Yes—but the key alone does not provide failover. Configure the primary VPS to send the stream to YouTube’s primary ingestion address and the second VPS to send a matching, simultaneous backup feed to YouTube’s designated backup address. For HLS, YouTube explicitly uses the same stream key in both URL templates, with a different host and copy value. For RTMP or RTMPS, use the primary and backup addresses supplied for that stream; do not send both VPS servers to an assumed common endpoint. Then test the handover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network.
What the stream key does—and does not do
A YouTube stream key identifies the incoming feed and lets YouTube accept it from an encoder. YouTube allows a custom key to be reused in stream settings, but reusing a key does not, by itself, create redundancy or tell YouTube which server should take over. The important configuration is the pair of ingestion destinations: primary and backup. YouTube Help: set up your encoder for live streaming.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a primary ingestionAddress and a backupIngestionAddress. It says the content sent to the primary may also be sent simultaneously to the backup. The intended arrangement is therefore two matching feeds for one stream identity—not a second server that waits until failure and then tries an arbitrary URL. YouTube LiveStreams resource.
Configure the two VPS servers
1. Get the addresses for the actual stream
In YouTube’s live-stream setup or the encoder/API configuration, obtain the primary and backup ingestion addresses for the stream and its protocol. Use the actual values provided there. Do not guess a backup hostname or assume that two encoders pointed at the primary URL constitute supported failover.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Set up VPS A as the primary
- Configure the encoder on VPS A with the stream’s key or stream name and YouTube’s primary ingestion address.
- Set the intended video and audio output. Record the resolution, frame rate, codecs, profile, and keyframe interval so the backup can match.
3. Set up VPS B as the backup feed
- Configure the second encoder with the same stream identity and matching content and output settings.
- Use YouTube’s designated backup ingestion address and the encoder’s supported simultaneous primary-and-backup output configuration.
- Run the backup feed at the same time as the primary. A backup destination is for the redundant copy, not merely a URL to try manually after the primary has stopped.
HLS: use the documented URL distinction
For HLS, YouTube’s instructions make the shared-key setup explicit: the primary URL template uses the a.upload.youtube.com host and copy=0; the backup uses b.upload.youtube.com and copy=1. Both use the same stream key. Preserve the different copy values; YouTube warns that using the same value for both can corrupt the stream. Follow YouTube’s current HLS URL templates rather than reconstructing or altering them. YouTube HLS ingestion guide.
RTMP and RTMPS: use the supplied primary and backup fields
YouTube’s API provides distinct primary and backup ingestion-address fields for RTMP and RTMPS as well. Configure the encoder to use those actual addresses. The HLS host and copy details above are not a substitute for the RTMP/RTMPS addresses. If your encoder cannot send a simultaneous backup output, it may not be able to implement this arrangement as configured; check its documentation for dual-output support.

Keep both feeds compatible
The backup should carry the same programme and use matching encoder settings. YouTube identifies differences in frame rate, keyframe frequency, codec, interlacing, and profile among stream-health issues. Check these settings on both VPS instances rather than assuming that two machines with the same stream key will produce interchangeable feeds. YouTube’s LiveStreams resource documentation describes ingestion settings and stream health.
The two VPS servers and their network paths can be considered as separate failure domains, but YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not prescribe a geographic distance between them or guarantee that using different providers or regions will improve failover. Treat infrastructure independence as an operational design choice, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee.

Test failover before relying on it
- Set up and start both feeds well before the scheduled event.
- Check YouTube’s preview and confirm that the live player is receiving the expected picture and sound. Verify stream accessibility and any local recording or archive you need.
- With both feeds running, stop the encoder on VPS A or disconnect VPS A’s network, following YouTube’s recommended rollover test.
- Watch the player and confirm that it rolls over to the backup feed. Note what happens in your specific encoder, network, and stream configuration.
- Restore the primary and repeat the test in an appropriate test window. Monitor picture and audio during the event, and stop the encoders after YouTube ends it.
YouTube provides this test procedure but does not give a universal failover delay or guarantee seamless behavior for every VPS, network, and encoder combination. A configured backup is not proven until a controlled failure test shows the player rolling over.
Do not confuse a backup feed with a second broadcast
YouTube’s API distinguishes a broadcast—the viewer-facing event or video—from a stream, which represents the incoming audio/video feed and its settings. A broadcast is bound to one stream, and one stream may be bound to multiple broadcasts. That relationship does not mean two encoder processes automatically provide redundancy; the encoders still need the proper primary and backup ingestion destinations and a successful rollover test. Common problems and fixes
- Both servers send to the primary address: This does not establish the documented primary/backup arrangement. Get the stream’s backup address and configure VPS B to use it.
- The backup starts only after the primary fails: YouTube describes sending a simultaneous copy to the backup. Configure concurrent output if the encoder supports it, then test the rollover.
- The HLS backup uses the primary URL pattern unchanged: Use YouTube’s backup template, including its distinct host and
copy=1, while retaining the same key. - The feeds have different video or audio settings: Compare frame rate, keyframe frequency, codecs, interlacing, and profile; align the encoders and check YouTube’s stream-health information.
- The viewer does not roll over during the test: Confirm both destinations and the stream identity, verify that VPS B is actually sending its backup feed, and check encoder/network behavior. Repeat the test after correcting the configuration; do not assume a delay or outcome YouTube has not specified.
- The encoder offers only one output: Check whether it supports simultaneous primary and backup destinations for the protocol in use. A second VPS alone cannot compensate for an encoder configuration that never sends a backup feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than learning to operate two VPS encoders, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not a live camera feed or a dual-VPS failover configuration.
