Spoilers for Season 6, Episodes 1–5. Tory leaves Miyagi-Do after her mother dies and Daniel stops the fight that was meant to decide the girls’ captain. At the end of Part 1, she is in Barcelona with John Kreese’s Cobra Kai, facing her former teammates as the Sekai Taikai is about to begin. It is a mid-season cliffhanger—not the series finale—and it leaves Tory’s future loyalties unresolved.
What happens at the end of Part 1?
Miyagi-Do is preparing for the Sekai Taikai after Cobra Kai’s earlier defeat in the Valley. Six students are selected to represent the dojo: Miguel, Devon, Demetri, Eli (Hawk), Samantha, and Robby. Tory and Sam are then set to fight for the girls’ captain position.
Before that match can decide the spot, Tory’s mother dies. Daniel calls off the fight. Tory leaves Miyagi-Do, and the ending jumps to Barcelona: she has joined Kreese’s Cobra Kai. Her former friends now face her across the tournament divide just as the competition is about to start. The episode ends before the tournament’s outcome is known. Netflix Tudum’s recap of the first five episodes lays out the turn and the cliffhanger.
Why does Tory join Kreese’s Cobra Kai?
Grief leaves her vulnerable
Tory’s decision follows the death of her mother, not a sudden change into a simple villain. Co-creator Hayden Schlossberg described the loss as disrupting Tory’s progress and leaving her angry and focused on herself. Actress Peyton List said Tory believes Daniel will protect his own daughter and family rather than her. In that state of grief, she is desperate for a purpose and for the chance to secure the captain’s place. List and co-creator Jon Hurwitz discussed Tory’s choice with TVLine.

The stopped fight feels like a lost opportunity
The canceled match matters because it was supposed to settle who would lead the girls at the tournament. Daniel stops it after Tory’s loss, but Tory can read the intervention as another reason to believe she must fend for herself. The captain spot offered a concrete goal at a moment when her life has been upended; losing the chance to fight for it compounds her insecurity.
Kreese turns the moment into a new conflict
Kreese’s influence gives Tory a route to channel her anger, and her move makes the tournament personal: Sam, Robby, and the others will have to face a former teammate on the opposing side. The interviews support grief, fear of being unsupported, and the canceled fight as parts of her motivation. They do not establish that the decision is permanent or that any one motive explains it all.

What does the Miyagi mystery add to this ending?
Season 6 also unsettles Daniel’s idealized understanding of Mr. Miyagi by uncovering parts of Miyagi’s past. Hurwitz said the writers wanted to humanize Miyagi rather than portray him as someone who could do no wrong, and to give Daniel’s relationship with his late mentor greater maturity. In Part 1, that story runs alongside the student conflict: Daniel is reconsidering a mentor’s legacy while his students’ alliances fracture. The Miyagi mystery is not resolved by Episode 5, so it should not be treated as an answer to Tory’s decision or as a revelation this cliffhanger settles. The creators discussed Miyagi’s past and the season’s drama with TV Insider.

No. This is the ending of the first five episodes, designed to leave the Sekai Taikai and Tory’s changed allegiance hanging. Season 6 has 15 episodes released in three batches of five; Netflix’s current Season 6 page confirms that all three parts are available. The series finale belongs to the final batch, not this Barcelona cliffhanger. Reflecting on the first five episodes, William Zabka said, “The stakes are set at the end of the first five. I think if it was just a movie, it’s a great ending that would beg for a sequel.” Netflix’s Cobra Kai Media Center page lists the finale event date as February 13, 2025.
