Some Crunchyroll users have reported that an episode resumes shortly after they pause it, or that playback controls appear as if the screen were being tapped. The clearest iPhone and iPad reports date to March and April 2022, but Crunchyroll has not publicly confirmed a current iOS-wide automatic-unpausing bug or a dedicated fix. Try the checks below to distinguish a player problem from autoplay, touch or accessory input, SharePlay, or a network issue.
First, identify what is happening
“Keeps unpausing” can describe different behaviors. Note whether the video resumes seconds after you pause it, starts playing audio after you leave the app, advances to another episode, or pauses and resumes repeatedly. Controls appearing without a deliberate tap is another clue: it may point to unintended input, but does not establish a cause.

| What you see | What it may indicate | Useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Playback resumes soon after each pause | Player or app state, unintended touch or accessory input, or a shared playback session | Force-close the app; disconnect Bluetooth accessories; test outside SharePlay |
| Controls appear repeatedly without a touch | Possible touch-input or player-interface issue | Clean the screen and temporarily remove the case or screen protector |
| The next episode starts only after the current one ends | Autoplay, rather than an episode resuming from pause | Turn autoplay off and test again |
| It happens with one title or episode only | A title-specific playback issue may be involved | Try another episode and record the affected title |
| It occurs only on Wi-Fi or only on mobile data | A network-specific playback problem may be involved | Switch networks and compare |
| It happens to multiple people watching together | A synchronized playback control may be involved | End SharePlay and test playback alone |
Reports of repeated resuming and controls appearing on iPhones and iPads were posted in March 2022 (user report; another user report). Similar complaints are not established as iOS-exclusive: a later report concerned a Xiaomi device running HyperOS, and other reports have mentioned non-iOS playback (2026 Xiaomi/HyperOS report; other-platform report).

Is this a confirmed Crunchyroll iOS bug?
User reports document the symptom, but the reports do not prove that all users share one cause. Crunchyroll’s iOS playback guidance covers general video problems and recommends troubleshooting steps; it does not name automatic unpausing as a confirmed incident or identify a specific app version as responsible. No dedicated permanent fix is documented there. A later pause-and-resume report from 2026 involved Xiaomi/HyperOS, not iOS, so it does not establish a current iPhone outage.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
That distinction matters: the steps below are standard ways to isolate playback problems, not a guaranteed cure for a confirmed automatic-unpause defect. An app update, reinstall, or network change may not resolve an issue that is in the player itself or elsewhere in the service.
Try these checks in order
- Rule out autoplay. Pause an episode and watch what happens. If playback resumes within seconds, that is different from the next episode starting after the current one ends. Turn autoplay off as a test if the problem occurs only at episode completion. Users have disagreed about whether disabling it helps with repeated unpausing, so treat this as a diagnostic check, not a reliable fix (report; report).
- Force-close and reopen Crunchyroll. Close the app, then launch it again and test the same episode. This is among Crunchyroll’s general playback troubleshooting steps.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad. Then reopen the app and check whether the behavior persists. Crunchyroll includes a device restart in its general troubleshooting guidance at the link above.
- Update iOS or iPadOS and the app. Check Settings → General → Software Update, then check the App Store for a Crunchyroll update. Crunchyroll recommends keeping both the Apple device and app current in its iOS guidance. Check the store for the version available to you rather than relying on an older version number.
- Test for unintended touch or accessory input. Clean and dry the screen. If practical, briefly remove a case or screen protector that may press on the display. Disconnect Bluetooth headphones, controllers, keyboards, or remotes and try pausing again; also check for a stuck headphone control. These are diagnostic possibilities, not confirmed causes of this Crunchyroll symptom. Community users have speculated about phantom taps and controller input, but reports do not verify them (user discussion).
- Leave SharePlay before testing alone. Crunchyroll says playback controls during a SharePlay session affect everyone watching. End the session or leave it, then test locally (Crunchyroll SharePlay guidance).
- Turn off a VPN and close other apps. Crunchyroll says VPNs are unsupported and may create speed, compatibility, or availability problems. Its iOS guidance also recommends closing background apps and browser tabs that may interfere with playback (iOS playback guidance).
- Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data. Switch networks and repeat the same pause test. Crunchyroll recommends trying another network to help determine whether the connection is involved (general playback troubleshooting). A weak or fluctuating connection can destabilize playback, but the absence of a buffering indicator does not rule networking in or out.
- Sign out and back in. Test again after logging back into the affected device. Crunchyroll lists this as a way to refresh the session and investigate account-related playback problems in its general troubleshooting guidance.
- Reinstall Crunchyroll. Delete the app, reinstall it from the App Store, sign in, and test again; these are the steps in Crunchyroll’s iOS troubleshooting instructions. Downloaded episodes may need to be downloaded again after reinstalling.
If it still happens, narrow down where the problem sits
- Try another episode. If only one title or episode triggers the behavior, note its name and audio version rather than assuming the whole app is affected.
- Try another device on the same account. If the same episode behaves normally elsewhere, that points toward an issue specific to the iPhone or iPad app or its device state. If the problem follows the account across devices, include that in your report.
- Try the website. Comparing playback in a browser can help distinguish an iOS-app-specific problem from one that also occurs elsewhere. The website has its own playback controls and keyboard shortcuts; see Crunchyroll’s website guide.
- Separate online from offline playback. If it happens only with a downloaded episode, say that explicitly. A 2026 report described pause/resume behavior during downloads on a non-iOS device, but does not establish a general iOS offline-playback problem (report).
What to send Crunchyroll Support
For continuing iOS playback problems, Crunchyroll asks for the device model, iOS or iPadOS version, app version, region, affected show details, audio version when relevant, and a screenshot of any error message or code. Its support page also asks whether the issue occurs during playback or while launching the app (iOS playback guidance).

For an intermittent pause/resume problem, add observations that make it reproducible:
- How many seconds pass between tapping pause and playback resuming.
- Whether the app is open, in the background, or the screen is locked when it happens.
- Whether Bluetooth accessories or SharePlay were active.
- Whether it occurs on Wi-Fi, cellular data, or both.
- Whether autoplay is enabled and whether the issue occurs before an episode ends.
- Whether the same title works on another device or in the browser.
- Whether the symptom began after an app or iOS/iPadOS update, if you know.
A short screen recording can help show the timing and controls, if you can capture the behavior safely. Include the app and system versions rather than guessing which update caused it.

Workarounds that are not established fixes
Some users have said disabling autoplay, turning off Crunchyroll notifications, changing cellular settings, or closing the episode helped. These reports are anecdotal and inconsistent; they do not establish a dependable fix. For example, notification-related improvement was reported by one user, while other users did not report the same result (discussion). Treat such changes as temporary tests, not proof of the cause.
If playback itself works but you cannot watch because of a membership issue, that is a separate account or billing question. Apple-billed subscriptions are managed through Apple’s account settings or the subscription pathway described by Crunchyroll (membership cancellation guidance).
