For the season-six scene, fight choreographer Don Lee performed as a body double, visual-effects and deepfake work created the face, and a voice actor delivered the lines before an AI filter shaped the sound using archival audio of Pat Morita. The creators said the scene served Daniel LaRusso’s story as he tried to understand a more complicated side of his mentor.
How did Cobra Kai recreate Mr. Miyagi?
Co-creator Josh Heald described a layered production process rather than a single AI-generated performance. According to GamesRadar’s report of Heald’s comments to Variety, the scene combined a physical performer, face work by a VFX company, and a separately created voice.

- Physical performance: Don Lee, the show’s fight choreographer, served as the body double. GamesRadar reported that his build was similar to Pat Morita’s and that Lee admired the actor.
- Face: Heald said the team used VFX and deepfake technology, not archival footage, to create the face.
- Voice: A soundalike actor spoke the lines. An AI filter then used archival Morita audio to bring the voice closer to his.
Heald said the team went through “50 iterations” before bringing in the voice-soundalike actor and applying the audio filter. That is a production anecdote reported by GamesRadar; the account does not define what counted as an iteration or describe the precise technical pipeline.
Why did the creators put Miyagi in Daniel’s story?
The appearance was intended as part of Daniel’s season-six character arc, not simply as a visual callback. As Daniel learned information that complicated his childhood understanding of Miyagi, the creators saw dramatic potential in having him face a version of his mentor he did not fully know.

In an interview with io9/Gizmodo published November 18, 2024, co-creator Jon Hurwitz described the idea as Daniel “fighting against this version of Mr. Miyagi that he doesn’t entirely know, that he’s trying to make sense of.” GamesRadar also quoted Hurwitz saying, “We loved the idea of Daniel needing his final lesson from Miyagi.”
Hurwitz said the series had long sought to honor Miyagi and keep him important to Daniel’s life. Ralph Macchio raised the possibility of sharing screen time with Miyagi again; the new information about the mentor gave the creators a story reason to revisit that relationship in a different way.

Did the creators get permission from Pat Morita’s family?
Heald told io9/Gizmodo that “the rights were all handled appropriately.” He also spoke about the creators’ personal relationship with Morita’s daughter, Aly Morita, whom he described as important to Pat and to Miyagi’s legacy.
The interview did not identify the rights holders, disclose contract or license terms, or detail approvals. Heald’s statement describes the creators’ account; it is not a public explanation of the legal arrangements.

The reporting describes a scene assembled from human performance, visual effects, deepfake work, and audio processing. It does not name the VFX company, software, AI model, audio tool, budget, or approval workflow. Nor does it establish that AI generated every aspect of the performance. The reported 50 iterations should be understood as Heald’s account of this production, not as a general measure of deepfake quality.
