The $7.5 million figure attached to Rob Liefeld’s original cover art for New Mutants No. 98 was an asking price announced by Heritage Auctions on August 5, 2024—not a reported sale price. Heritage said the artwork would become the most valuable piece of original comic art ever sold only if it sold for that amount. The announcement alone does not establish what happened to the art afterward.
What the $7.5 million figure meant
Heritage Auctions announced in a press release dated August 5, 2024 that the owner was asking $7.5 million for the original cover artwork. Heritage described the potential record conditionally: “If it sells,” the cover would become the single most valuable piece of original comic book art ever sold.

That distinction matters. An asking price is what a seller seeks; it does not show that a buyer paid that amount, or that a sale took place at all. The available announcement is evidence of the 2024 offer, not a confirmed transaction or a current listing.
Which object was offered?
The offer concerned Rob Liefeld’s unique original cover art for Marvel’s New Mutants No. 98, a 1991 issue identified by Heritage as Deadpool’s first appearance. It was not an offer for a printed copy of the comic.
#1 Best Overall
| Object | What it is | What the $7.5 million referred to |
|---|---|---|
| Original cover art | The unique artwork Rob Liefeld created for the issue’s cover. | The owner’s asking price announced by Heritage Auctions on August 5, 2024. |
| Printed comic copy | A physical edition of the 1991 New Mutants No. 98 comic. Heritage’s issue index catalogs the issue and copies. | Not the object named in the $7.5 million announcement; copy prices do not establish the original art’s value. |
For a printed copy, condition, grading, edition or variant, and sale date affect comparisons. Those factors cannot turn copy-sale records into a valuation or sale record for the one-of-a-kind cover art.
What was said about the offer
In Gizmodo’s August 5, 2024 report, the anonymous owner said, “The time is right.” Heritage co-chairman Jim Halperin said he had “long admired—and coveted—this work,” which he considered “the most important piece of comic book art from the 1990s.” Halperin’s description is his assessment, not an independently established ranking.

Did the artwork sell?
The cited announcement and reporting do not establish whether the original art later sold, was withdrawn, or remained available. They also do not establish a later sale price. The substantiated point is narrower: Heritage announced a $7.5 million asking price in August 2024 and framed the record as dependent on a sale at that price.
