What is documented is a 2014 press report that she was going by the name “Portia” while working in Atlanta. A working alias and a legal name change are different things, and most of the confusion around this question comes from treating them as the same.
What the 2014 report said
The original item is credited in later coverage to Georgia Newsday, which reported in 2014 that Sydney was waiting tables in Atlanta and going by Portia. A journalist, Daphne Barak, is quoted in secondary coverage describing a visit to Sydney at her workplace. Because that detail reaches readers through later articles rather than the original piece, it should be presented as secondhand.
Several later biographies repeat the Portia detail. Those pages appear to trace back to the same 2014 item rather than to a separate investigation, so their agreement does not add independent confirmation. Repetition shows that the claim has circulated; it does not show that it was accurate in a legal sense or that it lasted beyond the period described.
Why a work alias is not a legal name change
A legal name change is a formal act. In most U.S. states it is granted by a court and leaves a record, such as a court order or an updated official document. A name a person uses at work, in a restaurant, or with acquaintances is an alias unless a legal process has attached it to an identity.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Searches for an official name-change order, a court record, or a document confirming a legal change turned up nothing that could be attributed to a primary source. Nor did they turn up a direct statement from Sydney confirming a legal change. Based on that, the accurate description is “reported as an alternate name,” not “legally changed to Portia.”
A common mistake is to infer a current legal name from a birth-name listing or from a work alias. Neither is evidence of a legal name at any given time, and neither should be used to draw conclusions about her present name.

Did she change it back?
The available reporting does not establish whether she later stopped using Portia, and it does not say whether any legal change was ever made. A 2014 report can describe what was happening at that time. It cannot show what she called herself in later years. As of this article, the current status of her name is unverified, and anyone claiming she “changed it back” is relying on an assumption rather than a documented event.
The reason given for the alias
The reported motivation was privacy and a lower profile, against a backdrop of intense public attention on her family. That explanation is attributed to the reporting. It is not confirmed by a quotation or interview in which Sydney describes her reasons herself, so it should be read as the reporter’s account rather than her stated view.

How to check a name-change claim yourself
- Look for the legal source. A genuine legal change should be traceable to a court order or an official record. If a page only says a person “changed her name” without citing either, treat the claim as unconfirmed.
- Find the earliest publication. Trace the claim to the first article that made it. If later pages cite each other rather than a primary source, they add volume, not verification.
- Separate the name types. Distinguish a legal name, a birth name, a stage or work name, and a nickname. Pages often blur these, which is how a work alias becomes a claimed legal change.
- Check the date. A report from a given year describes that year. Statements about current names need a current source.
- Look for the person’s own words. A direct, attributable statement carries more weight than a description of what someone supposedly did or intended.
Reader questions this answers
- “What did Sydney Simpson change her name to?” The reported alternate name was Portia, used while she worked in Atlanta according to a 2014 report. A legal change to that name is not established.
- “Sydney Simpson changed her name” is accurate only in the sense that a press report described her using a different name. The phrase “legally changed” goes beyond the evidence.
The short answer is that the public record supports a reported alias, not a documented legal change, and it does not support a claim that she reversed one.
