The original series was renewed for season 24 as part of CBS’s 2026–27 broadcast schedule. The viral “CBS finally cancels NCIS after 34 years” headline combines an incorrect anniversary claim with a cancellation that has not happened.
As of August 12, 2026, season 23 has ended, season 24 is planned for fall 2026, and the flagship drama remains part of the active NCIS franchise.
What CBS actually announced
On January 22, 2026, CBS announced renewals for 10 additional series for the 2026–27 broadcast season. The list included the original NCIS, along with NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney.
That announcement is direct evidence that CBS did not cancel the flagship series in 2026. Paramount Global Content also identifies NCIS as an ongoing CBS drama, lists seasons 1 through 23, and says that the show has been renewed for season 24.

The official NCIS program information says season 24 is coming in fall 2026 on CBS and Paramount+, continuing in the Tuesday 8:00–9:00 p.m. ET/PT time slot. CBS’s July 27, 2026 announcement of its fall premiere schedule provides further evidence that the network was actively planning its next season rather than ending the series.
Season 23 ended—but it was not the series finale
The 23rd season concluded with “Sons and Daughters,” which CBS lists as airing on May 12, 2026. CBS describes that episode as the season 23 finale, not the series finale.
That distinction matters. A season finale closes one broadcast season; a series finale is intended to conclude the entire program. Since CBS renewed NCIS for season 24, “Sons and Daughters” should not be described as the show’s final episode.
NCIS has not been on television for 34 years
The original NCIS premiered on September 23, 2003, according to Paramount Press Express’s official program information. On August 12, 2026, that makes the series approximately 22 years and 11 months old—not 34 years old.

The 34-year anniversary of the television series would fall on September 23, 2037, assuming the anniversary is counted from the original premiere date. The 34-year figure therefore cannot accurately describe the run of the CBS drama in 2026.
There may be confusion with the broader history of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service or with the age of related television properties. However, the television series itself began in 2003, not 1992.
Why people may be confusing the franchise
The NCIS brand has had real cancellations and changes, but those developments do not amount to the cancellation of the original series.
NCIS: Hawaiʻi ended separately
NCIS: Hawaiʻi was canceled after its third season in 2024. That was a cancellation of one spinoff, not of the original NCIS. Headlines about the end of NCIS: Hawaiʻi can easily be shortened or reposted in a way that makes it appear that the entire franchise—or the flagship series—has ended.

The franchise now includes several programs
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service’s official news site described four current CBS television shows in the franchise in March 2026: NCIS, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva. With several similarly titled programs airing across broadcast television and streaming, a report about one entry can be mistaken for news about the original.
The safest distinction is simple: an individual spinoff can be canceled while the flagship NCIS series continues.
What to expect from season 24
Season 24 is expected in fall 2026 on CBS and Paramount+. The official program information retains the Tuesday 8:00–9:00 p.m. ET/PT slot. No specific episode count or exact premiere date should be treated as confirmed unless CBS announces it separately.
One announced season-24 detail is the return of Michael Weatherly as Tony DiNozzo in a season-long arc for the 2026–27 season. His return is a programming detail for the new season—not evidence that the show is ending.

Where can viewers watch NCIS?
CBS and Paramount+ are the primary current distribution outlets identified in the official program information. U.S. availability listings also identify additional streaming, digital-purchase, DVD, and Blu-ray options, but those rights can change by region and over time.
If you are checking availability, verify the catalog in your country on the date you plan to watch. A service carrying NCIS today may have different seasons, pricing, or rights later. The same caution applies to physical-media listings: confirm the season, region, seller, and stock before buying.
For viewers who want to watch NCIS on Paramount+, the service is identified by CBS and Paramount as a current outlet for the program, but catalog availability and subscription terms vary by market and can change.
