Goldberg and Winfrey introduced the musical tribute to Jones. Queen Latifah sang “Ease on Down the Road,” the song associated with the 1978 film The Wiz. The presentation was distinct from the ceremony’s annual In Memoriam montage: it was a dedicated tribute to one artist, rather than the memorial roll for people lost between Oscar ceremonies. The staging expanded beyond the two presenters and soloist. The Associated Press reported that Latifah performed with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and 32 dancers. Why Goldberg, Winfrey and Jones were linked by The Color Purple
Jones’s connection to the two presenters was both personal to the film and visible in the Academy record. The 1985 adaptation brought Goldberg and Winfrey together on screen, with Jones among its original-score contributors and picture producers. The film had three Oscar-nominated entries in the Academy’s record: original score, original song for “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister),” and best picture. These nominations show how Jones’s work on the film crossed musical and production roles; the tribute recognized his broader contribution to cinema as well as music.

What Goldberg and Winfrey said about Jones
Winfrey framed Jones first as a musician and then as an influence on film: “When one hears the name Quincy Jones, one’s first thought is musical genius, and for good reason,” she said. The Academy describes its In Memoriam archive as remembering artists and filmmakers lost between the 2024 and 2025 Oscars. The Jones segment, by contrast, was a live musical presentation led by Goldberg and Winfrey and centered on a single honoree. Treating the two as separate parts of the ceremony clarifies why Jones received a dedicated performance rather than appearing only as one name in the broader memorial sequence.
