Neither of them, nor their representatives, has publicly given a reason. Town & Country reported that no reason was given. Entertainment outlets pointed to wedding planning and a quieter public profile as context, but none of that has been confirmed as the cause of their absence.
What is confirmed
- Both Swift and Kelce did not attend the May 4, 2026 gala, according to coverage published that day and the day after by Teen Vogue (Sara Delgado, May 5, 2026), ELLE (Alyssa Bailey, May 4, 2026) and Town & Country (Emily Burack, May 4, 2026).
- Swift’s most recent Met Gala appearance was in 2016, when she co-chaired the event. Town & Country reported this attendance history.
- Kelce had never attended the Met Gala as of 2026, according to Town & Country.
- Teen Vogue reported that Swift is not on the 2026 host committee.
Why no reason has been established
Coverage from the days around the event did not include a statement from Swift, Kelce or their representatives explaining the absence. The only direct statement on the subject is the absence of one: Town & Country said no reason was given. Every explanation circulating since then is either context drawn from the couple’s public life or a report about a different year. The table separates them by how much weight they can carry.
| Explanation | Where it appears | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Direct statement from Swift, Kelce or a representative | None reported in coverage from May 4–5, 2026 | Not established |
| Wedding planning | Teen Vogue (May 5, 2026), ELLE (May 4, 2026), Harper’s Bazaar (May 4, 2026) | Media context and writers’ inference; not confirmed as the cause |
| Lower public profile or time out of the spotlight | ELLE (May 4, 2026) describes the couple as having spent the spring largely out of the spotlight | Descriptive observation; does not show why they stayed away |
| Schedule conflict | Teen Vogue reported the couple skipped the 2025 event because their schedules did not work out | Explanation for 2025 only; does not carry over to 2026 |
Reading the wedding-planning theory
Wedding planning is the explanation that appears most often, and it is the one most worth handling carefully. Teen Vogue suggested Swift may have been busy with wedding preparations and noted that she was not on the 2026 host committee. ELLE and Harper’s Bazaar also mention wedding planning. Those are the reporters’ inferences, not statements from the couple. Being absent from a host committee and mentioning a wedding in the same piece does not establish that one caused the other, and no article reviewed here documents a direct link.
Why the 2025 explanation does not transfer
Teen Vogue also reported that the couple reportedly skipped the 2025 Met Gala because their schedules did not work out. That is a separate absence with its own reported explanation. Readers often merge the two years, so it is worth keeping them apart: the scheduling report describes 2025, and it cannot be cited as the reason for the 2026 absence.

What would settle the question
Only a direct statement from Swift, Kelce or their representatives would confirm a reason. Until one appears, the accurate answer is that the absence is documented but its cause is not. Claims that name a motive, or quote either person on the subject, should be treated as unsourced unless they link to an original statement.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the 2026 Costume Institute Benefit for Monday, May 4, 2026, celebrating the spring exhibition Costume Art. The announced dress code was “Fashion is Art.” The museum’s February 23, 2026 press release describes the gala’s funding role this way: “The Met Gala takes place annually on the first Monday in May and the proceeds provide The Costume Institute with its primary source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and operations.” Vogue’s event page confirms the May 4 date and describes the event as a benefit for the museum.

The host committee is the group of high-profile names who sponsor and organize the evening alongside the museum. Membership changes from year to year, which is why a name missing from one year’s committee tells readers little on its own about attendance.
