You can run OBS on a Google Compute Engine (GCE) VM and send a repeating video to YouTube Live, but the VM needs a usable display context and enough network capacity for the stream. For a simple prerecorded loop, Google Cloud’s virtual-display option is a route to evaluate before paying for a GPU; Google’s documentation does not establish an OBS-specific minimum configuration or guarantee that a particular OBS build will work without extra setup. This guide separates the Google Cloud and YouTube steps that are documented from OBS details you must verify for your chosen Linux image.

Choose a virtual display or a GPU-backed VM

OBS is a graphical application, so plan for a display context even if you will administer the VM remotely. Google Cloud says to configure virtual display devices when an application needs a display but does not need GPU performance; its examples include screen-capture use cases. That makes a virtual display a reasonable first option to evaluate for a straightforward prerecorded loop, not proof that every OBS scene or Linux build will work without configuration. See Google Cloud’s virtual-display instructions.

Consider a GPU-backed VM if your scene has graphics-intensive compositing, filters, or other work that benefits from GPU acceleration. A GPU is not established as a universal requirement for looping prerecorded video. GPU selection also brings machine-family and zone availability, quota, and driver setup into the decision. Google documents GPU workstation options including L4, T4, and P4, but does not say which OBS requires. Review the GPU workstation guide, GPU attachment guidance, and GPU driver instructions before choosing that path.

Route When to evaluate it Trade-offs to check
Virtual display A display-dependent application that does not need GPU performance; potentially suitable for a simple loop. OBS compatibility and configuration still need to be verified for your image and scene.
GPU-backed VM A graphics-intensive scene or workload where GPU acceleration is needed. GPU machine and zone availability, quota, compatible drivers, and additional cost.

Create the Compute Engine VM

  1. Prepare the project. Select or create a Google Cloud project and enable the Compute Engine API. Follow Google Cloud’s Linux VM creation guide for the current console workflow.
  2. Select an Ubuntu image and machine. Size the VM for your actual OBS scene and workload; the available documentation does not give an OBS-specific minimum. Google’s virtual Linux workstation tutorial shows an example with an E2-standard-4, 16 GB of RAM, and a 20 GB balanced boot disk. That is a workstation example, not a tested OBS recommendation or minimum. See the Linux workstation guide.
  3. Choose the display or GPU approach. If testing virtual display, use Google’s virtual-display setup guide. If using a GPU, check supported machine types, zones, quota, and driver instructions before creating the instance.
  4. Choose the disk and access method. Allow space for the operating system, OBS, and the loop video files you intend to keep on the VM. Use a secure remote administration method appropriate to your project; the cited VM guide documents the creation flow.

Install OBS and prepare a repeating video

The Google Cloud documentation cited here does not provide current OBS installation commands for a selected Ubuntu image or establish the exact OBS controls for looping a media source. Use the OBS project’s current installation guidance for the specific image and verify the loop control in the OBS version you install rather than relying on commands or menu labels that may have changed. No OBS installation or continuous-stream test is claimed here.

Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.

In OBS, the intended result is a scene containing the prerecorded media, configured to repeat, with any needed audio and overlays. Before relying on unattended playback, verify that the selected source actually loops, that audio behaves as intended at the end-to-start transition, and that the scene renders correctly through your VM’s display setup. Test the full sequence on the chosen VM before treating it as production-ready.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Activate live streaming if needed. First-time YouTube live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  2. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Follow the current controls in YouTube’s live-stream settings guide.
  3. Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, configure the stream service using YouTube’s server URL and the stream key from the Live Control Room. OBS labels may vary by version; use the matching settings in the installed build.
  4. Protect the key. YouTube describes the stream key as password-like. Do not publish it or put it in a public script, repository, or screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the encoder.

Set encoder settings and run a test

YouTube recommends RTMPS for a secure connection and CBR (constant bitrate). Its current guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VM, route, or OBS scene will sustain them. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when choosing resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.

  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • H.264 at 1080p30: 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube.
  • Throughput: select a bitrate that the VM’s available outbound connection can sustain, with headroom for variation.

Before making the loop public or depending on it for a scheduled event, test the encoder with representative audio and motion and watch YouTube’s stream health feedback. A static video may have less motion than camera footage, but the material cited here does not establish a special lower bitrate for static loops. Use YouTube’s published guidance and judge the resulting stream quality and stability in a real test.

Account for VM, disk, and data-transfer costs

A 24/7 stream incurs more than the VM’s compute charge: include the boot disk and outbound data transfer for the stream. Google notes that pricing varies by region and connection method. The exact ongoing cost depends on the selected machine, disk, region, transfer path, and runtime, so calculate those inputs for your configuration rather than treating a workstation example as a monthly price. GPU-backed choices add their own resource cost. Google’s Linux workstation guide and GPU workstation guide explain the respective setup contexts.

Plan for continuity and YouTube policies

A running VM is not by itself a proven 24/7 reliability design. The cited Google Cloud and YouTube material does not establish automatic OBS restart behavior, unattended recovery, or a continuous-uptime guarantee for this setup. Decide how you will detect a stopped OBS process, lost VM, or dropped YouTube connection, and separately configure and test any monitoring or restart mechanism you choose. Do not assume a stream will recover merely because the VM remains provisioned.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive behavior, not a promise that an encoder or VM will remain connected. For an ongoing loop, check the current YouTube Live requirements and the rights to every video, audio track, and other element you broadcast. A live stream’s availability and a channel’s monetization eligibility are not the same question. Review the copyright safety checklist before using material you did not create or license.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

  • OBS has no usable display or fails to render: confirm the VM has a configured display context. Evaluate Google Cloud virtual display for a workload that does not need GPU performance; for graphics-intensive scenes, check GPU support, zone, quota, and driver setup.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: verify that the server URL and stream key belong to the selected Live Control Room stream, that the key has not been reset, and that the encoder is configured to use the intended connection. If the key may have leaked, reset it and replace it in OBS.
  • Stream health reports unstable throughput: test the VM’s available connection and reduce the chosen output demands if it cannot sustain the selected settings. Compare against YouTube’s published bitrate guidance rather than assuming the VM’s machine size alone determines stream quality.
  • The video does not repeat as intended: verify the media source’s loop behavior in your installed OBS version and test a complete end-to-start transition, including audio.
  • The stream stops and does not resume: treat this as a continuity-design issue. The cited setup guidance does not establish automatic OBS recovery; add and test monitoring or restart handling rather than assuming YouTube archiving or VM availability will restore the stream.
  • The bill is higher than expected: review VM runtime, disk selection, region, and outbound transfer, including whether the instance or GPU remains allocated when you are not using it.
