated by the Droplet.
- Calculate team-wide outbound usage. Include public egress from the team’s other Droplets and compare total usage with the team’s applicable pooled allowance.
- Apply the excess-transfer rate. Only outbound usage beyond that allowance incurs the additional-transfer charge described in DigitalOcean’s billing documentation.
- Add storage charges if needed. Include provisioned Volumes and snapshots. Do not count local SSD as a separate Volume charge.
The result is an estimate, not a fixed streaming tariff. Your configuration, traffic, and storage choices determine it.

Local disk, Volumes, and Spaces
Use the Droplet’s included local SSD for data that fits the plan and does not require a separate persistent volume. DigitalOcean describes Volumes as additional storage for application data. Spaces can be an option for offloading files and metadata, but it does not automatically eliminate Droplet egress charges: DigitalOcean’s Spaces documentation says traffic from a Droplet to Spaces currently counts against the Droplet’s outbound transfer allowance. See Spaces pricing and transfer details.
Ways to keep a YouTube stream running
- StreamNeo — cloud playback, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day free. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. - Run your own server on a DigitalOcean Droplet. This gives you control over the server and its workload, but you must choose and operate the software, account for compute and outbound transfer, and provide any required storage. The bill depends on your setup; DigitalOcean’s Droplet starting price is not a complete streaming cost.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it plays your uploads at the quality you made them, up to 4K 60fps, for one price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
