“HózhóoNaasháa,” the sixth and final episode of Season 1, puts Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Bernadette Manuelito against the Buffalo Society. That is an interpretation of the characters’ final beat, not a stated explanation from the creators. Manuelito is part of the trio facing the Buffalo Society, as AMC’s synopsis confirms; the close, however, centers on the relationship between Leaphorn and Chee.
Is Season 1 based on a specific Tony Hillerman book?
Dark Winds is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn and Chee book series. In an AMC interview published June 13, 2022, series creator Graham Roland said, “If you’ve read the book, you know that we end up in a very similar place at the end of Season 1.” His quoted remark does not name the book, so it does not establish that Season 1 directly adapts a particular novel.
