To change dialogue or subtitles fastest, start a title and open Audio & Subtitles. To change menus, edit the profile’s Display Language. The tracks you can choose still depend on the title, episode, country, profile, device, and whether you are streaming or watching a download.
Choose the setting you actually want
| What you want | Netflix setting |
|---|---|
| Menus, labels, and descriptions in another language | Display Language |
| Dubbed spoken dialogue | Audio |
| Translated or same-language text for dialogue | Subtitles |
| Dialogue plus speaker and sound information | Closed captions or SDH |
| Narration of visual action, settings, and expressions | Audio Description |
Changing Display Language does not automatically change a movie’s soundtrack or guarantee matching subtitles. Netflix documents these as separate profile and playback controls (display and profile language settings; audio and subtitle controls).
Change Netflix’s menu language
TV or streaming device
- Open Netflix and go to the profile-selection screen.

- Tap the profile name at the top, then Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile and tap Display Language.
- Choose the language. It saves automatically.

Switch audio or subtitles while watching
- Start the movie or episode.
- Open the playback controls. Tap or click the screen on a phone, tablet, or computer; press the up or down button on many TV remotes; or swipe up or press the up arrow on an Apple TV remote.
- Select Audio & Subtitles.
- Choose an available audio track, subtitle language, caption option, or Audio Description track.
Some televisions show the choices along the bottom of the screen or put additional languages under Other. A Windows computer uses the Audio and Subtitles control during playback (Netflix playback instructions; Windows playback guidance).
Set preferred audio and subtitle languages for a profile
Browser
- Open the Netflix Account page and select Profiles.
- Choose the profile, then Languages.
- Select preferred Audio and subtitle languages, then Save.
Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Tap My Netflix, then the profile name.
- Tap Manage Profiles and select the profile.
- Tap Audio & Subtitles and select the preferred languages.
TV or streaming device
Netflix’s current TV instructions direct you to play a title, pause it, open the player controls, select Other when shown, and choose the available audio and subtitle languages. Exact labels vary by device.
Profile preferences can influence default playback, recommendations, and—in certain country/profile combinations— which titles Netflix displays. Netflix documents language-based catalog filtering in the United States for English profiles and in Puerto Rico for Spanish profiles. Choosing a different profile language can reveal the full regional catalog, but it does not change your country or bypass licensing (Netflix catalog-display guidance).
Understand subtitles, captions, SDH, and Audio Description
Subtitles
Subtitles usually translate or transcribe dialogue. A title may offer translated subtitles without offering dubbed audio.

Closed captions and SDH
Closed captions can identify speakers and describe important sounds. SDH (subtitles for deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers) generally adds dialogue, music, and sound effects, but may not be available for every language, season, or episode. If SDH is unavailable, ordinary subtitles may omit contextual sounds (subtitle and caption information).
Audio Description
Audio Description is a separate accessibility soundtrack that narrates visual information such as actions, facial expressions, costumes, settings, and scene changes; it is not a translation of the dialogue. Start playback, open Audio & Subtitles, and choose an audio track whose name includes Audio Description. Netflix says it is available for most Netflix Originals and many other titles, but not necessarily every season or episode (Audio Description instructions).
Why a language is missing
Netflix does not offer one universal language list. Availability can differ because of:
- Your country or viewing location and regional licensing.
- The specific movie, series, season, or episode.
- Different source materials or agreements for older seasons.
- A weekly or rolling release whose localization is not complete.
- Your profile’s language preferences.
- The device, operating system, Netflix app version, or subtitle-rendering support.
Therefore, a language working on one episode, device, or country does not prove that Netflix supplies it everywhere. Check the title during playback rather than relying on a global claim (Netflix’s language-availability explanation).

Browse Netflix by audio or subtitle language
Use Netflix’s language-specific browsing pages to find titles that list tracks in your preferred language:
You can also search Netflix for language categories such as English-dubbed movies and TV shows. These pages filter titles in your region; they do not add tracks or unlock another country’s catalog.
Downloads show fewer language choices
For downloaded titles, Netflix may display only the two most relevant languages, even when streaming offers more. If a language appears online but not in the download:
- Connect to Wi-Fi or another internet connection.
- Delete the downloaded movie or episode.
- Set the desired audio or subtitle language in the profile preferences if needed.
- Download the title again.
- Reopen Audio & Subtitles.
The same delete-and-redownload approach may be required when adding Audio Description to an existing download (download language limits; missing Audio Description in downloads; Audio Description for mobile downloads).

Kids profiles and resetting preferences
Netflix says audio and subtitle preferences are not saved in some situations when most Kids titles are watched from an adult profile. Preferences are saved when viewing from a Kids profile. If an audio choice keeps resetting, Netflix recommends playing a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes, then checking the preference again (Netflix language-preference guidance).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change subtitle appearance
Where supported, Netflix lets you adjust subtitle or caption font, size, shadow, background color, and style. Device and country restrictions mean not every option appears everywhere.
Browser
- Open the Netflix Account page.
- Select Profiles, choose the profile, and select Subtitle appearance.
- Adjust the settings and select Save.
- Reopen Netflix on the viewing device.
Android
Use the profile-management settings in the Netflix app. Netflix says these appearance changes apply to titles played on the Android mobile device.
TV or streaming device
While a title is playing, open the player controls and choose Settings if that option is available. If it is absent, the device may not support Netflix subtitle styling. Device-level accessibility settings may also supplement or override Netflix’s controls (subtitle-appearance instructions).

When an older device cannot display the language
Netflix says some devices manufactured before 2014 may not support subtitles in languages including Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian, and Vietnamese. Netflix calls 2014 a general guide, not a guarantee; some newer devices may still lack support.
- Update the Netflix app.
- Update the device firmware or operating system.
- Test the same title in a current browser, phone, tablet, or newer streaming device.
- Contact Netflix if the track should be available but still does not appear.
A newer device can fix subtitle rendering without changing the title’s underlying language availability (device-language troubleshooting).
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm you are editing the intended profile.
- Decide whether you need Display Language, audio, subtitles, captions, SDH, or Audio Description.
- Open Audio & Subtitles during playback and check the specific title.
- Check another episode and season; language tracks can differ.
- Update Netflix and the device software.
- Try a different supported device.
- For offline viewing, delete and redownload the title.
- Sign out and sign back in if a saved setting has not propagated.
- Contact Netflix when the language is listed for the title but remains unavailable.
Changing Netflix’s language does not unlock another country’s catalog. Netflix’s official signup and account pages are netflix.com/signup and netflix.com/account; pricing and availability vary by country, taxes, plan, promotions, and billing channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two languages at once on Netflix?
You can select one available audio track and one subtitle or caption track at a time. The choices are limited to the combinations offered for that title, episode, region, device, and viewing mode.
Why are subtitles available but dubbed audio is not?
Subtitles and dubbing are separate localization tracks. A rights holder may supply one without the other, or the audio track may be unavailable for that title, season, region, or device.
Does changing Netflix’s language unlock another country’s catalog?
No. Profile language can affect catalog filtering in certain countries, but it does not change your region or override territorial licensing.
Why does a language work on my phone but not my TV?
The TV or its Netflix app may have older language-support limitations. Update both, then test the title on another current device.
