In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, start your RTMP/RTMPS encoder and check the stream preview: moving picture and audible sound are practical evidence that YouTube is receiving usable video and audio. They do not show that audio and video arrived as separate RTMP tracks or connections. YouTube’s documented workflow does not provide a separate-track status indicator.
Check what YouTube is receiving
- Open the Live Control Room. Use the scheduled or current stream in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the server URL and stream key in your encoder match the destination details for that stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to enter them: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview. YouTube advises waiting for the Live Control Room preview before going live. The encoder sends the stream to YouTube; the preview lets you check the resulting incoming feed.
- Check picture and sound. Look for movement in the preview and listen for audible audio. If both are present, YouTube is receiving a stream with usable video and audio at the preview stage.
- Review stream health. Check its status and any messages. YouTube says stream status can include specific error messages and instructions: See your live stream’s metrics.
For a planned broadcast, test ahead of time with audio and movement similar to what you intend to stream, then monitor stream health during the event. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its live streaming tips.
What the checks can—and cannot—tell you

YouTube’s encoder settings specify audio and video encoding parameters, and its delivery workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. The cited YouTube documentation does not describe a receiving-side indicator that identifies independently arriving audio and video tracks. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
If the preview is missing picture or sound
A picture-only or sound-only preview means one usable medium is absent from the preview. That symptom does not identify the failing component on its own. Check the encoder’s selected source and output configuration, then repeat a controlled test. YouTube’s setup and testing guidance supports checking the configured stream and testing before going live, but does not provide an exhaustive diagnostic tree for every encoder.

- No preview: Confirm the encoder is running and its server URL and stream key match the stream in Live Control Room. Allow time for the preview to appear.
- Picture but no sound: Check that the intended audio source is selected and included in the encoder output. Listen to the test feed again after changing the source or output settings.
- Sound but no picture: Check the selected video source and encoder output settings, then repeat the test with visible movement.
- Error or poor stream-health status: Read the message shown in Live Control Room and follow its instructions. A healthy status is not proof of separate tracks.
If your actual question is whether the sender packages audio and video separately, inspect the encoder’s stream configuration or logs. The receiving-side preview shows the resulting stream, not the sender’s packaging or a separate-track report from YouTube.
