A site, app, extension, or social account still using those names is not automatically affiliated with the former service. For legitimate offline viewing, use an authorized platform’s built-in download feature—for example, Crunchyroll on supported mobile devices and Nintendo Switch. Those downloads are temporary, app-controlled licenses, not freely transferable video files.
Is 9Anime still operating?
The former 9anime brand announced a rebrand to AniWave in 2023, citing legal pressure, as reported by TorrentFreak. AniWave was subsequently reported offline after a 2024 shutdown; see the AniWave history and status overview. Industry reporting also lists 9anime/AniWave among piracy-oriented services in an IIPA filing.

That history means a functioning page that copies the old name, logo, player, or catalog does not prove it is official. Clone domains are unstable and difficult to authenticate, and some may use deceptive advertising, phishing, malicious installers, or fake download controls. This article does not list mirror domains or provide instructions for extracting episodes from them.
Can you legally download anime from 9Anime?
Legality depends on what service has authorized and what your country’s law permits. An authorized offline feature saves protected content inside the provider’s app or supported device. Downloading a transferable video file from an unauthorized streaming site, capturing a stream, or bypassing digital-rights-management controls can violate copyright law, platform terms, or both. Rules differ by jurisdiction, so this is not legal advice.

Crunchyroll’s Terms of Service prohibit unauthorized copying, recording, stream capture, downloading, archiving, distribution, reproduction, and DRM circumvention. Do not treat screen recorders, browser extensions, “stream rippers,” direct-download tools, or DRM-removal software as legitimate workarounds.
How to download anime legally for offline viewing
Android and iPhone
- Install and open the official Crunchyroll app from your device’s legitimate app store.
- Open the anime series and locate the episode.
- Tap the Download icon beside the episode, or choose Download All where that option is offered.
- To watch later, open My Lists → Downloads inside the app.
Crunchyroll documents offline downloads for Android and iOS, subject to title, plan, device, and regional eligibility. The app also provides Account → Downloads → Download Using Cellular Data if you choose to permit cellular transfers. Nintendo Switch
- Open Crunchyroll on the Switch and select the episode.
- Press X.
- Choose Download Episode.
- Find completed downloads under App Menu → Downloads.

Can you download anime on a Windows or Mac computer?
Crunchyroll’s current help page says offline downloads are supported on mobile devices and Nintendo Switch, not on a PC: official download support. Do not use a browser downloader, screen capture, or third-party utility to manufacture a PC copy. For laptop viewing, stream through the authorized website or use an authorized purchase or physical release instead.

How long do official downloads last?
Offline access is licensed rather than permanent ownership. According to Crunchyroll’s current documentation, an unplayed download typically expires after about seven days; after playback starts, it typically remains available for about 48 hours. Continued access can also require an active eligible subscription, an authorized device, and periodic online verification. Titles, plans, regions, operating systems, and licensing agreements can change, so the app’s current eligibility message controls.
These files stay inside the service’s supported interface. They are not ordinary MP4 files that you can freely copy to a USB drive, send to another person, or archive indefinitely. Crunchyroll’s terms govern the license and its restrictions.

What to do when a download fails
Use the provider’s support sequence rather than searching for an unofficial downloader:
- Update the Crunchyroll app and your device’s operating system.
- Tap Retry on the failed download.
- Lower the setting at Account → Downloads → Download Quality.
- Try downloading one episode at a time.
- Restart the device.
- Switch between a reliable Wi-Fi connection and mobile data.
- Check that the device has enough free storage.
- If it still fails, contact Crunchyroll Support.
Why an anime may be unavailable in your country
Anime rights are territorial. A series can appear in search results yet be unavailable in your country because the relevant license was granted to another distributor, has expired, or was never obtained there. A subscription does not guarantee every title in every market. Crunchyroll explains these limits in its regional-availability guidance.

VPN use to evade regional licensing restrictions is not supported by Crunchyroll and can cause login or playback problems. Safer options are to check another authorized service, look for a licensed digital or physical release, or wait for an authorized release in your market.

- Do not install an APK, “official” desktop app, or browser extension offered through a 9anime/AniWave page.
- Never enter a Crunchyroll, Google, Apple, Discord, email, or other password into an unverified site.
- Do not allow push notifications from a page you do not trust.
- Close pop-ups instead of clicking “download,” “virus detected,” or oversized play overlays.
- Treat a missing or disguised download button as a reason to leave, not a challenge to find a hidden server.
If you installed suspicious software, uninstall it, run a reputable security scan, review browser extensions, and change exposed passwords from a clean device. If you submitted payment details, monitor bank and account activity. These precautions address common risks without assuming that every mirror has the same behavior.

Do not download anime from sites impersonating 9Anime or AniWave. The former service is no longer a dependable official destination, and a copied logo or player proves nothing. Use an authorized service’s built-in offline feature on a supported mobile device or Nintendo Switch, accept its expiration and licensing limits, or choose an authorized digital or physical release when you need more durable access.
