“Community” said goodbye to Troy Barnes in “Geothermal Escapism,” Season 5, Episode 5. The departure changed the ensemble’s balance: Troy was not only Abed’s closest friend, but also the partner who made their odd-couple adventures feel like a shared language. That is an interpretation of the show’s dynamic, not a measured verdict about its quality. The episode itself gives the loss a memorable send-off—and “Community” showrunner Dan Harmon later called it heartbreaking.
Which character left “Community” in Season 5?
It was Troy Barnes, played by Donald Glover. His final episode is “Geothermal Escapism,” Season 5, Episode 5. Peacock describes the episode as a going-away party for Troy, while Disney+ identifies Abed’s hot-lava game as part of the farewell premise. Peacock’s episode listing and Disney+’s series listing establish the setup.

Why Troy’s absence changed the ensemble
Troy and Abed were a distinctive pairing
Troy and Abed’s friendship gave the series a reliable source of play: their jokes, games, and imaginative schemes let the show turn ordinary scenes into elaborate bits. Troy was not simply an accessory to Abed’s eccentricity. His willingness to join in—and his different, more emotionally immediate presence—made the partnership feel reciprocal. When Troy leaves, the show loses that particular two-person engine.
The loss is about a balance, not a claim that the show stopped working
“Never the same” is most persuasive as a description of a changed rhythm. The Greendale study group remains, and the series continues; what changes is the combination of personalities available to generate its comedy and warmth. A viewer discussion has described Troy’s presence as important to the show’s feel, but that is one fan’s perspective, not evidence of a broad audience consensus. The Reddit discussion is best read as an example of how some viewers talk about departures, not as a survey.

How “Geothermal Escapism” says goodbye
The farewell is built around Abed’s hot-lava game and an elaborate going-away party, turning Troy’s exit into an event shaped by the friendship at its center. The official episode descriptions establish those premises without serving as full transcripts. The emotional force comes from the contrast: a playful, heightened situation is also a goodbye to a character whose bond with Abed had become one of the show’s defining relationships.
What Dan Harmon said about the episode
“I just watched the episode where Troy leaves, and it’s heartbreaking,” “Community” showrunner Dan Harmon said, according to TV Guide. The remark is Harmon reflecting on the episode after watching it, not dialogue from the episode itself. TV Guide’s report on the show’s return carries the quotation.

Why Donald Glover left “Community”
Contemporaneous coverage reported that Glover appeared in the first five episodes of Season 5 before Troy’s departure. TIME described him as leaving to focus on his rap career and other projects; that is a media summary of the context, not a complete firsthand account of his decision. TVLine, TheWrap, and TIME covered the exit. It is clearest to distinguish the two: Glover left the series, and Troy is the character who leaves Greendale.
