A survey of 1,107 U.S. YouTube TV subscribers found intense frustration during the 2025 Disney channel blackout, including conditional plans to cancel. It did not show that 82% of all YouTube TV customers actually left. Disney and YouTube TV reached a multi-year agreement on November 14, 2025, restoring the channels and ending the immediate crisis.
What the survey actually found
Drive Research surveyed 1,107 U.S. consumers with YouTube TV subscriptions. The results described intentions and opinions, not verified account cancellations.
| Reported result | What it means |
|---|---|
| 82% | Respondents said they were likely to cancel if the blackout continued—not that they had canceled. |
| 24% | Respondents said they had already canceled or planned to cancel. |
| About 30% | Respondents said they were considering alternatives such as ESPN’s direct service or Hulu + Live TV. |
TheWrap’s account of the survey and Yahoo News’ summary support those figures. Neither establishes that 82% of YouTube TV’s entire subscriber base churned.
Why the blackout provoked such a strong reaction
Disney-owned channels disappeared after the distribution agreement expired on October 30, 2025. The missing lineup included ABC, ESPN, Disney Channel, FX, Freeform and National Geographic, affecting sports, news and entertainment.

The Associated Press reported on the blackout’s impact, while a separate AP account described the wider dispute and negotiations.
Why Disney and YouTube TV fought
YouTube TV’s argument
YouTube TV said Disney was seeking terms that could raise customer costs and argued that Disney’s own streaming products could benefit when its channels disappeared from a third-party bundle. The service also questioned the survey’s significance, saying it was unfamiliar with Drive Research and that the reported level of churn did not match what it was seeing. Those are YouTube TV’s claims, not independently verified findings. Android Central quoted the company’s position.

Disney’s argument
Disney said YouTube TV was undervaluing its programming and resisting fair distribution terms. At issue were carriage fees, the cost of sports rights and the relationship between Disney’s linear networks and its direct-to-consumer services. The AP’s reporting and Disney’s agreement announcement describe those competing positions.
The November 14 agreement changed the story
On November 14, 2025, the companies reached a multi-year distribution agreement. Disney said YouTube TV restored its full linear portfolio, including ESPN networks, ABC, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX Networks and National Geographic channels. The agreement also provided YouTube TV subscribers with selected live and on-demand ESPN Unlimited content inside YouTube TV at no additional cost under the agreement’s terms. Disney’s announcement, YouTube TV’s community update and ESPN’s report document the settlement.

This did not make YouTube TV an all-inclusive replacement for Disney+, Hulu or every ESPN offering. Linear channels, selected ESPN Unlimited access and separate Disney streaming products remain distinct benefits and services.
What happened to the $20 credit?
YouTube TV offered affected subscribers a one-time $20 credit if Disney content remained unavailable. After the deal, its community notice reminded eligible customers to redeem the credit by December 9, 2025. A credit compensates for an interruption; it does not restore a missed game or solve the problem for someone who subscribed primarily for ESPN or ABC. Details were published in the YouTube TV Community announcement.

Did YouTube TV actually lose 82% of its customers?
No verified evidence in the reported coverage supports that conclusion. The 82% figure is a conditional survey response: people said they were likely to cancel if the blackout continued. The 24% figure combines people who said they had already canceled with people who said they planned to cancel. Neither number is a company churn report, and no independently verified total subscriber loss was supplied.
The settlement arrived before the worst-case scenario could be tested. The survey nevertheless showed how quickly a blackout can turn dissatisfaction into stated exit plans when a bundle removes the exact sports and broadcast networks that motivated the subscription.

Should you stay or switch now?
The blackout is over, so the decision should be based on your current viewing needs rather than an outdated assumption that ESPN or ABC is still missing.
Staying is more defensible when you:
- Need the restored ESPN and ABC networks in one live-TV service.
- Use YouTube TV’s interface, DVR, household sharing or multiview features.
- Prefer one bundle instead of several direct-to-consumer subscriptions.
- Value the agreement’s ESPN integration and accept that future carriage disputes remain possible.
Switching or pausing is more defensible when you:
- Primarily watch content available through Hulu + Live TV or a focused sports service.
- Watch only a seasonal sport and can subscribe temporarily.
- Can receive local ABC with an antenna and do not need ESPN or other cable networks.
- Object more to bundle pricing or blackout risk than to having the broadest channel lineup.
How to compare replacements without another surprise
- List must-haves: Write down the specific channels, leagues, teams and events your household actually watches.
- Check your ZIP code: Verify local ABC and other broadcast affiliates before switching; availability varies by market.
- Use standard pricing: Separate recurring rates from introductory promotions. During the dispute, YouTube TV’s reported base price was $82.99 per month, while a temporary six-month discount was reported at $72.99; those were period-specific figures, not a current quote. AP and Yahoo/TheStreet reported them.
- Add the real extras: Include taxes, sports or premium add-ons, regional fees and simultaneous-stream limits.
- Check the recording rules: Compare DVR capacity, retention, profiles and household access before canceling.
- Confirm cancellation terms: Note refund policies and whether a pause is available if your need is seasonal.
- Test an antenna first: An antenna may cover local ABC and other broadcast networks, but reception depends on location. Check local signal information and the manufacturer’s return policy before buying.
Alternatives readers commonly consider
| Option | Best use | Important limitation to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Hulu + Live TV | A Disney-connected live-TV alternative cited in coverage of the survey. | Local channels, required sports networks, tier structure and post-promotion price. |
| ESPN direct service | Targeted sports access for viewers who do not need a full live-TV bundle. | It is not automatically a replacement for ABC, local channels, Disney Channel or FX, and event coverage must be checked. |
| DIRECTV STREAM | A broad live-TV replacement for shoppers comparing channel packages. | Total cost, regional-sports and premium-channel complexity. |
| Fubo | Sports-oriented live-TV shopping. | Disney-owned channels and local affiliates may vary by market; add-ons can change the total. |
| OTA antenna | Reducing bundle costs for local broadcast networks. | Reception, hardware, DVR and the lack of ESPN and other cable channels. |
The larger lesson for live-TV subscribers
A live-TV bundle trades convenience for dependence on many separate carriage agreements. Sports rights keep prices high even when a household watches few channels, while direct subscriptions can lower the cost of one interest but create more apps, logins and billing dates. The Disney–YouTube TV settlement restored the lineup, not certainty about future prices or negotiations.
The most accurate reading of the original report is therefore narrower than its headline: many surveyed subscribers were prepared to leave if the blackout persisted, but the survey did not prove a nationwide exodus. The dispute ended before that threat could become a measured result.
