Kate Middleton appeared to wear a ring long reported as a promise ring from Prince William in an August 11, 2024 video congratulating Team Great Britain. The identification is not confirmed: jewellery coverage noted that the band’s visible shape may not match the earlier ring, and some reports suggested it could be a different eternity band.
What Catherine wore in the Team GB video
On August 11, 2024, the Prince and Princess of Wales appeared in a video message congratulating Team Great Britain ahead of the Paris Olympics closing ceremony. Coverage identified the ring on Catherine’s hand as the rose-gold pearl-and-garnet band associated with William’s student years. E! described it as a promise ring from the early years of their relationship; JCK also discussed the pearl-and-garnet interpretation.
The reported design has alternating pearls and garnets. Coverage linked the pearls to William’s June birth month and the garnets to Catherine’s January birth month. Neither the precise design nor that symbolism has been authenticated by the couple. E! and JCK describe the reported interpretation.
Why it is called a promise ring
According to secondary reporting, the ring dates to the period when William and Catherine were students at St Andrews and beginning their relationship. Vanity Fair reported that Catherine was first photographed wearing the ring at her college graduation in June 2005. This is a reported history, not a provenance account confirmed by either of them. Why the ring’s identity remains uncertain
The video does not settle which ring Catherine wore. Vanity Fair relayed an observation by The Court Jeweller that the band visible in the video appeared to have a different profile from the promise ring, whose face was described as rounded. JCK and Tatler coverage also recorded uncertainty, while later Tatler reporting described an eternity-ring alternative. These are visual interpretations, not an official identification.

What the video does—and does not—show
The video’s occasion was the Waleses’ message to Team GB, not a statement about jewellery. Their congratulations concerned the athletes; they did not explain the ring’s identity, history or significance. The ring story rests on media descriptions and visual comparison, rather than a public account from William or Catherine. Tatler’s coverage reports the Team GB context and the speculation around the ring.
