The trunks worn over tights are a costume convention, not underwear. The look borrows from circus strongmen and acrobats, and Superman’s 1938 debut helped turn it into a recognizable superhero silhouette. Its “underwear on the outside” reputation is a modern joke about how odd the outfit looks next to ordinary clothing. Where the trunks came from is partly documented and partly still unverified, and the details below separate the two.
What the trunks-over-tights look actually is
The garment in question is a pair of shorts or trunks worn on the outside of a close-fitting full-body suit, usually tights. Calling it “underwear” is shorthand. Nobody in the costume’s history wore it as a layer under trousers. The point of the design is visual: it reads as a performer’s costume, the kind used by strongmen and acrobats on stage.
The performance-costume roots
A 2021 overview from the comic-book dealer Superworld Comics describes Superman’s costume as drawing on circus strongmen and acrobats, including the trunks over tights. That overview also says later costumed adventurers copied elements of Superman’s wardrobe, which is how the look spread beyond one character. It is a secondary historical summary rather than a statement from the people who designed the costume, so treat it as a well-informed account of the influence, not proof of intent.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History identifies Action Comics No. 1 as Superman’s debut in 1938 and credits Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster with creating the character. The museum’s record establishes the date and the creators. It does not, on the material reviewed, explain why the trunks were added.

What the creators left on record
No direct statement by Siegel or Shuster explaining why the trunks were added was located in the sources reviewed. That gap matters, because most popular explanations are later reconstructions. Any account that says the creators “meant” the trunks to do a specific thing is going beyond the evidence.
Zack Snyder’s explanation
The most quoted modern explanation comes from Zack Snyder, director of Man of Steel. TheWrap reported his remarks on June 4, 2013, while covering a behind-the-scenes featurette:
“The reason why his underwear is on the outside of his pants, it’s a leftover from Victorian-era strongman,” Snyder explains.
That is a director’s account of the costume’s ancestry, given while promoting a film. It fits the strongman-and-acrobat history above, but it is one filmmaker’s interpretation, not a creator’s documented design note from the comics’ early years.

The same TheWrap report carries Snyder’s account of dropping the trunks for his film:
“I probably looked at hundreds of versions with underwear. It fell by the boards because I couldn’t make it consistent with the world we were creating.”
The quote explains a production decision, not the costume’s origin. It shows that the trunks were a deliberate choice that a film could reject for reasons tied to its own world.
DC’s explanation: color and silhouette
DC’s 2023 costume retrospective, written by Alex Jaffe and published May 4, 2023, calls the trunks part of Shuster’s original design. It then offers a different kind of explanation, about how the costume reads on the page rather than where it came from:

“But that pop of red really works to break up Superman’s silhouette, letting readers easily identify his limbs in action as the cape conveys movement.”
This is a design argument about legibility. A solid blue body would merge arms, legs and torso into one shape in a panel. The red trunks create a break at the hips, so the eye can follow the limbs. The argument is about how the costume works in comics, and it does not claim to recover the creators’ motive.
The tear-prevention claim
You may have heard that the trunks were added so tights would not split or show. The sources reviewed for this article do not support that rationale. Keep it out of any explanation, because it attributes a practical purpose that no source documents.

Why the “underwear” label sticks
Readers call the trunks underwear because they look like it: a short garment worn over trousers or tights in a way ordinary clothing does not work. The label is a joke about a costume convention. It describes how the outfit looks, not how it was made or meant to be worn. Using “trunks” or “shorts over tights” in place of “underwear” keeps the description accurate.
The strongest documented points are the 1938 debut, the performance-costume roots described in the 2021 overview, Snyder’s strongman remark, and DC’s account of the red color’s role in the design. Anything beyond those should be treated as speculation until a primary statement turns up.
Superman is the anchor case, but the look spread. The 2021 overview says later costumed adventurers borrowed elements of Superman’s wardrobe, so the convention is now part of the superhero visual vocabulary.
Viewed this way, the trunks are less a mystery than a case of a costume convention that outlived its original stage context and kept its shape because it reads clearly in a panel.
Snyder’s account of a strongman ancestry and DC’s account of visual legibility are not competing explanations. One describes where the look comes from, and the other describes why it still works on the page. Both are later interpretations, and readers should weigh them as such.
