Spoilers for Samuel Bodin’s 2023 film Cobweb. The knocking comes from Sarah, Peter’s older sister, whom their parents imprisoned behind his bedroom wall and kept hidden. Sarah is real in the story. The last scene, however, leaves open whether she has physically reappeared or whether Peter is haunted by what happened.

Who is knocking on the wall in Cobweb?

It is Sarah, Peter’s older sister. She speaks to him from behind the wall, telling him that their parents are cruel. For much of the film, Peter—and the audience—has reason to question whether the voice is real. The film ultimately confirms that Sarah exists: his parents imprisoned her after she was born with a severe deformity and concealed her from Peter. The official Point Grey Pictures synopsis describes the hidden-sister premise.

The sources do not name a medical diagnosis for Sarah, so her condition should not be assigned one. The film’s horror comes from the family’s decision to hide and imprison her, not from any diagnosis.

What happens after Sarah reveals herself?

Peter poisons his parents

Sarah persuades Peter to poison his parents with rat poison. After they die, she reveals that she is not simply trying to save him: she resents that he was allowed a comparatively normal life while she was shut away. An account of the film’s plot in Radio Times’ interview with director Samuel Bodin also says the parents killed a girl who saw Sarah escape one Halloween to protect their secret.

Cobweb - BLURAY, Digital
  • Eight-year-old Peter is plagued by a mysterious, constant tap, tap from inside his bedroom wall -- a tapping that his parents insist is all in his imagination. As Peter's fear intensifies, he believes that his parents (Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr) could be hiding a terrible, dangerous secret and questions their trust. And for a child, what could be more frightening than that?

Miss Devine helps Peter escape

When Peter’s bullies arrive intending to beat him, Sarah kills them during the ensuing violence. Peter’s teacher, Miss Devine, helps him get out. She later adopts him, giving him a way out of his parents’ house—but not a clean break from what happened there.

What does the final scene mean?

After Peter escapes with Miss Devine, Sarah appears to him and says, “You are a killer, too.” The accusation points back to Peter’s role in his parents’ deaths: Sarah may be the one who pushed him toward the poison, but he is left carrying the act and its consequences.

Bodin said he wanted the closing encounter to leave Peter unsettled for life: “But when you put something in your mind it can eat you all your life, and that’s the idea, is that from now on you won’t be okay whatever you do.” The film has established Sarah as real; the uncertainty is whether she is literally present in this final moment. Her appearance may be a continuing threat, or Peter may be haunted by the violence and guilt. The ending does not confirm that Sarah escaped again, nor that Peter hallucinated her.

Is Cobweb about a real story?

This explanation concerns Samuel Bodin’s 2023 American horror film, starring Woody Norman as Peter—not Kim Jee-woon’s separate 2023 South Korean film with the same title. Point Grey Pictures identifies Bodin as director and Chris Thomas Devlin as screenwriter. Apple TV’s US catalog listing identifies it as a 2023 horror/thriller with a runtime of 1 hour 28 minutes; that listing does not establish availability or purchase options in every region.

Is there a Cobweb sequel?

In the September 2023 Radio Times interview, Bodin said he had treated the film as a standalone story, while leaving open the possibility of a future film if a strong idea emerged; he also mentioned a prequel as a possibility. He did not confirm that a sequel is being made.
